Cohort PLC Company SEA Demonstrates Future Soldier Technology

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016

Cohort plc company SEA has completed a demonstration of new technologies that could revolutionise the way armed forces operate in combat situations.

The new systems have been developed by SEA and its team partners as part of the Delivering Dismounted Effect (DDE) Research project. SEA was prime contractor to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) on the DDE Research project and headed a team from industry and academia delivering integrated dismounted soldier systems research to the UK MoD.

The new systems being considered include technologies for weapons, helmets, torso protection and night vision systems using each element as a separate weapons platform.

In particular, the DDE research investigated the technical feasibility, benefits and costs associated with integrating power and data onto the weapon and helmet. All the systems have been designed to meet the challenges required by an adaptable and flexible force dealing with evolving threats and it is envisaged will be part of the equipment and design of the future soldier.

It is also planned that the technologies designed under the DDE Project will lead to enhanced collaborative engagement across multi-national forces and will help the military and government consider the lethality-related implications of females operating in ground combat roles.

The research was displayed at a special event at the Infantry Trials and Development Unit (IT&DU) in Warminster.

SEA Managing Director Stephen Hill, said: “We are proud to have led this vital research project which will bolster the operational effectiveness of the next generation of soldiers.

“There is tremendous potential to increase the capability of weapons and equipment while at the same time improving data sharing and situational awareness between combat forces and their partners. The DDE project will provide a step change in the way our forces approach future combat situations.”

SEA was able to bring to Soldier System Research comprehensive knowledge of military operational environments and in-depth understanding of key technology domains. This has been developed over the past ten years through work on a range of research projects including Urban Operations Study, Future Dismounted Close Combat (FDCC) and Delivering Dismounted Effect (DDE) projects.

outerlimits-sf16-6

Each year in autumn the international maritime Special Forces-Outfitter outer-limits organizes its EXPERIENCE WEEK for Special Forces taking place at a mountain lake in the Austrian Alps. The reason for this may not only be related to the fact that the members of international maritime special forces from almost all continents need to test the specialized equipment in bad conditions but also that it simply has to be cold and wet for the frogmen to jump into the water. SPARTANAT.COM was with them and had a close look at the gear.

outerlimits-sf16-15

This image depicts the optimum conditions fairly well. Also, you can spot one of the latest products, the Rebreather MK1 – a product of the company SIEL/OMG – which was thoroughly tested. We will soon give a comprehensive introduction into the functionality of the device, which is available as a military, antimagnetic model and a civil version.

outerlimits-sf16-12

Frogmen do not have to rely on their physical condition exclusively: SUEX provides a variety of DPVs and DPDs (Diver Propulsion Vehicles and Diver Propulsion Devices) as well as DTCs (Dry Tube Containers). With these devices it is possible to approach targets located at a distance of up to 25 kilometers.

outerlimits-sf16-14-suex-dry-transport-containers-55-100l

Also, sufficient equipment can be transported: these diving containers hold 50 or 100 liter and are moved by frogmen using DPVs. SUEX is the worldwide leader regarding the development and production of these special military devices. Outer-limits is the Senior Consultant of SUEX and responsible for all international public administrations well as training and education.

outerlimits-sf16-10

Who prefers to stay above water, can rely on this classic product: The folding boat Commado 545 – produced by the company Klepper – allows for quick and silent above water movement and can easily be transported dismantled.

outerlimits-sf16-9

We always knew that frogmen are the beach boys within the military. The new thing is that they can get surf boards now. The surf board of the company Lampuga is inflatable and motorized, it can be used for approaches on the surface and reaches speeds of up to 50 kph.

outerlimits-sf16-4

At the EXPERIENCE WEEK you can also come across many classics, such as the company Poseidon, which in terms of diving equipment has much more to offer than just masks

outerlimits-sf16-16

and of course you can find Draeger, which provide Rebreather, diving masks and practical tests of new amplifiers.

outerlimits-sf16-7

Moreover, the X-Shut system offers stunning technical solutions. The mounting arms of the system can equally be used for the HAHO/HALO parachuting as well as for diving. Or it can even be combined, which is not unusual for triphibians.

outerlimits-sf16-3

Outer-limits also offers its own Tactical Dry Suit collection. Everything can be custom-build: a variety of breathable laminates, camouflage patterns, IR and heat-absorbing materials, sealing seams, which are particularly tear-resistant, MOLLE applicator and so on. All of these suits are manufactured only in Europe and exclusively for outer-limits. This guarantees quick, individual solutions, which are adapted to the specific requirements.

