USSOCOM Seeks Personal Defense Weapon

March 10th, 2017

In a request for information released yesterday to industry, United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) seeks to identify potential sources within the national technology and industrial base with the ability to provide a conversion kit for the M4A1 to create a Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) system:

-Complete Kit to include upper receiver and butt stock kit
-Any tools required to complete an operational conversion
-A light and sound reducing suppressor that can be attached to the system when needed

PDW Kit specifics: The kit must be adaptable to the standard M4A1 lower receiver, any modification to the lower receiver must be reversible and nonpermanent. The kit must be in .300 Blackout (BLK) cartridge, total system weight, including the M4A1 lower in not to exceed 5.5lbs. Length with stock extended not to extend 26″ length with stock collapsed or folded shall be 17″ (T), 15″ (O) and a height not to exceed 7.5″. Weapon shall be fully functional when collapsed or folded. Kit should include a 5.56mm barrel that can be changed from .300 BLK to 5.56mm in less than 3 minutes. Accuracy shall be 3.0 MOA (T), 2.0 MOA (O) @100 yds. and 5.0 MOA (T), 3.0 MOA (O) @ 300 yds. both in .300 BLK supersonic.

While there are numerous solutions on the market, based on the mention of a folding stock, it sounds like someone is interested in the SIG SAUER MCX kit.

Whiskey 5: NLB Tactical

March 10th, 2017

Whiskey 5 is a recurring Soldier Systems Daily feature that asks “Who, What, Where, When, and Why” of industry leaders, manufacturers and instructors — to let you hear how they describe themselves. It’s intended to give you a close and thorough look at some of the people that make our industry unique. We’ve found these basic 5 questions to be the basic keys to understanding. Past Whiskey-5s have included business from Provengo to Kryptek, and all sorts of other companies in between.

Today we’ll be sharing an overview of Virginia Beach’s, NLB Tactical formerly No Lie Blades.

WHO
NLB Tactical is a training company located in Virginia Beach, operating MTU’s in the United States and Europe. It is run by Hank Hayes, a veteran close protection specialist, senior Mil-L/E combative instructor and the inventor of the No Lie Blades feedback training knife. Hayes’ experience alone would make NLB worth looking into, but NLB’s instructor staff makes it that much more (the go to solution) enticing. NLB is made up of literally 100’s of years of superior tactical and field combat skills with over 51 instructors world-wide with instructors in the United Kingdom, Canada and Germany with the bulk of the MIL-L/E instructors on the east coast and mid-west states. NLB, also formerly known as No Lie Blades, manufactures various feedback training knives and offers a host of unique courses available on the United States government GSA products and services schedules. Additionally, NLB has more letters of recommendation on government letterhead than its 5 industry competitors combined.

WHAT
NLB is one of the best solutions for edged weapons combat simply because they provide an immediate feedback tool that no other US government training provider offers. From the first days of NLB it was clear they were onto something with their very direct, straight-forward, and highly effective fighting system. Its methodology is rooted in violence of action, shutting down threats and uses HVT (High Value Target) striking, pinching, biting, gouging, ripping and tearing to name a few of the neutralization tactics.

Operators have found that with these proven methods that work for dealing with an edged weapon threat those exact same tactics and methods will work for dealing with blunt or impact weapons and also in dealing with empty hand subjects. Departments and agencies saw that NLB could handle several of their needs and started asking for more training from us. Currently NLB offers combat solutions in the follow areas.
Edged Weapons Tactical Training
Impact Weapons Training
Instinctive Reactive Firearms Training
Dynamic Transitional Fighting from Weapons to Empty Hand, etc.
Active Shooter Response Training

NLB’s transitional fighting course is something virtually no other organization provides. This is where the student transitions from one weapons system or empty hand to another weapons system up and down the force continuum. The root of the NLB system translates directly to impact weapons, empty hands fighting and direct access to firearms weapons over the shoulder or on the belt line.

WHEN
The NLB company story is an interesting one. Like most inventions they are either made from frustration, necessity, mistakes or creativity. NLB’s was a little bit of everything. After an edged weapons training session with some instructors from Quantico in 1997 and a large dose of frustration Mr. Hayes felt the strong need for a training knife that could provide immediate feedback just like a simunitions training ammo round. He needed evidence to show what was working and what wasn’t. Many claimed that their techniques worked when they clearly didn’t, but proving this was a challenge short of an actual knife encounter.

Later he started doodling on a napkin and after a few months and lot of help he had a prototype marking training knife. So as you often hear the rest was history. In 1998 NLB was open for business and within a year the US government approached to purchase the product which is how NLB became a US government contractor. About 2 years after that NLB received another call from the government stating they had a problem. They said the tool does exactly what it says it’s going to do and that their men have found their fighting programs had major holes now that the training knife revealed all their tactical knife fighting flaws. They wanted to know if we had a training program, they needed help. It was in those moments the training side of our company was born.

WHERE
NLB Tactical is based in Virginia Beach, Va minutes from Dam Neck Military Base, Naval Air Station Oceana and close to the other 25 Military bases in Virginia Beach and neighboring states. NLB operates as an MTU (Mobile Training Unit) or MTT (Mobile Training Team) dispatch team. Although NLB administrative offices are located in Virginia Beach and have small teams and senior instructors ready to be active as needed for any training operation in the US, Canada and Europe.

WHY
There is an overarching reason and 3 key things to point out. The main reason why is that the Military and especially the Law Enforcement communities make it so hard to get good, solid training. The standards are often set so low to meet the skills of some complaining pansy who went and got the minimum skills requirements lowered even more. When US lives are being lost at the rates that they are and with easily 50% of those deaths avoidable with proper skills adjustments, something MUST BE DONE! NLB takes on that responsibility to do something about those skills that are needed.

