The TNVC NVG-PPE is a new solution to an old problem–a modern, practical, and useful update to the classic green “lunch sack” NVG Carrying Case, and designed in-house at TNVC.

One of the most common yet baffling accessories usually included with night vision devices is green soft case, issued by the thousands with USGI AN/PVS-14s and often provided with many night vision systems. While the “lunch sack” undoubtedly does in fact do its job of carrying night vision devices, it doesn’t really do much to protect the device or keep the contents of the case and basic issue items (BII) organized–as a storage, shipping, and carrying case, it leaves a great deal to be desired, causing many users to seek alternative solutions.

In our continuing efforts to improve not only existing products, but their accessories, we decided to take another look at the NVG carrying case and re-design it from the ground up. In examining other solutions and alternatives on the market, we found that carrying cases and pouches tended to come in either one of two main categories:

– Hard-sided cases of varying quality that were primarily designed for shipping and administrative storage, but were often far larger than they had to be and not very useful in the field

– Too small and/or overtly specific in and that they either only fit a single device or type of device, but none of the common accessories or BII that some users might want to keep with their NVGs, or that would only support one specific application/method of carry

Moreover, in many cases, NVG-specific storage and carrying solutions tended to be surprisingly expensive for what they are.

The TNVC NVG Pouch, Padded Expandable was designed to not only be a useful OEM carrying case solution for shipping and storage of TNV NVG systems, but also to an adaptable and practical NVG pouch that could realistically be used in the field by a wide range of end-users with a wide variety of units, accessories, and configurations at a lower cost than many other NVG-specific case/carrying options.

The TNVC NVG-PPE has multiple zipper-secured compartments with multiple ways to access them, allowing you to not only securely carry and transport your single or dual tube night vision device, but any accessories you might need as well. The main pocket can support a dual tube night vision device with an ECOTI, or even dual PVS-14s and a FLIR Breach, while the secondary compartment can hold ancillary equipment and can be accessed either from the main compartment or from the outside.

The NVG-PPE also has a large Velcro loop panel on the lid, allowing ID/Callsign patches or placards to be placed on the pouch to identify individual pouches, as well as a rapid closure/compression/cinch strap with a Fastex buckle

The secondary compartment is also expandable with zippered 4-way stretch Tweave material, allowing you to securely carry small accessories such as spare batteries, cleaning supplies, etc., with the compartment collapsed, or larger items such as mounts, external battery packs, or any other equipment that you may want to keep with your night vision device when expanded. The soft-sided pouch is also sized so that it can be carried inside of a helmet for extra protection and to keep your gear together.

While we do not recommend attaching the TNVC NVG-PPE to individually worn first or second-line load-carrying gear, the NVG-PPE also has PALS webbing and is supplied with MALICE clips that offer a wide variety of options for mounting the pouch to MOLLE platforms like seat cover panels, range bags, or packs.

The TNVC NVG-PPE pouch isn’t designed to be the be-all, end-all of night vision cases, but rather to be a value-added alternative to some of the more useless alternatives that come with many night vision devices—even if you don’t use it for your night vision, it’s a highly adaptable general purpose pouch that gives you a lot of options for different mission essential gear that provides some protection for the contents, but is not overly bulky or difficult to transport.

Mystery Ranch – RFAK & VLAK

Thursday, December 10th, 2020

An essential aspect of preparedness is medical supplies and training. The ability to self-stabilize and package yourself, potential patients, or family members will depend on your ability to respond quickly to any situation. MYSTERY RANCH offers two basic medical pouches.

VLAK in use. Photo by: TacGas

The Removable First Aid Kit (RFAK) and Vehicle Litter Aid Kit (VLAK) are two small medical pouches from MYSTERY RANCH built to handle essential medical tasks with expandable-organization in mind. Their application excels with on-person or vehicle-based missions – from the residential, tactical urban, mission-essential or wilderness backcountry environments.

RFAK and VLAK both offer quick, one-handed visual access to your essential medical supplies organized inside – allowing for pressure or stabilization while accessing the necessary medical solution stored inside.

The history of MYSTERY RANCH medical kits:

IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit) and VLAK (Vehicle Litter Aid Kit) were initially designed around 2010 in response to an RFP for a SOCOM Tactical Combat Causality Care program. Both pouches were designed with quick one-handed entry, ensuring fast rip-open access to med supplies. This design was based on the previously developed Rip-Zip pockets, turned upside down for this application.

The Ranch was a sub-contractor on the bid, providing nylon that the prime contractor would kit out with the medical supplies. The prime contractor wasn’t awarded the contract, but SOCOM quickly reached out praising the design built by MYSTERY RANCH. Since then, these have been staples of the Ranch’s in-line program.

