USMC Awards H&K Sole Source Contract For 15,000 Additional M27 IARs

Friday, April 27th, 2018

The United States Marine Corps has awarded Heckler & Koch $29,427,750 for 15,000 M27 Infantry Automatic Rifles. This culminates efforts over the past couple of years to increase issue of this rifle to the Marine rifle squad. In February, 2017, the Marines released their initial RFI to industry for production of additional M27s.

Below is the announcement:

Heckler and Koch Defense Inc.,* Ashburn, Virginia, is awarded a maximum ceiling $29,427,750 five-year, firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the purchase of up to a maximum 15,000 M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle systems and spare parts. Work will be performed at Oberndorf, Germany (70 percent); Columbus, Georgia (20 percent); and Ashburn, Virginia (10 percent), and is expected to be completed by April 30, 2023. Fiscal 2016 procurement (Marine Corps) funds in the amount of $37,536; fiscal 2017 procurement (Marine Corps) funds in the amount of $2,650,003; and fiscal 2018 procurement (Marine Corps) funds in the amount of $4,771,071 totaling $7,458,610, will be obligated on the first delivery order immediately following contract award. The fiscal 2016 funds in the amount of $37,536 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was awarded on a sole source basis under the authority of the Federal Acquisition Regulation, Part 6.302-1. The Marine Corps Systems Command, Quantico, Virginia, is the contracting activity (M67854-18-D-1248).

When you consider the relatively low numbers associated with this procurement, you must take into account Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen Robert Neller’s mantra, “All Marines are riflemen, but not all Marines are infantrymen.” Consequently, the Marine Corps is working hard to increase the lethality of their Infantry forces. However, despite knowing how many additional IARs they plan to buy, we still don’t know how the Marines plan to field them.

Last May, we reported the Marine Corps had determined that the M27 has the longest range in the squad and planned to capitalize on this capability.

In 2010, the Marines adopted the M27. Made in Germany, the IAR is based on the HK416, a piston driven 5.56mm rifle. The concept behind the IAR was to supplant the belt-fed M249 Squad Automatic Weapon in the Infantry Squad with the more compact box-fed design of the M27.

Since then, a small number of M27s have been fitted with an optical sight and redesignated as M38 Squad Designated Marksman Rifles.

Thursday, April 26th, 2018

Nashville, April 25, 2018: Arnold Defense, the US St Louis-based international manufacturer and supplier of 2.75-inch rocket launchers, is displaying its ultra-light LWL-12 2.75-inch/70mm Weapon System at the 2018 Army Aviation Mission Solutions Summit in Nashville, Tennessee, from April 25- 27.

Arnold Defense is the world’s largest supplier of rocket launchers; the Company has manufactured more than 1.1 million 2.75-inch rocket launchers since 1961 for the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and many NATO customers and allies. Arnold Defense designs and manufactures rocket launchers that can be customized for any size, weight, capacity or form factor for platforms in the air, on the ground or at sea.

Arnold Defense’s rocket launchers are designed and built with combat-proven technology and they comply with U.S. airworthiness and safety standards. The Company’s products include the ultra-light LWL-12 (on display on a UH-60 Black Hawk on the L3 WESCAM stand 1607) that weighs just over 60 pounds (27 kg) empty. Other core products include the 19-round M261 which is commonly used by helicopters; the thermal coated 7-round LAU-68 variants and LAU-61 Digital Rocket Launcher are used by the U.S. Navy and Marines; and the 7-round LAU-131 and SUU-25 flare dispenser are used by the U.S. Air Force and worldwide. The A-10 Warthog is being upgraded to include the Arnold LAU- 131/AA fitted with laser-guided rockets, making the A-10’s combat capability more effective than ever. Additionally, the FA-18 is undergoing an upgrade program involving the LAU-131/AA, for which tests are currently taking place.

Traditionally, 2.75-inch rocket systems have been used as an area suppression weapon, ordinarily deployed by aviation assets. The Arnold Defense team is currently developing the FLETCHER smart, laser-guided launcher system, which will be available during 2018. A special forces, vehicle-mounted FLETCHER prototype, unveiled in 2017 at both AUSA and DSEI, utilizes the advancement of laser- guided rocket technology to meet the modern demands of air, land and marine-based, mounted and dismounted asymmetric warfare, for special and conventional forces.

Chris Frillman, Arnold Defense’s Program Director Weapons Systems said: “After a busy year, where Arnold Defense has been introducing our combat-proven rocket launchers in various parts of the world, it is now good to be back on home turf. The Army Aviation Summit is close to our hearts and our roots and we look forward to meeting many old friends here, as well as making new ones ”. He added: “We like to say that the sky is NOT the limit. Through our experience and innovation, we are developing the next generation of laser-guided weapons systems for missions on land, sea, and air. Working together, we protect the warfighters of today and tomorrow, just as we have for the past half-century.”

Meet the Arnold Defense team on stand 1042, where you can fire virtual rockets from an Arnold Defense LWL-12 via an Apache combat flight simulator video game. Arnold Defense staff are on hand to explain their systems to visitors and specific briefings/interviews can be facilitated.

M27 Accessories Evaluated

Saturday, April 21st, 2018

I’ve been sitting on this photo for awhile, but now that it has made it out into the wild, I figure it’s ok to share.

img_8883.jpg

I’m told it was taken at Quantico Marine Corps Base at Weapons Training Bn, and I’ve had a copy of the photo for several months.

The three weapons were under evaluation, pursuant to the impending M27 fielding. You’ll also note a few BE Meyers’ MAWLs and Geissele accessories such as the Upper Receiver Group – Improved and High Speed Selector Switch as well as B5 Systems stocks. That’s not to mention the optics. The URG-I was looked at as an alternative to fielding additional M27s, but quickly dropped as the Marine Corps has laid a solid path forward.

However, let me be very clear about this. A lot of things have been looked at, but the M27 fielding is under such close scrutiny that no changes will be made to the additional weapons, expected to be fielded later this year. Any changes will come down the road.

Danish Armed Forces Selects SIG P320 X-Carry

Thursday, April 12th, 2018

This is something we haven’t discussed. Late last year, the Danish Armed Forces adopted the SIG P320 X-Carry based on a tender overseen by the Ministry of Defense’s Food and Purchasing Board (FMI). The pistols are supplied by local vendor, CT Solution Aps.

According to the Danish Army, a total of four guns were tested and they were subjected to “all conceivable conditions” by users of the Special Operations, Military Police, Air Force and Army. The P320 was the best candidate in the four-week trial period. The test program was prepared by Hærens Kamp- og Ildstøttecenter (HKIC) in cooperation with FMI. of malfunction test, accuracy test, shooting in the dark and field field. The gun was also tested by experts from Direct Shooting Weapons (DSV) at HKIC. made drop test, penetration test and precision test.

The P320 will be supplied in two versions, a standard and a concealed carry version. These will replace all pistols in the Armed Forces, such as the M / 49 which would only carry 8 rounds compated to the 21 rounds of the P320.

Fielding has begun and the new pistol is expected to be full fielded to all units by the end of 2019 with new equipmemt training to be completed by the Commonwealth Defense Command (VFK).

This video from the Danish Defense’s YouTube Channel depicts the testing.

Thanks Keld!