outerlimits-sf16-2

Those who get wet feet, also need special shoes: Together with the company HAIX outer-limits has launched SEA EAGLE. The boots are also availabe in Tan now.

outerlimits-sf16-1

When exciting the water under potential bombardment, ballistic protection is essential: the SAPI plates from outer-limits are one of a kind. Even .338 Lapua AP cannot puncture the plates.

outerlimits-sf16-17

The base camp, where the annual meeting of amphibian Special Forces takes place, shows itself from its best side, even when it’s rainy.

Outer-limits is the international sales partner of all the companies presenting their products at the EXPERIENCE WEEK. The entire equipment presented as well as the compatible training are available at outer-limits.

Nordic Combat Uniform System

Friday, November 4th, 2016

The Nordic Combat Uniform system (NCU) is a cooperation among Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden with the goal of procuring a combat uniform system with accessories.  It is intended as an all service (army, navy, air force, home guard and special forces) combat uniform system for male and female soldiers. It is an inner to outer combat uniform system (from head to toe), which is functional in worldwide operations.

The concept is to come up with a multi-layer combat uniform system which is functional in arctic, tropical and arid environments.  While a common Nordic camouflage pattern has been looked at, it is not a component of NCU at this time.  Consequently, any NCU components will be procured by the various countries in their national patterns.

NCU should provide:
– Improved combat endurance for the Soldier
– Improved protection from environmental and other indirect threats
– Improved modularity and flexibility
– Reduced overall weight and volume over legacy systems

NCU will replace:
– Light and heavy field uniform in Woodland/MultiCam patterns
– Light arod and tropical uniforms
– Shell garments in Woodland/MultiCam and Arid patterns
– Insulation jacket/trousers
– Under Armor (Combat) Shirt in Woodland and Arid patterns
– Winter Camouflage uniform (overwhites)
– Base and Mid layer clothing

NCU will also determine whether hand and footwear should be rolled into the program.

Although the initial concept goes back to 2011, the program is currently underway with selection of candidiate items coming soon along with Developmental and Operational Testing. The program hopes to begin fielding by 2019.

To keep tabs on the program, visit www.nordefco.org/ncu.

HERA Arms CQR AR Stock And Forward Grip

    Monday, October 31st, 2016

Coming to a Deux Ex sequel near you

This unique stock and foregrip combination has been making the rounds across the internet, and to be honest it’s a bit mall ninja-ish, but at the same time it also manages to be really damn cool. Like, I need to make a ‘for fun’ build out of these parts cool. Ghost In The Shell, Shadowrun, cyberpunk cool, if I may be so bold.

The two components are called the CQR Stock and CQR Front Grip, and are the creation of Germany-based HERA Arms, a company which specializes in manufacturing weapons and weapons accessories. Utah-based LAN World is the current importer of HERA Arms components into the USA, and supposedly they’ll be offering the CQR parts in the coming months. I, assuredly like many others, eagerly await their availability.

    commiefornia

They’re also making a Commiefornia compliant version, so if you have to neuter your rifle, at least it can be done in relative style.

CORVUS DEFENSIO: Bringing the Steyr AUG to the 21st Century

    Friday, October 28th, 2016

The Steyr AUG is a great rifle, but it somehow got stuck in the 70s’ when the select fire StG77 (StG is short for Sturmgewehr; German for assault rifle) was introduced with the Austrian Bundesheer (Army). There are licensed copies and clones, but the US-made MSAR did not differ significantly from the original design. The Steyr AUG A2 introduced a top rail and the A3 a bolt stop, but external as well as internal mods to the gun are rare and in between (CQC kit, Ratworx & Suarez parts). Thales did a complete rework of the Australian made F88 and introduced the modified F90 in the process. Mods from Steyr itself? Enjoy the silence…

Therefore a new company got in the game. Based in Vienna, Austria, its mission is to bring 21st century accessories to the end-users of the Steyr AUG. CORVUS DEFENSIO is tackling the deficiencies of the rifle with intelligent solutions designed by practical experience with the AUG in different environments.

