Thursday, September 14th, 2023

Beretta debuted their New Assault Rifle Platform at DSEI. NARP is a short stroke piston platform with two gas position settings for normal and suppressed.

Currently chambered on 5.56 NATO, the representative assured me that other calibers are coming, including a scaled up 7.62 version.

It is fully ambidextrous and utilizes an AR-style rear charging handle. In addition to the M4-style collapsible buttstock, it will also accept a side folder.

There are currently three barrel lengths, 11.5″, 14.5″ (not shown in these photos), and 16″.

While they would not show me the internals, I was told that NARP features a lubricant free coating.

The max o/a LE th with a 14.5″ barrel and extended stock is 34.9″ and 31.7″ with the stock collapsed.

FN Releases Limited Production of SCAR 17S DMR in 6.5 Creedmoor

Tuesday, September 12th, 2023

(September 12, 2023 – McLean, VA) FN America, LLC is pleased to announce the release of a limited production of the FN SCAR® 17S Designated Marksman Rifle, or DMR, chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. The mid-range designated marksman configuration brings the 6.5CM caliber to the SCAR 17S platform for the first time and delivers an impressive, multi-purpose rifle enhanced to take advantage of the inherent accuracy and multi-role capability of the SCAR platform. The SCAR 17S in the DMR configuration features premium upgrades, including the precision buttstock assembly and Geissele 2-stage trigger that SCAR 20S owners rely on for surgical accuracy.

“The SCAR is the most tested rifle platform that FN has ever developed. It was designed to be lightweight, rugged, accurate and modular to give the user a rifle platform that could be configured to their needs,” said Chris Cole, Vice President of Sales for FN America, LLC. “This new and limited-time build demonstrates the modularity of the SCAR design by combining features of the SCAR 17S heavy carbine and the SCAR 20S precision rifle to create a one-of-a-kind, mid-range designated marksman rifle.”

The FN SCAR 17S DMR 6.5CM is upgraded from the standard carbine configuration with the addition of the SSR Rear Stock and Geissele SuperSCAR two-stage trigger. These upgrades, combined with match-grade ammunition and optics, enable greater precision for long range target engagements. The 16.25-inch 6.5 Creedmoor barrel is cold hammer-forged and chrome-lined for extreme durability and enduring accuracy, and features a 1:8-in twist, standard carbine profile and muzzle device. With a lighter weight barrel, the DMR handles swiftly and transitions to targets quickly, just like the SCAR 17S heavy carbine chambered in 7.62×51 NATO.

The monolithic aluminum receiver features MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rails to mount optics and accessories, as well as the SCAR-signature flip-up front and rear adjustable iron sights. The receiver is equipped with dual, non-reciprocating charging handles located on both sides of the rifle that are user-configurable for position and remain locked forward during fire.

Knight Armament Company Selected To Supply KS-1 Rifle Systems to UK Armed Forces

Tuesday, September 12th, 2023

Knights Armament Company is honored to be the supplier of the KS-1 rifle system to the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom in partnership with Edgar Brothers, Knight’s UK representative firm.

The KS-1 rifle system is the culmination of 40 years of ongoing refinement efforts to Mr. Eugene Stoner’s original 1955 design pattern, developed specifically to meet the quantifiable needs of specialized military units per PROJECT HUNTER’s requirements and testing.

The challenging requirements of this project brought the best of industry to present fully mature combat-ready rifle systems complete with magnified optics, suppressors, and accessories to the UK MoD for testing and trials. The level of performance expected of every aspect of the system required Knight’s Armament to employ cutting-edge materials and manufacturing methods in conjunction with innovative design and engineering, ultimately delivering the most advanced and feature-rich AR-type rifle to its next generation of service.

“Gene Stoner was my friend and mentor, and I believe he would be proud to know that his innovative concept continues to uphold freedom in the hands of our Nation’s greatest Ally.”

Britain’s Commandos to Get New Assault Rifles

Friday, September 8th, 2023

Britain’s elite Royal Marine Commando Forces will be stealthier and deadlier thanks to a new assault rifle.

The Knight’s Stoner 1 (KS-1) rifle (designated L403A1) headlines a host of new kit additions for the UK Commando Forces in ‘lead strike teams’ – those responsible for raiding and amphibious operations worldwide.

