Eco Defense Group Uses StarLink to Stop Poachers

Friday, June 23rd, 2023

Eco Defense Group is a unique consultancy designed to develop and implement solutions in areas of poaching crisis in Africa.

In the past, they’ve created, supplied and mentored marine and special operations units, built and guided training programs, partnered with the most important parks in Africa and even helped firefighters jump out of helicopters on fast ropes. We’ve just been shown that this past month, Eco Defense Group has taken an interesting step to use satellites — and the ingenuity of Elon Musk — to make possible communications where they have never before been available.

Pursuing a unique partnership last month, the non profit deployed field teams to remote areas of national parks in Africa with portable Starlink devices to aide in countering specific poaching crises. Where they go, even the group can’t admit to—and that’s the point of how effective.

Certain areas in Southern Africa are wild — truly wild — and necessarily the home of the endangered and threatened species that wildlife Rangers professionals work tirelessly to protect. In these areas, infrastructure is limited, communications sometimes impossible and the execution of counter-poaching strategies to defend wildlife can be remarkable difficult, even with the training and tools that groups like Eco Defense Group provide.

Now the group has started to deliver sponsored Starlink devices as the Starlink “Constellation” has begun to glitter the night sky over Africa. One can imagine that this will be a game changer for wildlife protection along with a variety of unconsidered industries working in remote places.

Eco Defense Group is one of the more innovative non-profits that we’ve seen (even if you rarely see much of them), and this kind of intelligent thinking is exactly why they are both effective and invisible.

The modern world, having ignored the crisis of African animals that are being poached to extinction, has arguably now offered a tool that could, in places, change the game against the poachers that seek rhino, lion, elephant and other species for black market exploitation.

Bushnell and RCBS Pro Robert Brantley Takes Top Tactical at 2023 K&M Kahles PRS Match

Thursday, June 22nd, 2023

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – June 21, 2023 – Bushnell®, an industry leader in performance optics, along with RCBS®, the leading manufacturer of ammunition reloading equipment for rifles and pistols, congratulates pro shooter Robert Brantley for taking first place in the Tactical Division at 2023 K&M Kahles Precision Rifle Competition. Brantley, who used an Elite Tactical XRS3 riflescope to secure the win, has now won Top Tactical in back-to-back PRS events.

“This year’s match was incredibly difficult, with lots of targets unforgiving of any scope that doesn’t track or hold zero,” said Brantley. “However, with the Elite Tactical XRS3 these things were a non-issue and the G4P reticle allowed me to easily hold on the smallest of targets. The mover holds on the G4P also lined up perfectly, making light work of the three stages with moving targets.”

Brantley, who opted to use a new competition rig chambered in .308, mounted the rifle with a new scope three weeks before the match. Despite not having used either the rifle or scope in competition, his confidence remained high.

“I enjoy shooting the .308 as it doesn’t mask any of your flaws and forces you to stay in it,” said Brantley. “You must nail your wind calls, manage recoil and account for the drop in the heavier load. When shooting Tac, my goal is to always try and finish within the top ten of the Open winner. Having quality gear that you can rely on makes this a possibility.”

Brantley also relied on his RCBS reloading setup to prepare for the match, including his Rock Chucker® Supreme Press, MatchMaster Dies, Bench Primer, Case Prep Center, Chargemaster Supreme powder dispenser, and Ultrasonic Case Cleaner.

“My RCBS reloading setup is great because it helps me tailor my ammunition to my exact needs,” Brantley said. “I have more control over every detail so I can trust my ammunition will be consistent and accurate.”

On June 17, 2023, the MACH-TB program successfully launched its first suborbital testbed vehicle in a critical step forward toward advancing U.S. hypersonic technology.

To compete with U.S. adversaries, we must rapidly prototype and vet new technology at the speed of mission. The Multiservice Advanced Capability Test Bed (MACH-TB) project, is a dynamic initiative engineered to effectively evaluate and demonstrate hypersonic capabilities prior to integration into existing weapon systems.

“As the hypersonic race intensifies, there is an urgent need to quickly prototype and test this technology,” said S²MARTS Director Doug Crowe. “The MACH-TB launch announcement marks a pivotal stride forward in preserving America’s unrivaled technical dominance.”

The Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane division, leveraging the Strategic and Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S²MARTS) Other Transaction Authority (OTA), awarded the MACH-TB contract to Dynetics in September 2022. Supported by a formidable consortium of 12 subcontractors, the MACH-TB program is tasked with designing an experimental glide body that will undergo rigorous hypersonic capability tests to bolster various Department of Defense (DoD) initiatives.

The collective power of American innovators in the hypersonic race cannot be underestimated. Of the performers supporting MACH-TB, eight are non-traditional organizations who are new to defense, now standing shoulder-to-shoulder with established industry players. Through the S²MARTS OTA, the DoD successfully eliminated barriers to entry and expanded its reach to the nation’s premier commercial innovators, introducing groundbreaking technologies into the fold.

A collaborative partnership between national and DoD laboratories, academia, small businesses, non-traditional defense enterprises, and industry titans will foster the development and demonstration of hypersonic glide vehicle capabilities. These cutting-edge technologies will solidify America’s unassailable position in the realm of hypersonic technology.