RFAK – Removable First Aid Kit

The original MYSTERY RANCH IFAK was redesigned in 2016 based on user feedback from those downrange. The primary redesign element was the ability to remove the internal medical kit while the IFAK outer stayed attached. As shown below, the internal component are now removable so that with one hand, a user could pull the entire contents out of the shell in a tight little bundle. This allowed self-administration of aid or the ability to toss the bundle to someone else who needs it. With this design change, we re-named the product RFAK (Removable First Aid Kit). The RFAK is a compact, yet expandable and removable, individual first aid kit. It features a MOLLE attach system and is sized to keep a low profile.

No matter if this is placed on your kit, in your go-bag, or in any of your day-to-day belongings. The RFAK contains enough space for an individual’s essential medical supplies.

VLAK – Vehicle Litter Aid Kit

The VLAK is the next step-up in medical kit size, while maintaining the same single-handed utility and MOLLE attachment as the RFAK. It includes a long, detachable strap connected to the top to sling it over a vehicle headrest, or your shoulder while heading to the X. It can also be attached to an assault vest and body armor.

VLAK is a common acronym for this type of larger IFAK designed to be primarily vehicle based for responders to a mass casualty event. This size adapts to family or crew needs with vehicle mobility in mind. The VLAK is sized to hold two RFAK’s worth of gear, to either refill RFAK’s or triage several patients. The VLAK was designed to address medical resupply storage in vehicles.

The Litter in the name refers to its ability to carry a compressed and ultra-light litter under the two compression straps on the top of the VLAK. As such, it is larger than the RFAK so that it can carry larger and additional medical items along with standard medical gauze, clotting agent, etc.

RFAK and VLAK Manufacturing and Distribution

Both of these medical pouches are currently made in the USA and are Berry Compliant, and available for civilian purchase.

We also manufacture an Asia-sourced version that is supplied to the Norwegian Military, as MYSTERY RANCH is a subcontractor for most of the Nylon on Norway’s current TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) program. Some version of most of our medical packs and pouches are being issued widely there since 2018.

We are pleased to collaborate with our friends at North American Rescue for kitting out our medical packs for these photos and videos. Please contact NARescue customer service to order medical contents as shown.

Sneak Peek – Snigel Designs Light Combat Belt 1.0

Thursday, December 3rd, 2020

Coming soon from Snigel Designs is their Light Combat Belt 1.0. As you can tell by the name, it’s lightweight, at between 360-380 grams, depending on size.

It’s PALS compatible and the webbing is sewn on 8 cm wide panels, with slots between the panels, so that the inner belt can be woven inside or outside, depending on whether you want PALS mounting or belt mounting for holsters and other accessories.

The foam/1 mm DDPE padding can be removed if you want an even slimmer belt. On the inside of the belt, Velcro loop stripes are sewn to match/connect with a trousers belt that has Velcro hook on the outside.

The inner belt is removable and can replaced with a riggers belt to combine the features of both belts.

Finally, there are four D-rings located at the top of the belt, soaced two fore and two aft, to attach suspenders.

UPDATE – Frank Woods – Belt Set Up

Tuesday, December 1st, 2020

Since I’ve been asked about my belt setup a few times recently, and I needed to take new pictures of my belt as it’s currently set up anyway, here’s what I use:

– Emdom MM CM Belt

— Emdom MM CM Belt pads (Left & Right)

— First Spear AGB point pad (Center)

– Safariland 6305RDS ALS/SLS

— Glock 34 Gen 5 MOS/RMR, Ranger Green variety

– S&S Precision Holster Extender w/ GRT adjustable ride height mount

– Dark Angel Slim Gen 2 IFAK

– HSGI leg rig, blank MOLLE platform

— Tyr Tactical Combat Adjustable Pouches

— 2x Rifle, 3x Pistol

– Blue Force Gear Ten Speed Dump Pouch

This setup retains pistol, IFAK, and consistent point of reload regardless of which torso worn LBE is being used, if any. The Tyr Tactical pouches are like a better version of the TACO, and accommodate 5.56 & 7.62 sized mags easily, while offering additional retention between both the bungees and the interior surface of the pouches not being slick smooth plastic.

The belt itself is lined with PALS webbing, which allows for pouch attachment without a big thick padded sleeve. The belt pads, while making the belt fit tighter, add a friction lock of sorts that prevents the belt from rotating while I’m wearing it.

Though the S&S adjustable ride height holster mount hasn’t given me a problem, and helps when going from sitting to standing/walking, I’ve been seriously considering switching over to the True North Concepts, LLC MHA if it means I can:

1.) Delete the forward cant and situate the holster straight up and down.

