Rheinmetall Wins Major Order for Medium-Calibre Ammunition – 300,000 Rounds for Gepard Anti-Aircraft Tank

Acting on behalf of Ukraine, the German Ministry of Defence has tasked Rheinmetall with supplying 300,000 rounds of 35mm ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft tank, which is now deployed by the Ukrainian military. The order value is in the low three-digit million euro range.

Rheinmetall will be supplying 150,000 rounds each of Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot – Tracer (APDS-T) and High Explosive Incendiary – Tracer (HEI-T) ammunition. This will enable effective engagement of a multitude of targets. The first APDS-T rounds will be delivered in summer 2023. A shift in production from APDS-T to HEI-T is scheduled to take place in mid-2024.

At its plant in Unterlüß, Rheinmetall is currently creating additional medium-calibre ammunition production capacity, which is due to go into operation in summer 2023. In building this new production line, Rheinmetall is responding to sharply increased global demand.

Breakthrough Order for Racal Acoustics Headset in the US Market

INVISIO has received a first major order for the new RA4000 Magna headset, a breakthrough for the Racal Acoustics brand in the North American market. The order value is SEK 42 million.

The order is in support of a large defense contractor to the US Department of Defense where high noise attenuation is required, and deliveries are planned monthly through September 2023.

This marks the first introduction in over 25 years in the US market of Active Noise Reduction (ANR) tactical headsets, designed for heavy armored vehicles.

The RA4000 Magna™ digital headset is Racal Acoustics most recently developed product. It offers market-leading hearing protection, communication capability and situational awareness. The RA4000 Magna™ has modular, customizable, and upgradeable features and accessories, which makes it possible to meet specific customer requirements, while prolonging the life of the product.

The order is a result of focused and joint efforts of INVISIO’s North American 30-strong sales organization and the experienced Racal Acoustics product team. Since the acquisition of Racal Acoustics in 2021, the brand’s products have been fully integrated with the Group’s sales and marketing. This has provided tremendously increased exposure of the brand in the US market.

Strengthened outlook for the Racal Acoustics product family

The need for modern communication equipment with hearing protection is already great in many countries and demand is now expected to rise more, due to a greater focus on defense matters and generally higher appropriations.

This is reflected not least in a rising level of activity in the market for military vehicles, for example, an area addressed by Racal Acoustics.

Valiant Awarded $67 Million Contract by United States Army for Joint Training Analytical Support Across Europe

HERNDON, Va., Feb. 07, 2023 — Valiant announced today that the U.S. Army’s Theater Contracting Center (TCC) in Kaiserslautern has awarded the company a five-year non-personal services contract with a maximum value of $67 million to provide Joint Training Analytical Support (JTAS) to U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) J7, U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA), and Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR) in their execution of the USEUCOM Joint Training and Exercise Program (JTEP), the Joint and Individual Staff Training (JIST) Program, and the Joint Training System (JTS).

Fresh Sales Successes for Rheinmetall in Artillery Ammunition: Total Order Value in the Double-Digit Million-Euro Range

Rheinmetall has just won two new contracts in the indirect fire ammunition domain. An international customer has ordered propellant charges worth around €40 million from Rheinmetall Denel Munition, the Group’s South African subsidiary. Another customer, a NATO state, has placed an order with Rheinmetall Denel Munition for its tried-and-tested Assegai 155mm ammunition. This order is worth around €17 million. The Assegai family of artillery ammunition can be fired from any NATO STANAG-compatible artillery system, including the PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer.

Back in 2019, Rheinmetall succeeded in setting a new maximum range record in South Africa with the Assegai family and other Group products like the new Extended Range Charge from Rheinmetall’s subsidiary Nitrochemie AG. Thanks to the Assegai system approach – from fuse to projectile to propelling charges – long ranges were attained with various artillery systems. A non-NATO 155mm artillery gun with 52 calibre lengths and a 25-litre propelling charge chamber achieved a record range of 76 kilometres.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition is already working on other future artillery technologies. For example, the rocket motor in conventional 155mm Assegai projectiles is being improved. In addition to this, a new development is on the way that will boost the maximum range to over 155 kilometres.

Saab Receives Order for Support of Ground Based Air Defence from Sweden

Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration for continued support of the Swedish Armed Forces’ Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) systems. The order value is approximately SEK 170 million and the order was booked in Q4 2022.

The contract period is 2023-2025 with options for another three years. The work will take place at Saab’s sites in Halmstad, Växjö and Gothenburg, Sweden, as well at on-site at the customer.

“By providing continued support, we contribute to ensuring the readiness of Swedish ground based air defence systems and that the Armed Forces can continue to keep Sweden’s airspace safe,” says Michael Olofsson, head of Saab’s business unit Tactical Support Solutions.

Saab has provided support for the Swedish Armed Forces’ GBAD systems for more than 60 years. The support currently includes the missile systems RBS 70 and RBS 90 as well as the ground-based radars Giraffe AMB and Giraffe 75. Saab also handles support for the RBS 97 in addition to command and control systems and software.

Multimillion-Euro Contract for Rheinmetall: Finland Orders Spike Guided Missiles

The Finnish armed forces have contracted with EuroSpike GmbH, a joint venture of Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH, Diehl Defence, and Rafael, to supply Spike antitank guided missiles. For Rheinmetall, the order is worth a figure in the mid-double-digit million-euro range.

Of great importance for Rheinmetall, this order also underscores the tremendous trust placed in EuroSpike GmbH: the German-Israeli joint venture is now an industrial mainstay of the antitank capability of many EU and NATO member nations.

The German armed forces were among the first Spike users. A version of the system known as the Mehrrollenfähiges Leichtes Lenkflugkörpersystem (MELLS; multi-role light guided missile system) is in service with the Bundeswehr. Made by EuroSpike – a joint venture in which Rheinmetall holds a 40% stake – the MELLS is a latest-generation effector designed for engaging armoured targets at ranges of up to 4,000 metres or, depending on the model, up to 5,500 metres.

Rheinmetall possesses extensive experience with the MELLS. The company has already integrated this advanced guided missile into various combat vehicles.
