Competition

Facing extreme heat and multiple team injuries, Long Beach SWAT Team 1 managed to defend their 1st Place Overall status with a time of 00:22:43.79 in the Tactical Team Competition! Placing 2nd Overall was Ontario PD 2, followed by Torrance PD Team 1 in 3rd place, Long Beach SWAT Team 2 in 4th place, and Ontario PD 1 coming in 5th. Perhaps most impressive about Long Beach SWAT Team 1’s performance was that they beat out the other 27 competing tactical teams in 4 of the 5 individual events, placing 1st in the Handgun, Carbine, Obstacle Relay, and Combat Courses, and 3rd in the Fittest Operator Challenge.

During the 2-day competition teams faced 105° temperatures while completing a series of rigorous obstacle and shooting courses. Team members were tested in their marksmanship, teamwork, and fitness. Competitions during AARTAC2016 included the Team Combat Course, Tactical Carbine Course, Handgun Course, O-Course Relay, and the Fittest Operator Challenge which pitted the fastest member of each team head to head against another team’s fastest member in an obstacle course sprint. The Team Combat Course featured numerous obstacles including walls, squeeze panels, and an unclimbable chain link fence, as well as sniper, carbine, and handgun courses of fire. The O-Course Relay was a spectator favorite, pitting teams against each other to race the course as fast as possible. The Monkey Bars proved to be more of a challenge than many teams expected, and nicknamed the “Widowmaker” during the competition, the obstacle saw many competitors lose their grip and fall to the dust below.

Training

Attendees at AARTAC2016 had the opportunity to take part in unique training provided by industry-leading instructors. Hawthorne Police Department’s Tac Med Division provided 2 full days of their Tactical Medicine Course. Outfitted with SB Tactical’s iCombat system, students in this course learned a variety of tactical medicine skills designed to provide immediate live-saving first aid as first responders arrive prior to medical crews. The National Tactical Officer’s Association (NTOA) presented SWAT Leadership by Design, a full day course providing a high level view of some of the most contemporary and pressing issues facing SWAT leaders today. Taught by Ed Allen, the course discussed many topics including recruitment of tomorrow’s SWAT operator and developing intentional training. The California Association of Tactical Operator’s (CATO) Gas and Chemical Agent Instructor Cadre (CAI) provided a course presenting topics related to the tactical use of chemical agents including liability and structural decontamination. Richard Odenthal of CATO also presented Controlling Tactical Responses using The Event Matrix which taught students the importance of task management during a tactical response.

Vendor Expo

This year’s Vendor Expo featured many market-leading brands providing hands on demonstration of their products ranging from high end tactical electronics to tactical armor. Robotex was in attendance with the Avatar III Tactical Robot as well as its Extended Reach Manipulator Arm. Attendees were able to participate in Robot Races, racing the robot around a mini obstacle course for the fastest time. Project 7 was on hand demonstrating its tactical entry vest and had employees available to discuss the design and ballistics of the groundbreaking vest. Protech Tactical, TCI, Defense Technology, and Safariland Duty Gear were all represented by The Safariland Group with AARTAC attendees able to get hands on with the latest offerings in body armor, less lethal munitions, and communications equipment as well as discuss the products with subject matter experts and product designers of the various brands represented.

Velocity Systems Officially Announces the Acquisition of the Mayflower Research & Consulting Brand

Friday, June 17th, 2016

Dulles, VA – June 17, 2016 – Velocity Systems officially announces they acquired the Mayflower Research and Consulting Brand. For some of you this is not a new concept because Velocity Systems and Mayflower Research and Consulting have been operating as a team to collaboratively develop protective gear for the last 7 and a half years.

The need for the partnership occurred in 2008 when the demand for Mayflower gear was increasing exponentially and Travis Rolph’s services were needed by our country in a different capacity. While Travis continued to design all products under the Mayflower name, Velocity Systems began handling the logistics and manufacturing of all Mayflower products.

The decision was made that Velocity Systems and Mayflower were a good fit due to both companies’ dedication to produce quality products at the speed of need. Both companies were also committed to research and development and listening to feedback in order to create products tailored to fit the needs of the individuals that protect and serve our country. In January of 2014, Velocity Systems officially acquired the Mayflower Brand. Throughout the partnership and acquisition this dedication and commitment only grew stronger and has created a more competitive and efficient global provider of protective products, and solutions.

While the acquisition has not been a secret, the decision was made to wait a substantial period of time before making an official public announcement. Both brands have a loyal customer base and wanted to take the opportunity to prove the merge would only enhance the product offerings. David Strum, Velocity Systems President had this to say about the acquisition, “The joining of the two brands allowed us to leverage operating efficiencies and concentrate more on the end user’s needs. This created more time for research and development, and collaborative design opportunities. The change resulted in a more comprehensive portfolio featuring high-quality products with leading technology.”

Throughout the last 7 and a half years Dave Strum has remained the primary designer for Velocity Systems products and Travis Rolph has remained the primary designer for Mayflower Brand products. While the two specialize in their own niche, the merge has allowed them to work together collaboratively using their unique strengths to develop best-in-class designs.

Moving forward the Mayflower Brand will go by the name Mayflower R&C By Velocity Systems and can be purchased as product line under the Velocity Systems name. In order to more efficiently streamline the sales of Velocity Systems gear and the Mayflower R&C By Velocity Systems product line, Velocity Systems is launching a new website showcasing both under one roof. As of June 20, 2016 please visit www.velsyst.com to check out the new website.

New Nightforce Competition SR Fixed 4.5 x 24 Ready for Service Rifle Competition

Thursday, June 16th, 2016

The popularity of Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and NRA service rifle matches, combined with recent rule changes, have resulted in the new CompetitionTM SR Fixed 4.5 x 24 riflescope by Nightforce.

NFO_CompSRFixed4_angle

The CompetitionTM SR Fixed 4.5 x 24 is purpose-built to comply with 2016 rules that, for the first time, allow the use of riflescopes having a maximum magnification of 4.5x, objective lens diameter to 34mm, and combined weight of optic and service rifle to 11.5 pounds.

NFO_CompSRFixed4_side

The new CompetitionTM SR Fixed 4.5 x 24 is built on a 30mm tube. It provides 100 MOA of both elevation and windage adjustment, in precise .25 MOA increments. The exposed adjustments feature large, easy-to-read engraving, and 20 MOA per revolution. Parallax is fixed at 200 yards, providing a parallax-free image for all service rifle and high power distances. The compact riflescope measures 9.9 inches in length and weighs just 15.4 ounces. It includes patented Nightforce ZeroStopTM technology that allows an instant, positive return to the shooter’s chosen zero setting, regardless of how many elevation adjustments have been made.

NFO_SR-1_Reticle

The SR-1 reticle was created specifically to maximize the new riflescope’s performance. This new, non-illuminated reticle has heavy posts at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions, and a 10 MOA center circle with 8 MOA crosshair which will appear visually familiar to iron sight shooters. It is standard in the CompetitionTM SR Fixed 4.5 x 24.

NFO_CompSRFixed4_Mounted

Nightforce has also introduced the new Unimount™ SR, a rugged, lightweight mounting solution designed specifically to complement the new riflescope and provide the preferred “nose to charging handle” positioning preferred by most service rifle shooters. The Unimount™ SR will fit any 30 mm riflescope, offering 20 MOA of taper while producing the performance of steel at half the weight.

NFO_UnimountSR_Angle

The CompetitionTM SR Fixed 4.5 x 24 will retail at $1950 and the UnimountTM SR will retail at $260. Nightforce CompetitionTM riflescopes are engineered specifically to help shooters not just compete, but to win at any level.