2.) Using a leg strap would provide for the holster staying secure against my leg and not pulling outward and away from my leg while trying to draw the pistol. That’s always annoying.

I upgraded/replaced the dragon whatever buckle that comes with the Emdom MM CM belt with a 2″ aluminum cobra buckle from Milspec Monkey.

Leg rig allows me to spread the load and distribute the weight and not have it all concentrated at/on my belt line. I do that shit at work as mandated by policy, I’m not a huge fan. Reloads are located where my hand naturally falls at my side.

UPDATE – 23 March, 2021

Since this article was posted, I have modified my HSGI leg rig so that it would stop sagging and tilting outwards/away from my body under the weight of the loaded magazines, due to the slack in the straps.

I’ll walk you guys through it in case you wanna do it on your own.

This modification took some minor effort to make it work, but nothing difficult and nothing permanent. The end result is that the leg rig rides much higher and conforms to my leg without sagging or tilting away, much to my satisfaction.

First I unclipped the buckles and took the leg rig off the belt, then I removed the male end buckles and the straps they were sewn into from the belt.

Then I got a good grip on the female end buckles attached to the leg rig itself (they’re attached via velcro, just give em a decent yank and they’ll come off,) and set them aside.

I put the QASM buckle loops (2″ variety) onto my belt and looped their straps through the PALS webbing on the inside of the belt.

Then I took the male end buckle loops, and slipped them through the PALS webbing on the leg rig upside down, reversed from their original orientation. Now the buckles are facing up, and the tri-glide is keeping them locked into the PALS webbing.

Ideally, I’d like to find male end buckles sewn into hook side velcro backed nylon straps, not unlike the female side buckles that come with the leg rig initially that I took off. Maybe I can send the ones I have to someone that can modify them.

Otherwise, tying a knot in the excess nylon strap under the tri-glide will keep it from pulling through the tri-glide under tension while it’s clipped in. Honestly though, the leg strap itself keeps enough tension on my leg to keep the rig from moving up and down.

After it’s all said and done, clip the newly located male end buckles on the leg rig into the QASM buckles on the belt, put it on, fasten the leg strap, and marvel at the new height and non-droopy stature of your leg rig platform.

Go forth and slay.

AttackPAK Viper EDC Belt

Monday, November 30th, 2020

AttackPAK designs modular load bearing equipment that lets you build custom kit. They have reimagined and patented what 1st line gun belts can do: Optimum load distribution, light weight, ergonomic shape, stiff, durable, hydrophobic, and modular. The Reaper is a proprietary laminate of reinforced thermoplastic combined with multi layers of Cordura and hank material that is laser cut. The lite-weight version has a smooth exterior and comes in at 1/3 the weight of a comparable webbing gun belt, with all of the stiffness and strength that you need. Compatible with PALS, hook/loop, and slip-on/clamp on accessories for 1.75” belts.

The scalable modular platform is planned for quick use changes and smart investment. With 4 parts you can easily go from pants belt, inner and outer gun belt, or a grip belt over clothing. You can also add the AttackPAK Gravity Pocket and ExoSpine™ to integrate a pack, redistributing weight to your hips and legs, off your shoulders and spine.

The Viper EDC inner belt is a smart looking pants belt that can be ordered in many color combinations from mild to wild. The belt is built with rigid 1.5” scuba webbing base reinforced with 1” webbing. It is fitted with a 1” low profile AustriAlpin Cobra buckle for reliability and durability.

The Viper EDC belt can be ordered covert/reversible with 1.5” loop on the interior surface, or overt with 1” loop on the exterior. The interior of the Reaper has 1” hook to mate with the loop surface on the Viper EDC, making a 2-layer belt that interlocks with your pants belt.

The Delta Grip Pad can be added quickly to wear over clothing. It also has an ergonomic shape and can be attach to any standard hook lined gun belts. The interior is built with stretched rubberized diamond plate to secure the belt in place and prevent ripples or hot spots when wrapped around your waist. The pad is 3” tall, made with ¼” thick firm closed cell foam. When tested in conjunction with the Reaper Belt, the system only gains x% weight after 30 min submerged, making it truly hydrophobic.

For the guys that need lanyard retention, the Reaper belt can be ordered with 1” load rated AustriAlpin Cobra buckle and continuous 1” tubular webbing on the exterior surface. The weight of the belt is still 50% of a comparable webbing belt.

The Reaper has all of the features that you need in a gun belt, including rigidity.

AttackPAK, Denver Colorado, has been developing gun belts with pack integration for almost a decade. Their focus has been to eliminate redundant weight and improve ergonomics to reduce burden and better protect war fighters. Their products create a system that can be user customized, making cross over use for Police, 1st responders, shooting athletes, and outdoorsmen a natural.
