KE Arms SHTF+ Wrap: Stop Heat TransFer

June 4th, 2021

The SHTF (Stop Heat Transfer) Wrap is a new option from KE Arms for hot weather, rapid-fire, and other incalescent shooting conditions, particularly with free float tubes. Manufactured in the USA and designed in conjunction with Russell Phagan, the SHTF+ Wrap reduces heat transfer to a shooter’s hand and reduces wear from barricades in training or competition.

Grunts: incalescent

KE Arms describes the Wrap thusly:

Storage in hot environments and rapid fire are both equally capable of making the free float tubes too hot to hold comfortably, reducing the shooter’s effectiveness. The Stop Heat TransFer Wrap attaches around the 9” to 15” aluminum free float tube on your AR15 rifle to reduce heat transfer to the shooters hand. The rifle can be handled normally after storage inside a hot vehicle and during rapid firing of multiple magazines.

The SHTF+ features thermal insulating material for even more extreme use (not recommended for use on silencers/suppressor directly). Reduce wear bracing on barricades in training or matches. Our customers in cold weather climates equally enjoy the SHTF wrap to stop cold transfer into their hands. The SHTF+ is 7? Long and can adjust to fit a wide variety of handguards.

It secures via hook and loop fastening (Velcro) to fit any handguard diameter. In addition to AR15 handguards, it will also work on FAL, Sterling, M1 Garand/M14 Fore ends, and potentially any other firearm with thin handguards needing additional insulation.

The SHTF+ Wrap and other accessories are available online at KEArms.com (@ke_arms).

5th SOS Tests New Aircrew Protective Mask for C-130 Enterprise

June 4th, 2021

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. — The 5th Special Operations Squadron demonstrated the unique capabilities of the unit while testing a new protective mask for the 53rd Wing.

The squadron tested the Joint Service Aircrew Mask for Strategic Aircraft, which is slated to replace the current Aircrew Eye and Respiratory Protection System equipment. The equipment protects aircrew against Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear threats in the air.

The 28th Test and Evaluation Squadron, which falls under the 53rd WG at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, is responsible for testing new equipment in electronic warfare, armaments and avionics, chemical defense, reconnaissance, and aircrew training devices. They selected the 5th SOS to assist in testing the mask.

“The 5th SOS is perfect for the test because we’re all instructors and evaluators with thousands of flight and combat hours,” said Maj. Justin Eulberg, 5th SOS AC-130J Ghostrider evaluator and pilot. “It was very natural for the 5th to take on that role and apply our experience to the ergonomics of this equipment.”

Eulberg was one of the pilots flying during the JSAM SA tests.

The 28th TES needed a dynamic environment with many moving components to test the practicality of the new system. The 5th SOS operates AC-130J Ghostriders, which offer a diverse culmination of specialties all happening within a limited space, creating the ideal testing environment for the new system.

“We’ll have gunners in the back moving around loading ammo, sensor operators talking over radios and pilots flying, so the work load is heavier [than a standard airframe,]” said Eulberg. “In their own terms, [the 28th TES] wanted to test it on one of the most difficult airframes last.”

JSAM SAs are more comfortable and designed to include a helmet and hood in the event of a CBRNE threat, according to aircrew who conducted the assessment. The dual helmet-mask design is also capable of supporting communications equipment, doesn’t fog up as easily as the AERPS and doesn’t require a second blower to provide oxygen.

“I’m 100 percent for this new system, I think it could potentially save lives downrange” said Master Sgt. Justin Spurling, 28th TES aircrew flight equipment manager. “The updated technology will keep our aircrew safe in a CBRNE environment and is much easier to maintain.”

Spurling assessed and routed the results of the test to Air Combat Command for further evaluation.

The 5th SOS was the last squadron to test the JSAM SA before C-130 platforms across the U.S. Air Force could field the system. The tests yielded positive results, rating higher than the AERPS in a range of topics from hypoxia prevention to ease of respiration.

“We have our fingers in a lot of different pies, not just training at the school house,” said Eulberg. “We also conduct tests and augment our active duty counterparts. Our participation in the test changed the future of how we protect aircrew against CBRNE threats.”

The tests lasted eight days and required aircrew to evaluate the effectiveness of the mask in a variety of scenarios.

“These tests play an important role in the larger modernization of the Air Force,” said Spurling.