The components that make NLB a must hire solution are 3 key things. First is the marking feedback training knife. NLB is the inventor of the marking blades technology and are so far in front of others when it comes to training with this immediate feedback it makes them the most knowledgeable and the leaders in the knife fighting arena. It has been said that NLB would have to be really stupid to profess they have a tactical edged weapons solution without it being outstanding as the marking blade reveals everything with each mark representing injury/blood loss.

Second, NLB is world known for being very direct, straight-forward and highly effective. It’s methodology is rooted in violence of action, shutting down threats and uses HVT (High Value Target) striking, pinching, biting, gouging, ripping and tearing to name a few of the neutralization tactics.

Thirdly, NLB ownership is highly focused on serving departments, agencies and commands with the absolute best people and service in the industry. Mr. Hayes has been said to be fanatical about the people that come on board with NLB and demands their best. Mr. Hayes says the A game is the only game accepted.

Marines Issue Mission Enhancement Kits For Mossberg 500A2 Shotguns

March 9th, 2017

In this article on www.marcorsyscom.marines.mil, entitled, “Marines make an entrance with new breaching capabilities” By Ashley Calingo, Office of Public Affairs and Communications, Marine Corps Systems Command, she discusses the newly acquired Mission Enhancement Kits for the Corps’ Mossberg 500A2 Shotguns. The MEK consists of a shorter breaching barrel and optionsl stock configurations.

The first contract for these kits was awarded to Pro Patria by USSOCOM back in 2009. Since then, Pro Patria has provided kits to the US Army, US Navy and US Marine Corps.

Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. —
To Marines on a breaching mission, the shotgun is more than just a weapon. It is a tool Marines use to breach—or gain entry into—an enemy-held building using the minimal amount of force. Marine Corps Systems Command’s Military Enhancement Kit gives Marines the tactical advantage by transforming current shotguns into a more compact and versatile weapon.

Sgt. Trenton Hansen, a Special Reaction Team member from the Marine Corps Base Quantico Provost Marshals Office, uses a Military Enhancement Kit to breach open a door. The MEK provides versatile capabilities to Marine units trained to engage on breaching missions. The kit builds upon the Mossberg M500A2, but gives Marines a shorter, vented breaching barrel and three interchangeable buttstock attachments, including the collapsible buttstock featured in this photo. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Alan Matthews)

The MEK is a ballistic breaching tool—or what Marines use to safely shoot the locks off of doors. It is designed to augment the M500A2 pump-action shotguns currently used by Marine reconnaissance, security forces, military police, explosive ordnance disposal and special operations units. The kit gives Marines a shorter, vented breaching barrel and three interchangeable buttstock attachments: a pistol grip, fixed buttstock and a collapsible buttstock. At 18 inches long, the MEK’s barrel is nearly three inches shorter than the M500A2’s standard barrel, making it less cumbersome for Marines to carry.

“When you’re breaching or conducting methods of entry, having the ability to secure the weapon on your body without it becoming cumbersome is important,” said Gunnery Sgt. Michael Flor, ballistic breaching course chief and senior instructor at the Methods of Entry School, the Marine Corps center of excellence for breaching. “Having a shorter barrel and a pistol grip removes all of the extra space that is not necessary for ballistic breaching. So when you stow it, you can stow it much more rapidly.”

Current shotguns can be modified by Marine Corps armorers with a special adaptor from the MEK that allows Marines to easily interchange the buttstocks in a matter of seconds without the need for additional tools.

“Having the ability to transition through the three stocks—the folding, the pistol grip and the fixed—makes the weapons more versatile,” Flor said. “The kit allows the weapon to be tailored to the tactical user at the user level.”

The shorter breaching barrel and different stock grips, namely the pistol grip, offer several tactical advantages, Flor said.

“For instance, if reconnaissance Marines repel from a helicopter carrying a long weapon system that’s unsecured, it can catch on parts of the air frame or the rope and become a safety hazard,” Flor said. “Having a shorter weapon system, secured tightly, is more manageable. That’s an advantage.”

The MEK also yields significant savings for the Marine Corps—another advantage.

“By using the MEK with currently-fielded M500A2 shotguns, the Marine Corps only had to buy the kits,” said Maj. Paul Gillikin, Special Purpose Weapons team lead in MCSC’s Infantry Weapons Systems. “Also, modifying the shotgun in local armories will save time and shipping costs, and units will retain their shotguns on-hand, as opposed to sending them in to a depot for maintenance.”

As part of IWS’s evaluation process, Gillikin and his team turned the kit over to Marines at the Methods of Entry School, located aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico. MOES instructors teach breaching methodology to Marines assigned to Reconnaissance and Force Reconnaissance units, Security Forces Regiment Recapture Tactics teams, Military Police Special Reaction teams, Explosive Ordnance Disposal units and Marine Special Operations Command units. Marines who undergo training at MOES will be the primary users of the kit.

“We reached out early to MOES, and the feedback we received from experts like Gunnery Sgt. Flor and Master Sgt. Bryan Maass was key to helping us get the MEK to Marines,” said Gillikin. “They were able to articulate a capability and requirement, and assist us in test design and execution. Infantry Weapons Systems-South logistics personnel took it the rest of the way by completing the cataloging process, which will allow units to sustain the kit through normal supply requisitioning.”

The MEK is currently being fielded to select units across the Marine Corps, and is one of the many capabilities offered to Marines by MCSC’s Infantry Weapons Systems. IWS strives to ensure that Marines are equipped and ready for their next challenge, whether that means introducing new weapons systems or, in the case of the MEK, enhancing current ones.