More than a thousand of the new rifles have been bought from US producers Knight’s Armament Company and come with advanced optical and thermal sights as well as suppressor (silencer) systems to make Commandos harder to trace and more formidable in combat.

The Commando Force regularly deploys around the globe in all extremes of environment – arctic, desert and jungle – reacting to crises and conducting a range of complex operations, including counter piracy and terrorism, drugs busts and humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

It means there is a need to put top-end kit in the hands of these specialist warriors to give them the upper hand on the battlefield.

A new rifle, night vision goggles, tactical communications systems, battlefield vehicles and ‘survivability systems’, including new helmets, communications and suppressors which make the force more difficult to detect, are to be rolled out as the Royal Navy makes an initial investment in new kit for its elite, very high readiness fighting force, with plans for a longer-term procurement programme from 2024.

Captain Nick Unwin RN, Commando Force Programme Director, said: “Delivery of quality equipment such as we see today is a genuine increase in capability and capacity for the UK’s Commando Force Strike Teams and offers significant tactical advantage to the user.

“The Commando Force Programme is delivering change across all areas of amphibious operations; this is just one small part of the wider change programme we are all embarked upon as we adjust to evolving threats and challenges.”

Alongside this new rifle and a new helmet made by Gentex, Commando Forces will take delivery of the new Fused Binocular Night Vision Device produced by L3Harris, giving them a significant advantage over their adversaries in night-time littoral operations, or as they move in darkness through confined spaces during boarding operations.

Again, more than a thousand have been procured and the systems feature advanced low-light image intensification with a fused thermal input – which means the devices include both night vision and thermal sensor superimposed into a single image for the operator – that far outperforms older systems currently used by the UK’s Armed Forces.

Commando Forces are also exploring how to use the night vision kit alongside digital communications systems, providing a live feed to the goggles to help commanders assess the battlefield and make decisions.

Meanwhile, advances are being made with upgrades to the Sharpshooter rifle.

The Lewis Machine and Tool L129A2 rifle is an improvement on the well-established Sharpshooter with new Leupold scopes and HuxWrx suppressors, making it more accurate and quieter.

It is also equipped with an Envision Technology ballistic calculator and a Pixels-on-Target thermal sight. Each Commando Strike Team will comprise two designated expert shooters equipped with these upgraded rifles.

£90 Million Contract Equips Armed Forces with Advanced New Rifle

Wednesday, September 6th, 2023

British troops will soon be more lethal on the battlefield, as a new £90 million contract delivers modern, high precision rifles.

From:

Ministry of Defence and James Cartlidge MP

Published

7 September 2023

The new advanced rifle.

• New rifle provides UK troops with an improved lethal capability on the battlefield.

• Rifle more discreet through sight and hearing signature reduction.

• Up to 10,000 weapons could be procured over the next 10 years.

British troops will soon be more lethal on the battlefield, as a new £90 million contract delivers modern, high precision rifles.

The Alternative Individual Weapon (AIW) system – known as the L403A1 and procured by Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) under Project HUNTER – is made up of a new assault rifle fitted with a muzzle signature reduction system and an improved optical sighting system.

The AIW is a modern rifle using the latest in design technology and manufacturing methods, to produce an exceptionally reliable and accurate weapon. The magnified optic means the user is able to engage threats from greater distances; whilst the signature reduction system works to mask the AIW from detection from sight and hearing.

Supplementing the current in-service L85A3, the AIW system has been secured under a £90 million contract with Macclesfield-based company Edgar Brothers, supporting the Prime Minister’s priority to grow the economy by helping sustain approximately 50 jobs at the family-owned company.

Minister for Defence Procurement, James Cartlidge said:

This is another example of how we are committed to investing in the most advanced battlefield equipment to back our troops on the battlefield. This advanced rifle’s ability to help soldiers maintain the stealth edge not only protects them but delivers war-fighting advantage over our adversaries.

An initial £15 million order of 1,620 AIW systems has been placed, with options to procure up to 10,000 systems – totalling £90 million – under the contract over the next decade. The systems will initially be fielded to the Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB) who operate in complex, high threat environments.

DE&S Dismounted Close Combat Portfolio Leader, Colonel Paul Cummings, said:

Project Hunter has been a fabulous example of close collaboration with the user community and strong engagement with industry to deliver game-changing capability at pace. This is another example of the enormous commitment of the men and women in DCC to deliver battle-winning capability into the hands of the user and I’m enormously proud of what they have achieved. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Edgar Brothers as we move into the production phase.