Reserve instructors and evaluators have conducted similar tests in the past on new equipment and processes that fall under United States Special Operations Command priorities such as crew workload tests.

“The 5th SOS is in a unique position because of how diverse the expertise is within the squadron,” said Eulberg. “We offer a unique melting pot of experience, there’s just not another squadron like it in the Gunship community.”

AEC Skyline and Milrem Robotics Join Forces

June 3rd, 2021

Dutch defence company AEC Skyline and Europe’s leading robotics and autonomous systems developer Milrem Robotics signed a Memorandum of Understanding last week to cooperate in the development of unmanned systems.

The MoU that was signed by Stef Have, director of AEC Skyline Holding and Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics paves the way for joint development, testing and validation of products and software in the fields of activity of both parties.

Under the teaming agreement AEC Skyline will act as an integration partner of Milrem Robotics products including the THeMIS and Multiscope unmanned ground vehicles as well as the Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle. AEC will also engage with the Dutch Ministry of Defence as well as with potential civilian customers, primarily in the Netherlands.

With six THeMIS UGVs already being operated by the Royal Netherlands Army’s Robotics & Autonomous Systems unit under a concept development & experimentation (CD&E) scheme, both parties now aim to position Milrem Robotics’ solutions for future requirements of the Dutch MoD including the use of manned-unmanned teaming.

The parties are looking into requirements that might lead to the integration of new technologies and payloads including (tethered) UAS, sensors and armaments into UGVs. The companies are also analysing how UAS data can enhance AI and autonomous navigation solutions developed by Milrem Robotics and enhance their Intelligent Functions.

“AEC’s tethered drone technology is a welcome addition to the list of capabilities required in the development of the European Unmanned Ground System during the iMUGS project, which is why Milrem has invited AEC to contribute with their technology,” said Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics.

AEC Skyline’s director Stef Have added: “we look forward to contributing to Milrem Robotics’ range of products, adding significant systems integration expertise to the partnership while engaging with the end-user, both military and civilian.”

The companies have already identified counter-UAS technology and the development of a new integrated user interface as specific areas of cooperation.

TNVC Inc Limited NGI Outdoor Systems Release

June 3rd, 2021

TNVC’s releasing an “extremely limited” product from NG Systems: the OSSABAW DTNVG14P Dual Tube Night Vision Goggle (NVG).

TNVC-NG-Outdoor=Systems

Based on TNVC’s flagship YOTE MN14P Monocular, the OSSABAW DTNVG14P is designed specifically to meet the needs of outdoor adventure enthusiasts, hunters, nighttime photographers, naturalists, noctivigants, and other recreational night vision users.

The OSSABAW DTNVG14P uses a Photonis ECHO Gen 2+ image intensifier tube, which makes it the perfect dual-tube solution for the outdoor enthusiast community. Get them while you’re in stock! These will not be available on backorder, units are ready to ship.

Grunts: noctivigant

Like the YOTE Monocular, the OSSABAW is a high-performance Night Vision Goggle (NVG) that can be used hand-held or head-mounted. Unlike the YOTE Monocular, however, the OSSABAW is a Dual-Tube NVG, meaning that it uses two (2) image intensifier tubes, to provide each eye with an aided image that improves depth perception and image quality by allowing the user to take advantage of true stereoscopic vision. This also makes it ideal for driving and maritime applications where depth perception, situational awareness, and reaction time are of critical importance.

The OSSABAW DTNVG14P uses the same ubiquitous AN/PVS-14 optical lens assemblies originally designed for military use and features Photonis ECHO “ONYX” White Phosphor Hybrid Photocathode image intensifiers uniquely suited to the needs of recreational night vision users. The Binocular housing is likewise based on a proven architecture with a highly durable polymer housing manufactured by ACTinBlack of Luxembourg and an international leader in high-performance optical systems. The DTNVG14P housing features independently articulating optical pods that allow the device to be adjusted for individual user’s eyes, as well as a monocular cut-off for stowing the system when the optical pods are rotated all the way out, providing extra security during storage or when being stowed when worn head-mounted. The DTNVG14P housing also features an industry-standard “dovetail” interface shoe allowing it to work with common head harness and helmet mounts such as the Wilcox G24 NVG Mount.

*Tube Specs:

Tube: Photonis ECHO High Performance Gen 2
Color: P45 White Phosphor (ONYX)
Gate: Auto-Gated
Figure of Merit (FOM): 1800+ (No Max)
