Kestrel wide-area sensor makes first-time showing at IDEX

February 16th, 2017

FAIRFAX, Va.— Feb. 6, 2017— Logos Technologies will be showcasing the upgraded, exportable Kestrel Block II wide-area motion imagery (WAMI) sensor at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX).

Designed for defense, public safety and humanitarian assistance missions, the Block II shares all the same capabilities as the original Kestrel system, which has been deployed with U.S. forces since 2011.

Each sensor, when mounted on an aerostat, creates a 440 Mpx mosaic image and can monitor an entire city-sized area at once, day and night, for weeks at a time. In addition, each WAMI system detects and simultaneously tracks all significant movers in real time, while also recording events for later forensic analysis.

Kestrel Block II mounted on an aerostat
“The key upgrade in Kestrel Block II,” says John Marion, president of Logos Technologies, “is that we have improved the operational reliability, while significantly reducing the weight, from 150 pounds [68 kg] to less than 85 [40 kg].”

This lighter weight allows the Block II to be paired up with a wider range of aerostats, sensors and communications equipment.

Someone Trademarked The Term “Morale Patch”-Help Stop Them

February 16th, 2017

Yesterday, Morale Patch Armory announced they had received a trademark for the term “Morale Patch” and immediately set about having morale patch collector groups shut down on social media. Obviously, the term existed long before these guys came along. I’m all for respecting IP, but if you didn’t create it, you shouldn’t claim it.

Consequently, some folks have banded together to appeal the trademark issue to the USPTO. Naturally, this will take lawyers, and lawyers take cash. They’ve started a gofundme page and raised over $8000 in the first hour. Consider, throwing a few bucks in, in order to stand up to this outrageous act, designed to curtail innovation and trade.

T:Worx – I-Rail

February 15th, 2017

SPC Joshua Harris, A CO/1-29 Infantry is firing a carbine outfitted with the latest version of the Intelligent Rail or I-Rail, developed by T:Worx, a subsidiary of Prototype Productions.

It is a Picatinny standard, Weapon Accessory Power and Data Rail. Below, you can see an older variant. There is a short cable that runs across the lower receiver to the grip which attaches further to the batteries contained in the collapsible butt stock.

In addition to providing power to weapon accessories, I-Rail is capable of connecting those accessories to the network through the Nett Warrior end user device and Soldier radio.

I-Rail is one of the technologies undergoing evaluation by US and British Army Soldiers during the 2017 Advanced Expeditionary Warfighting Experiment at Ft Benning, GA.

Here is Cpl Craig Gordon, 1st Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment (The Vikings), moving across a linear danger area during Pilot Mission 1. As you can see, T:Worx has adapted the design to more incorporate more modern features. Gone are the permanent Pic rails at the 3,6,9 and 12 positions.

Heads-Ups Navigation, Tracking and Reporting System

February 15th, 2017

The Heads-Ups Navigation, Tracking and Reporting (HUNTR) system, developed by the Night Vision & Electronic Sensors Directorate at CERDEC, is a capability designed to improve situational awareness. HUNTR displays icons and graphics that are visible within the user’s field of view and on the Soldier’s NETT Warrior end user device by using a see-through heads-up display. During hours of limited visibility, HUNTR also displays graphics and icons on the Soldier’s Enhanced Night Vision Goggle II (AN/PSQ-20A).

Here, we see 1LT Obinna Opara, Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment (EXFOR) during the Advanced Expeditionary Warfighting Experiment 2017 Collective Practice at Fort Benning, GA. HUNTR’s rail is obviously inspired by the Ops-Core ARC rail but NVESD has incorporated a camera into the device.

This photo of LT Jonathon Taylor of the British Army’s, 1st Bn, Royal Anglian Regt, briefing BG Mark Odom of the CDLC, ARCIC on HUNTR shows another angle of the system. The rail system currently incorporates an umbilical cable.

Crickett Precision Rifle

February 15th, 2017

The Crickett Precision Rifle is absolutely the coolest thing I saw at last week’s Great American Outdoor Show. The Crickett Precision Rifle is a great scaled down, little brother to an AI chassis precision rifle.

PRS recently began a youth program called PRS Kidz and still others are organizing Rimfire Practical Rifle events. You’ll want one for your son or daughter and you’ll want one for yourself. I’ll give you all of the stats but you’ll want to buy it for one reason alone; its looks. The price isn’t bad either.