The L403A1 is a high performing modern development of the ArmaLite Rifle (AR), which pushes the boundaries of modern performance. As an AR system, it shares much in common with the rifle systems used by many of the UK’s allies. Given their specialist role, and the critical task of working with and alongside many of the UK’s allies, the platform will enable ASOB to share skills and drills in an efficient manner.

Lt Col Gareth Davies, SO1 SoldierWorks, Military Capability Delivery, Army Headquarters, said:

Project HUNTER has successfully delivered a new weapon option for UK Defence. At the current time this is being procured for the Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB). It offers a marked increase in lethality, and the system includes one of most capable day sights currently available. Importantly the weapon system will be further enhanced by our newest generation of night optics, with which the ASOB are already equipped.

As a key component of the ASOB, the Ranger Regiment will receive the AIW later this year. Made up of four battalions, the Rangers deployed to over 60 countries in their first 12 months of operation, following their formation as part Future Soldier under the Defence Command Paper 2021.

US Army Precision Grenadier System Update

Wednesday, August 30th, 2023

The US Army’s Precision Grenadier System effort we told you about last September is underway to handle counter defilade and counter UAS at the squad level.

The PGS shall be a Soldier portable, flat trajectory, semi-automatic, magazine fed, integrated armament system that enables precision engagements to destroy personnel targets in defilade and in the open with increased lethality and precision compared to legacy grenade launchers. The PGS is anticipated to be deployed as a Soldier’s primary weapon system and provide organic close-quarters combat and counter-defilade capabilities through a family of ammunition, providing overmatch to comparable threat grenade launchers in near-peer formations in future operating environments to include urban, woodland, subterranean, and desert, in day, night, or obscured conditions.

The Army is seeking a multi-shot grande launcher which integrates a sophisticated Fire Control System capable of programming rounds along with a family of programmable ammunition.

Family of Ammunition:

a. Counter Defilade Round: Round to precisely and quickly defeat personnel targets in defilade positions.

b. Training Round: Non-pyrotechnic round ballistically similar to the counter defilade round to train the PGS capability.

c. Close Quarters Battle Round: Round to precisely and quickly defeat personnel targets at ranges less than 35 meters.

d. Expanded Capabilities: Ability to expand capabilities is desired with different types of ammo such as:

i. Counter Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Round

ii. Armor-Piercing Round

Naturally, this will also require a power supply.

Additionally, PGS must be lethal from distances of 35m to 500M or longer against unprotected soldiers in both the open and in cover and with a time of flight no greater than 3 seconds out to 500 meters.

It is important to note that the Army has not specified caliber, but rather effect, and has left it open to the various vendors to create the complete system.

Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier partnered with the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology) (ASA(ALT)), to use the xTechSoldier Lethality competition as a platform to interact with industry.

The xTechSoldier Lethality competition consists of three-rounds:

1 Call for concept white papers;

2 Technology Pitch; and

3 Final Proof-of-Concept Demonstration

So far, we’ve seen round 1 which selected five companies based upon their white paper submissions. Each of these small businesses will receive a cash prize of $15,000 and an invitation to advance to Part 2: Technology Pitches where the teams will showcase their innovative concepts for a Precision Grenadier System (PGS):

American Rheinmetall Munitions, “Squad Support Weapon Achieving Precision Grenadier System Objectives”

FN America, LLC, “PGS-001”

Knight Technical Solutions, LLC, “Multipurpose Intelligent Grenade System ‘MIGS’”

MARS, Inc., “MARS, Inc. 30mm Support Rifle System (SRS)”

Plumb Precision Products, LLC, “P3 M110 Precision Grenade Launcher”

Up to three companies will be selected from the virtual technology pitch round (round 2) and receive an additional $300,000 each in cash prizes and the opportunity to come back in 6 to 18 months to conduct a final proof-of-concept demonstration (round 3).

Those technology pitches are set to begin today, Aug 29, 2023 and last until Sep 1st.

One final winner may be selected and awarded up to $2M in a follow-on contract or agreement. The target for this phase is Mar 1, 2024 – Mar 31, 2025.

SSD readers may be familiar with the Rheinmetall and Plumb Precision Products system which we have covered in the past.