    aug-deflector

One of the biggest problems of the AUG is ejecting the case into your face – which is a bullpup problem. The CORVUS DEFENSIO Case Deflector ejects cases forward or to the side and thus makes it ideal to shoot in every combat stance, from either shoulder, without any additional modifications or adaptations. Installation requires no drilling or modification to the stock as the two piece Case Deflector is simply plugged into the ejection port and tightened with two screws, the plastic stock is also protected against damage when an empty case is not completely ejected.

    aug-receiver-rail

But CORVUS DEFENSIO is changing the whole rifle: The CORVUS DEFENSIO 35-Slot Receiver Rail offers a long, solid mounting solution for the attachment of optical aiming devices, iron sights, laser designators and other accessories.  The total length of the rail is the same as the rail length of an AR15 receiver and attached 9” (midlength gas system) railed handguard.  Unlike the AR15 receiver and handguard rails, the Corvus Defensio 35-Slot Receiver Rail is solid (monolithic) from front to rear.  Unlike the original Steyr AUG A3 rail, the Corvus Defensio Receiver Rail reaches almost to the ejection port, making it easier to use short eye-relief optics. It is equipped with two QD-Sling Swivel attachment points and an interface to directly mount ACOG rifle scopes. Integral limited rotation QD Sling swivel attachment points (also suitable for snap hooks, paracord, etc.). With much space for what the shooter needs: Keymod installation option in the front rail for mounting accessories on the sides.

    aug-forward-acessory-rail

Keymod is the choice of CORVUS DEFENSIO also when changing the traditional AUG grip to a rail with much more options. The CORVUS DEFENSIO Forward Accessory Rail revolutionizes the Steyr Aug’s mounting options.  Very simply, it replaces the original folding front grip and enables the mounting of a variety of accessories directly to the Keymod interface (e.g. front grips, bipods, etc.).  Direct mounting reduces weight and bulk, but if you want to use common Picatinny mounts, you can attach the Corvus Defensio 15-Slot or 4-Slot Keymod-Picatinny accessory rail sections to the Corvus Defensio Accessory Rail.

    aug-enhanced-mag-release

The AUG is also getting better with a new mag release: The CORVUS DEFENSIO Enhanced Magazine Release Button makes reloading faster and more reliable. When you go for limit (stress caused by competition or combat, wetness, numb or cold fingers, darkness, etc.) faulty operations with the original magazine release button may happen. Your thumb could slip aside because of the original releases’ outwardly curved form or you even might not be able to push the button far enough inside the housing because your thumb was not right in the center of it an gets caught at the stock. The issue of the original part is that the release of the magazine happens just when the button is already recessed in its port. The design of the CORVUS DEFENSIO replacement part prevents those situations reliably, thus ensuring a faster and more reliable magazine change.

CORVUS DEFENSIO also opts for a new sling mount: The CORVUS DEFENSIO Anti-Rotation Stock Cap Retainer Bolt Kit solves two problems that often occur when using the AUG professionally.  Because the original stock cap retainer bolt can be rotated around its axis, the sling can become twisted after repeated slinging and unslinging of the rifle.  This creates unpleasant pressure points on the shoulder and quick adjustable slings might also lose that function.  While the CORVUS DEFENSIO Anti-Rotation feature completely prevents twisting of the sling, the QD function allows for fast sling detachment, e.g. for disassembly and cleaning of the rifle.

    aug-enhanced-trigger

All that is good already. But one of the biggest concerns shooters have with the Steyr AUG (and Bullpups in general) is the trigger system and how it performs. The original plastic trigger feels a bit like a single stage trigger with a hard pull and a creeping reset. CORVUS DEFENSIO was inspired by the idea of Ratworx and 2020 Precision to implant a standard AR15 trigger into the Steyr AUG. As it was not possible to obtain one of these triggers in Europe CORVUS DEFENSIO started to design their own Enhanced Trigger System. It´s rather tricky to accomplish a proper technical solution with a reliable trigger system that fulfills the expectations. But CORVUS DEFENSIO is on a good way to get a solution using in their opinion one of the best AR trigger systems that can be found. Namely ALG and Geissele Triggers. The fine tuning and the quality checks are still going on and the prototypes are very promising.

To draw the balance: Each item by CORVUS DEFENSIO is improving the Steyr AUG in a specific area, and as a package they revolutionize the rifle’s handling, modularity and capability. Starting October 26th, the first batch of accessories is becoming available, with more under development.
