February 27th, 2017

With quick release and backup night sights, the MEPRO MicroRDS is designed for pistols, rifles, and shotguns

The Company expands operations in the European civilian market with introduction of:
MEPRO MicroRDS Red Dot Pistol Sight, MEPRO RDS Red Dot Rifle Sight, and MEPRO FT BULLSEYE Self-Illuminated Pistol Sight

IWA 2017, Nuremberg, Germany, March 3-6, at the Prima Armi booth, #7A-512
February 27, 2017. Meprolight Ltd. – a leading manufacturer of electro-optical systems, thermal and night vision equipment, Self-Illuminated sights, and Laser Range Finder systems for military, law enforcement and civil applications – launches a unique red dot micro sight with quick release and backup night sights. The MEPRO MicroRDS is designed for pistols, rifles, and shotguns. The Company is expanding its operations in the European civilian market with its MEPRO MicroRDS, MEPRO RDS Red Dot Sight, and MEPRO FT BULLSEYE self-illuminated pistol sight.

According to Benny Kokia, VP Marketing & Sales, “We are pleased to expand our operations in the European shooting enthusiasts market, and to take this opportunity to introduce our new product, which is the only one of its kind in the world – the MEPRO MicroRDS. Whether on pistols or rifles, the sight delivers a Red Dot solution that enables quick and accurate shooting.”

The MEPRO MicroRDS – the latest addition to the MEPRO RDS family – is small, rugged, and energy efficient, with a clear aiming point for all light conditions, and a large display window. For pistols, it serves as the main aiming sight, offering fast target acquisition at close distances. It fits a large variety of handguns thanks to its patented quick release mounting (MEPRO MicroRDS adaptor). The adaptor allows the use of an optical sight alongside a backup tritium sight. There is no need to replace the gun’s slide or to drill holes to install the optical sight. For rifles, it serves as a backup sight for close distances, while the main sight covers medium and long distances.

Kokia continued, “The European civilian market is an important market for us. During the first stage, we’ll market a limited number of products, but the goal is to expand and to offer European customers all of our product lines. As an established market in the area of hunting and civilian shooting – we are convinced that shooting enthusiasts will appreciate the benefits of our products, which offer high quality at competitive prices.”

The company is expanding its operations in the European market with the MEPRO RDS electro-optical red dot sight and MEPRO FT BULLSEYE.

The MEPRO RDS is an energy-efficient, compact, and rugged sight that provides thousands of operating hours while utilizing a single “AA” commercial battery. With its large display window and clearly-defined red dot, the MEPRO RDS ensures rapid target acquisition with both eyes open. Offering numerous easily switchable reticle brightness intensities, the MEPRO RDS fits every hunting scenario, and is compatible with GEN II and GEN III NVGs as well as magnifying scopes. The MEPRO RDS is a civilian of the Mil Spec MEPRO M5, used by the Israel Defense Forces.

The MEPRO FT BULLSEYE is an extremely small, low profile, optical pistol sight. Similar to reflex sights, it provides the shooter with an aim point in the form of an illuminated dot and circle bullseye, enabling intuitive and fast target acquisition. The MEPRO FT BULLSEYE allows instant and accurate shooting in all lighting conditions with no batteries needed. The sight – which fits most existing holsters – needs no front sight and can be easily installed on an existing pistol dovetail.

Braeön Offers DIY Repairs On Demand

February 27th, 2017

Recently launched as a Kickstarter campaign, Braeön touts itself as the “World’s Strongest and Most Adaptable Material.”

A lighter and more versatile alternative to rope, Braeön allows you to create custom grips, handles, and harnesses in seconds. In fact, one example they offer is the creation of a custom knife handle.

It appears easy to use. You expose the narrow tape material to hot air or liquid (140 deg F or more), then work it into place, bonding it together as you go, then let it set, for just a few seconds.

Bullet-Proof Origami Shield

February 27th, 2017

Mechanical engineers at Brigham Young University created a man-portable and lightweight bulletproof shield that was inspired by origami. The shield is flat when stowed, but quickly folds up to an encompasing shield made of 12 layers of Kevlar fabric.

In testing the barrier was capable of stopping loads upwards of .44 Magnum, making it roughly equivalent to Level IIIA body armor in protective capability.

While there’s likely still some development to undergo before this becomes a fully-realized product, it shows great promise, especially if the positive response from the Law Enforcement agents testing the device is anything to go by.

The SOF Truths

February 27th, 2017

The Special Operations Forces Truths have been around for so long that they are taken for granted. The thing is, you can apply them to any low denisty, high demand capability. I thought we should kick off this Monday morning by revisiting them since the US Army has not only deactivated its Long Range Surveillance capability but it’s Pathfinder Companies as well. Once they’re gone, it’s difficult to bring them back.

Humans are more important than hardware

People – not equipment – make the critical difference. The right people, highly trained and working as a team, will accomplish the mission with the equipment available. On the other hand, the best equipment in the world cannot compensate for a lack of the right people.

Quality is better than quantity

A small number of people, carefully selected, well trained, and well led, are preferable to larger numbers of troops, some of whom may not be up to the task.

Special Operations Forces cannot be mass produced

It takes years to train operational units to the level of proficiency needed to accomplish difficult and specialized SOF missions. Intense training – both in SOF schools and units – is required to integrate competent individuals into fully capable units. This process cannot be hastened without degrading ultimate capability.

Competent Special Operations Forces cannot be created after emergencies occur

Creation of competent, fully mission capable units takes time. Employment of fully capable special operations capability on short notice requires highly trained and constantly available SOF units in peacetime.

Most special operations require non-SOF assistance

The operational effectiveness of our deployed forces cannot be, and never has been, achieved without being enabled by our joint service partners. The support Air Force, Army, Marine and Navy engineers, technicians, intelligence analysts, and the numerous other professions that contribute to SOF, have substantially increased our capabilities and effectiveness throughout the world.

This Day In AFSOC History

February 26th, 2017

IMG_9900

On this Day in 1991: The AC-130A Spectre “Azrael” was sent to the Al Jahra highway between Kuwait City and Basrah, Iraq, to intercept the convoys of tanks, trucks, buses and cars fleeing the battle. Facing numerous enemy batteries of SA-6 and SA-8 surface-to-air missiles, and 37mm and 57mm radar-guided anti-aircraft artillery, the crew attacked the enemy skillfully, inflicting significant damage on the convoys.
