Griffin Armament Releases 3D Printed Optimus 6 Suppressors

Griffin Armament’s history with metal printed suppressors goes back to 2008 with prototype applications. We felt the technology was neither developed nor cost-effective enough to be viable and publicly accepted for a long portion of that time. The hope of more manufacturing applications in other industries being supported and costs of equipment reducing, as well as capabilities and technology increasing, were considerable factors in waiting for the technology to mature. Griffin’s Optimus® 6 is our first printed production suppressor. The Optimus® 6 is a powder metal additive manufactured 6mm capable suppressor optimized for the 5.56mm AR-15 platform. Complex internal baffle geometries were painstakingly prototyped and tested to yield a suppressor with low system backpressure and exceptional flash reduction.

The Optimus® 6 is constructed entirely of 17-4 H900 Heat-Treated Stainless Steel, and is available in three mounting variations: DUAL-LOK®, Griffin Taper Mount, and an industry-standard HUB (1.375×24 TPI) interface for use with HUB mount adapters. The printed baffle stack is welded to a machined rear housing that bears the serial number making warranty and repair work performable without the need to resubmit the lengthy Form 4 process for a new serial number. This is a problem with fully printed cans that hasn’t been adequately addressed in the market. A 1.73” outer diameter was chosen to allow increased internal volume – contributing to its sub-140 dB SPL.

Flash reduction is often seen as more important than sound reduction for military and LE applications, but both categories tend to suffer when creating suppressors with very low-restrictive baffling. The Optimus® 6 endcap was developed to address the inherent increase in flash signature coupled with LBP suppressors. This unique quad-prong end cap features complex internal and external flash-hiding geometries to bring highly competitive flash suppression to the LBP suppressor market. The Optimus® 6 is a thoughtful combination of traditional and new technologies yielding a low backpressure suppressor that is easily repairable, highly durable, at a reasonable weight, while exhibiting top of the line sound and flash reduction at a lower price than many other printed suppressors on the market.

In some aspects, it improves the ease with which a geometry is created, and in others, there are limitations like low overhang angles that are impossible depending on the method used. We are happy to introduce the Optimus 6 to market, and to begin using additive manufacturing for some of our suppressor designs. The Optimus 6 is one of the most-performing 5.56mm cans I have used. One of the first customers to see the suppressor was a Law Enforcement department that liked the suppressor enough to place a large pre-order. B&T USA Files Federal Lawsuit Against SureFire, LLC Alleging Patent Abuse and Interference

Tampa, FL (June 2nd, 2025) – B&T USA, LLC and its parent company B&T AG of Thun, Switzerland, have initiated legal proceedings in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida against SureFire, LLC. The complaint seeks a declaratory judgment of non-infringement and patent invalidity and brings claims for breach of contract and tortious interference.

This action follows a series of unwarranted legal threats made by SureFire, which has sought to disrupt B&T’s lawful commercial activities by alleging infringement of U.S. Patent No. 7,676,976 — despite knowing that the underlying technology, B&T’s proprietary Rotex quick-detach suppressor system, was developed, publicly displayed, and sold to U.S. government end users years prior to SureFire’s patent application.

Despite clear evidence of B&T’s prior invention — including exports to the United States and documented use by the U.S. Navy — SureFire failed to disclose this information to the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This material omission calls into question the enforceability of the asserted patent and the good faith underlying SureFire’s conduct.

Moreover, B&T and SureFire had previously reached a mutual understanding: that B&T would not challenge SureFire’s patent so long as SureFire refrained from asserting it against B&T or its customers. SureFire’s recent actions constitute a clear breach of that agreement, forcing B&T to take legal action to protect its rights, its reputation, and its longstanding customer relationships. B&T has pursued every reasonable path to resolve this dispute privately and professionally. Unfortunately, SureFire’scontinued and deliberate actions have left no other choice.

Rampart Range Day 25 – Colt Canada

Due to Canadian content laws, Colt Canada provides small arms to the Department of National Defence.

The Canadian military is currently working on an upgrade to their C8 carbines. Colt Canada showed off the latest version of their line of rifles, the C8 Modular Rail Ambidextrous Rifle in 5.56 NATO (Colt Canada also makes the MRR in 300 BLK).

It features a fully ambidextrous lower receiver with ambi bolt catch and release and well as fire selector switch.

This version with the 14.5” barrel is considered the general service variant and is intended for Combat Support and Combat Service Support personnel while close combatants will wield a carbine with an 11.6” barrel. As you can see, it is fitted with the Millbrook Strategic Sciences Multi Function Muzzle Device. The MFMD is timed and permanently affixed to the barrel and is currently already adopted by CANSOFCOM.

I had an opportunity to fire the 11.6 barrel version as well as a C20 sniper rifle in 7.62 NATO. Both were fitted with the MFMD. Although the MFMD is technically a two component system with a clip-on module which offers an additional 3db of attenuation, most don’t bother with the added weight. I was concerned that the carbine would feel unbalanced toward the muzzle but I didn’t notice it at all during firing. This is because most of the MFMD is mounted over the barrel and behind the muzzle. Additionally, although the device looks like a large block, most of it is hollow, filled with chases for the gas to run and escape.

This is a conceptual prototype of what a C8A4 might well look like. However, don’t surprised if the enabled change. For instance, DND still hasn’t decided on which suppressor and variable power optic they are going to field.

ASA Lauds House Passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill, Including Removal of Suppressors from NFA

SOF Select 25 – Strategic Sciences

This photo, taken in the Strategic Sciences booth, combines two things that readers find fascinating: the Knight’s Armament Co Light Assault Machine Gun in 5.56mm and Strategic Science’s Multi Function Muzzle Device, a new suppressor technology developed in conjunction with the Irregular Warfare Technology Support Directorate.

The Canadian arm of the company, Millbrook Strategic Sciences Inc, has signed a deal with CANSOFCOM for the devices and here in the US they’ve been trying them out on every NATO weapon (including those under development) they can get their hands on. Available in multiple calibers from 5.56 up to 50 BMG, expect to see a lot of these floating around soon.

SOF Select 25 – HUXWRX

The latest suppressor form HUXWRX is referred to as “Black Magic” due to the internal string of letters used to describe the design.

This 5.56 can uses their patented flow through design. It’s printed from Inconel 718 with an Armorlube coating which acts similarly to DLC.

Here you can see the locking collar.

It is used with a printed and machined Inconel flash hider. It’s not a good idea to combine suppressors and muzzle devices form different materials due to varied wear. They print the blank and then do the finish work.
