Ares Gear Announces Aegis Belts

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

Ares Gear has announced the Aegis Enhanced, the first offering in the Aegis family of belts.

20130917-113758.jpg

With a 4oz stainless steel buckle, and the same proprietary scuba webbing that you’ve all grown to know and love, the Aegis Enhanced is easier to thread (only one tail!), lower-profile both visually and physically, and has only one moving part in the buckle. The buckle is a very beefy version of the roll pin buckle used on military dress belts and unlike anything else out there.

20130917-113826.jpg

Now, here’s the catch; the Aegis belts on their website are a VERY limited run (the last of the machined buckles). Production buckles will be MIM (Metal Injection Molded), so the ones available for purchase now are the same type used by weartesters.

Once these are gone, Ares doesn’t anticipate having more Aegis belts for sale until 2014 (unless they make that MIM mold REALLY fast), so get one early.

DSEi – NFM

Thursday, September 12th, 2013

These vests were built by NFM as a sub to Sagem as part of the SmartVest program currently being undertaken by the BeNeLux. Sagem is also working on the next generation of the French soldier system, FELIN.

20130912-081023.jpg

Underneath these outer vests named LCVA and LCVB, the Soldier wears a fragmentation or soft armor vest. Along with the integrated vest seen to the right, these four vests make up the system which is joined by three packs including a 100 liter 48 hour pack. The packs share an integrated waist belt that can be used with the vests as well as used alone as a cartridge belt.

20130912-081042.jpg

You will note the 6/12 technology as well as the Tubes which is used as a front closure on this vest rather than a zipper. Awhile back, we told you that FirstSpear had entered into a cooperative agreement with NFM to utilize their technology. This makes them the exclusive
Licensee of these technologies.

20130912-081104.jpg

Interestingly, these vests feature 6/12 technology on the front and PALS at the rear. This is so a user won’t place any comma devices at the rear and route the cables internally and possibly foul a quick release.

20130912-081119.jpg

Here you can see the internal cable management afforded by the 6/12.

20130912-081134.jpg

Above, is a shot of how the plates are carried. Under this concept, the Soldier dons he plates only when needed and can wear a much lower profile frag vest for other tasks.

DSEi – DEFCON 5

Tuesday, September 10th, 2013

I was very pleased to run across DEFCON 5, an Italian tactical gear producer. I had a great talk with Director Salvatore Marra. I did not know that they have US distribution via DEFCON 5 USA.

He showed me a new Sniper Suit developed in conjunction with French SOF.

20130910-150607.jpg

This new suit integrates a variety of features including an underarm mesh ventilation system.

20130910-150627.jpg

The adjustable hood can be stowed and incorporates tabs (as does the entire uniform) to attach scrim and other camouflage to transform the suit into a ghillie.

20130910-150741.jpg

As you can see, they’ve also added a forearm information holder.

20130910-150818.jpg

There are integrated Cordura knee pads and elbow pads as well as pockets galore which utilize the Canadian-style slotted buttons.

20130910-150853.jpg

As you can see, the skirt of the smock features PALS webbing and will accept pouches.

20130910-151005.jpg

Finally, this garment is made in the Multiland pattern.

The PUP Taco from Bawidamann & HSGI

Friday, August 30th, 2013

What do you get when you combine the HSGI Taco with a Bawidamann PUP.

20130829-202838.jpg

According to Bawidamann, this is what you do:

Tools needed: 4 hands, Phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, some patience, and tons of swearing. Installing a HSGI TACO onto anything is not fun. This is ESPECIALLY NOT FUN. But the end result is worth the hassle. Just another thing you can do with this handy piece of kit.

Adjustable to securely fit: 1 inch – 3 inch belts in 3/8 inch increments. Move retention Post-nut/Screw assembly up or down the face of the PUP in a “diagonal checkers jump” to designated belt width fit. Further fit is controlled by adjusting tension on rubber washers of the Belt retention Post-nut/Screw. Tighten the screw, the rubber washers expand, and retention increases.

Btw, my friend Andrew Bawidamann shared a sneak peek at his latest piece, a Spartan Girl. That guy is like a bottle of fine wine. He gets better and better with age.

Can’t wait to see the finished piece.

This photo from Mayflower customer CT shows that you can use that UW Gen IV chest rig for things other than just carrying magazines. Just show this photo to your wife or SO before you purchase one as a means to persuade them that it truly is a great investment.
