Remember Today – 2002 Nord-Ost Siege

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

The average man on the street won’t remember today, but I want our readers to. Today marks the date of the culmination of the 2002 Nord-Ost Siege. A splinter group of Chechen separatists attacked and held around 800 members of the audience and theater troupe for two-and-a-half days. Around 90 of the hostages were able to take advantage of the chaos surrounding initial stages of the siege to escape. Another 150 – 200 hostages were released by the terrorists hours after taking the theater. Over the next two days more groups of hostages were released including children.

Just miles from the Kremlin, the attack to retake the theater consisted of decisive action by Russian SOF. While they were successful in defeating the 50 terrorists, unfortunately, part of the course of action was to pump an unknown chemical agent into the theater which contributed to the ultimate hostage death toll of 170. Unfortunately, the fate and whereabouts of 12 terrorists is still unknown.

Interestingly, many of the explosives brandished by the terrorists were in fact training dummies and the detonators for the actual devices contained drained batteries sabotaged in the terrorist logistics network by undercover agents Additionally, hostages retained their cell phones and were able to pass information on the siege to authorities.

US military, Law Enforcement and First Responders should study the Nord-Ost Siege in greater detail to consider the possibility of similar situations and how they can effectively be dealt with. Many already consider the September, 2004 tragedy at Beslan where Chechen terrorists held a school on opening day, killing 334. However, the conflict is much larger in scope and provides further insight into how terrorists may operate in a homeland. These incidents as well as the 1995 deployment of a radiological dispersion device by Chechens in Moscow’s Izmaylovsky Park bear close study.

Please remember the innocent hostages lost in 2002’s Nord-Ost Siege and those Russian troops killed in the raid to retake the theater. They all died in this international war on terrorism.

Blue Force Gear Joins The Spirit of Blue Foundation

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Blue Force Gear has announced that they are joining The Spirit of Blue Foundation as a Safety Grant Sponsor. The Spirit of Blue Foundation raises money to help upgrade the equipment of our nation’s LE community.

“The Spirit of Blue Foundation captured our attention from the moment that we heard about their mission to support the Law Enforcement professionals who protect our communities. We have been looking for ways to help raise awareness about training and equipment needs of the Law Enforcement community and Spirit of Blue seems to be the perfect avenue to accomplish that goal,” said Ashley Burnsed, President of Blue Force Gear, Inc. “As Blue Force Gear has seen great success with its product among the ranks of the military, it is a natural extension for that same gear to find its way to the street with law enforcement.”

“SWAT, Tactical and Emergency Response teams are in ever increasing demand nationwide,” stated Ryan T. Smith, Vice Chairman of the Spirit of Blue Foundation. “For these teams to operate at their peak and stay safe in the process they need the right gear. More and more, patrol officers and deputies also need access to this same equipment as the risks they face grow. We are excited about the unique solutions that Blue Force Gear has created and that agencies will be able to use their Safety Grant funds to purchase this equipment.”

Five non-profit organizations actively supporting the law enforcement community have already teamed up with the Spirit of Blue Foundation for the 2011 holiday campaign that launched in October. Those organizations – The National Troopers Coalition, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, National Sheriff’s Association, Chicago Police Memorial Foundation and the Jeffrey S. Parola Foundation – represent roughly 125,000 officers, deputies and agents nationwide.

As partners they are promoting the sale of the Spirit of Blue’s blue ribbon holiday wreath honoring and benefiting the law enforcement community. Consumers who purchase the product during the Campaign will be allowed to select which non-profit they would like to see benefited from the sale and the Foundation will donate a portion of the proceeds accordingly. At the same time, consumers will be asked to nominate a law enforcement agency that they would like to be considered to receive a Safety Grant award. At the end of the Campaign, the Spirit of Blue Safety Grant Program randomly selects nominated law enforcement agencies to receive a safety grant award. The safety grants will be redeemable exclusively through the consortium of Safety Grant Partners made up of law enforcement equipment brands such as Blue Force Gear.

Preliminary statistics through October 2011 released by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, in conjunction with Concerns of Police Survivors, revealed the number of U.S. law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty rose 21% percent over the same period in 2010. Firearm-related deaths reached 53, an increase of 29% from the same period in 2010. The reality of these statistics and the increasing number of underfunded law enforcement agencies across the country fueled the safety grant initiative.

The Spirit of Blue Foundation, along with Blue Force Gear, is asking consumers to ‘get in the Spirit of Blue’ this holiday season by purchasing the Spirit of Blue Wreath and giving back to the law enforcement community. The wreaths are available for purchase through December 19th and winners of safety grants will be announced in early February 2012. RCMP Adopts C8 Carbine

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have finally adopted the C8 carbine which is a variant of the M4 manufactured by Colt Canada after four Mounties were killed six years ago in Alberta. These aren’t the first carbines issued to Law Enforcement Canada as they are already in use by the RCMP’s Emergency Reaction Teams as well as other tactical units. Rather, this deployment is much more like the adoption of patrol carbines within US LE to react to an increasingly armed criminal element. Unfortunately, the RCMP is only purchasing 375 carbines and will have to determine the basis of issue.

