Wednesday, July 20th, 2016

The winning combination of PROOF Research carbon fiber barrel and Ruger RPR takes 1st place for Wyatt Gibson, at 2016 MGM Ironman competition

Columbia Falls, MT (June 2016) —PROOF Research, makers of match-grade stainless steel barrels, and carbon-fiber composite barrels that deliver extreme accuracy, durability and up to a 50% weight reduction, are now offering barrels for the popular Ruger Precision Rifle (RPR) in two different installation configurations (Pre-Fit and Gunsmith-Friendly).

The new barrels have already been proven in competition with Wyatt Gibson using his to take 1st Place in the 2016 MGM Ironman, finishing 138 points ahead of the next-best shooter. According to Wyatt, “The PROOF Research carbon fiber barrel on my Ruger Precision Rifle made a huge difference in weight while not compromising accuracy. I have nothing but good things to say about it.”

“Pre-Fit” barrels for the RPR are available in steel or carbon fiber, arrive ready for installation without further machining required, and are chambered in a choice of .308 Win, .243 Win, .260 Rem, 6mm Creedmoor and 6.5 Creedmoor.

The un-chambered “Gunsmith-Friendly” version (available in stainless steel only) comes threaded for the RPR action with a 27-inch finish length, scaled-down M24 contour, available in a number of popular calibers, and is ready for a gunsmith to chamber, cut to length, crown, and install.

“Our cut-rifled stainless steel barrels have been proven in one competition after another and our composite barrels offer similar performance with 60% faster cooling and a significant reduction in weight,” stated Jason Lincoln, VP of Engineering and Product Development at PROOF Research. “These new barrel designs make it easy for Ruger Precision Rifle owners to upgrade their platforms, whether they want to reduce weight, tune handling characteristics, or to realize maximum accuracy”.

Griffin Armament Low-Pro RIGID Rail Kits Available

    Sunday, July 17th, 2016

    105

The design objective for the Griffin Low-Pro RIGID rails were to provide a slim, ultralight M-LOK rail, with increased rigidity over current similar market options.

“We had been looking at the market for a while and noticed that there were two types of rails essentially. Rails that were beefy and strong, and rails that were slim and unfortunately weaker. We wanted to combine the desirable attributes of both category products into one optimal rail system.”, Austin stated, Primary owner and Lead engineer for Griffin. He went on, “The final design resulted in 70% more rigidity than current similar market slim rails. This is important for those who need to use IR lasers as armed professionals or for hunting. There are a lot of great options now in IR laser aimer products that have solid mounting and solid bodies and we wanted to make a slim rail that provided industry leading point of aim / point of impact for those aimers.”

Low-Pro RIGID rails feature a 7075 aluminum barrel nut which can be installed with the included Griffin Armorers Wrench. The mounting is done with included shims and flat head cap screws for an ultra-flush and low profile mating to the receiver. 17-4 stainless QD flush cups are included which thread into the barrel nut through holes in the rail.

The kits include the Griffin Primo Gas Block, a 416R stainless .750” ID gas block which can be set screwed in place and / or pinned.

    SURG – A Viewpoint

    Saturday, July 16th, 2016

This is some commentary on USSOCOM’s Special Upper Receiver Group requirement sent to me by someone I know in the small arms development world. He wishes to remain anonymous and I will respect that request.

    Dear Readers;

First off, the guys who wrote the Navy patent are really smart and have insider knowledge of what is really going on in combat, I know them personally. SURG is a suppressed weapon with the same length as an M-4, with all the commercial improvements you could want, and which is very hard to detect with thermal or IR imagers. You would have to try and burn yourself and it has secondary flash reduction built in. Everyone who wants to be visible by a $200 thermal camera from farther away than he can shoot back just go on and complain all you want. We are no longer talking about screwing a muzzle can on a 10” barrel and hoping for the best…if you need to go back to war, or even go the first time, ask for one. When it is 1,000 degrees inside the forend, it is just ambient on the Carbon fiber and “No” I am not saying how that works since we all love speculation…it confuses the Enemy.

In Mogadishu the sound of our guns brought thousands of opponents, in Afghanistan they remove IR filters from cheap video cameras and spot IR flashlights miles away…now they have cell phone thermal imagers and can see a fired weapon even without a muzzle flash.

Love the chatter, but let’s build up some facts first…that is one of the SURG candidates, and you don’t want one? Really? Because I don’t believe you…

Gotta start thinking and get planning for the next war, not the last one, Guys.

    Warrior East Preview – WeaponLogic

    Wednesday, July 13th, 2016

At this week’s Warrior East you’ll get a chance to check out WeaponLogic, a weapon shot counter and wireless inventory control system. It was created in response to a long-standing government interest in a means to measure weapon usage for maintenance purposes. The idea is to collect highly accurate weapon usage data and manage the weapon’s maintenance via software.

Specifically, it fulfills the characteristics put forth in a Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane RFI for a Cartridge Shot Counter:

CSC is a system of components that detect and record shots fired, cadence of fire, and possible other maintenance specific data for family of weapons (pistols, carbines, rifles, machine guns, and precision rifles). The CSC will read all passive tag identification on barrels and various ancillary attachments (Scopes, Lasers, and Flashlights Etc…). The capability is sought for all family of weapons configurations.

Data Collection Device (DCD). A Data Collection Device (DCD) will be used to read the Item Unique Identification (IUID) of the weapon and ancillary attachments, store and transmit this information to the CSC (located on the weapon). It will also read and the record shots fired, cadence of fire, and possible other weapon history details such as barrel temperature. The DCD will also transfer data while sitting in and charging in the DCD cradle connected via USB 3 (compatible to USB 2.0) to the Weapon Enhanced Arms Repair (WEAR) maintenance software loaded on a NMCI Standard seat and/or a SOCOM Standard.

As you can see below, WeaponLogic consists of a Weapon Hub Data Collection Device which fits into a weapon’s pistol grip and an Weapon Identification Maintenance System which includes an Scanner and ID system to wirelessly import information from the DCD into the computer.

An added bonus is that the RF-based tagging system allows the simple inventory, of even a roomful of weapons. This facilitates new storage options for home station as well as while deployed.

Be sure to check it out at Warrior East, this Thursday and Friday.