In addition to the new weapons, the RCMP announced earlier this year the purchase of 6,800 improved bulletproof vests with full deployment by April 1, 2013.

This is the standard C8 package.

1 – Reduced length cold hammer forged heavy barrel
2 – Flash suppressor
3 – Bayonet lug
4 – TRI-AD 1TM MIL-STD-1913 accessory mount
5 – Special carbine chamber and gas system
6 – Accepts all STANAG magazines
7 – Integrated sight rail (Weaver or Picatinny)
8 – Optional ambidextrous controls
9 – Single or double sided sling loop
10 – Standard 4 position buttstock with no slip rubber butt pad

Source One Distributors Sponsors Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Source One Distributors Inc., a leader in tactical gear distribution, recently announced support for the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation (MC-LEF). Source One CEO & President Mark Llano and Director of Operations Lori Stanek both attended the foundation’s Sixteenth Annual Gala at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City following a donation of $3000.00 to MC-LEF.

MC-LEF’s mission is to encourage the spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical development of children through education. Founded by former Marines and law enforcement personnel, MC-LEF provides scholarships to children of Marines and federal law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. To date, the MC-LEF has distributed aid with a value of more than $50,000,000.00 to eligible children.

This is great and we are happy to see Source One Distributors support MC-LEF. It’s an organization that bridges both military and LE.

idIRt from Cyalume

Friday, September 30th, 2011

If you’ve spent any time at all in the military, then you are well with Chem Lights and perhaps with other Cyalume products as well, but here’s one that’s so new, you haven’t seen it yet.

We called this kind of stuff pixie dust, but Cyalume’s new idIRt (Intrusion Detection InfraRed Traceable) technology brings discreet tracking to the masses. You just mix it up, sprinkle it in an area likely to attract the target, and let him do his thing. Then, you can use night vision systems to track his movements. Naturally, this is great for LE use, but can also be used for other security applications such as catching pilferers or tracking vermin.

idIRt is undetectable with the naked eye so it will blend right in with other earthen materials. However, it emits in the IR spectrum so you can easily detect it’s presence with the aid of night vision.

MDM – Other Coverage

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Modern Day Marine is one of our favorite shows of the year and by no means were we able to cover it all. Check out this coverage from our friends at KitUp!:

Benchmade’s Newest Battle Blade Is Ready for Abuse

TAG’s New M240 Machine Gun Bag

and while the coverage didn’t originate from MDM, the Medford Knife & Tool Hammerspike was also on display

Shatter Glass Easy with Hammerspike

Additionally, Gannett’s Defensenews.com offered The Show Scout

Finally, don’t forget Tactical Fanboy’s singular, titillating look at ballistic undergarments.

BCB Like You’ve Never Seen Them Before

Even between all of us, we didn’t get it all. It was a great show. Look for additional coverage of gear we saw at MDM 2012 here on SSD.

MDM – Elite Defense

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Elite Defense is repping a new lightweight ballistic shield for uniformed LEOs from Citadel Defense. As you know, this has become a terrible year for officer fatalities, with many being shot in the face and neck.

20110928-094625.jpg

Designed to stop low velocity handgun rounds, it available in four sizes from an 8lbs shield all the way to a large 20 lbs shield. It includes a 1200 lumens light to disorient an unruly subject. Also available is a camera attachment to collect a record of any incidents.

It’s not designed for use with every traffic stop but rather for times when the “spidey sense” kicks in. However, the larger shields have been employed by individual officers during drug raids while checking confined spaces such as attics and crawl spaces when their heads are most vulnerable.

Israeli Carbine Training Video

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Mako Defense has released a new DVD entitled, “ISRAELI SPECIAL FORCES TRAINING: COUNTER TERROR CARBINE.”

This DVD parallels current live training being conducted by Mako Defense and demonstrates the “Israeli Method” of fighting which revolves around the concept of using speed and accuracy to quickly neutralize any threat, while protecting bystanders. The DVD is intended to give LE officers pointers for working alone, with a partner, or in a team, to the sharpen the skills of military combatants, and enable civilian shooters to become more competent in every aspect of using their tactical rifles for home defense as well as shooting sports.

In a press release, Addy Sandler, CEO of Mako Defense relayed, “We are pleased to make this excellent fighting and self-defense method available to more people in the United States.” “Our live-fire courses fill up fast, and we often have law enforcement and military personnel attending on their own time, along with a great many civilians who are passionate about shooting and understand the need to develop expert home defense techniques. While not a substitute for live interaction with our Israeli instructors, our DVD courses will enable everyone to understand how to utilize the Israeli Method of fighting to make themselves and their loved ones safer.”

Available through tactical and firearms retailers. For more info visit www.themakogroup.com.
