US Made Mountain Serapes Now Available from HPG

August 16th, 2012

Hill People Gear has announced that they are bringing Mountain Serapes back regularly and these latest deliveries are made in USA! The Mountain Serape is a fantastic 3-season multi-purpose garment/sleep system.

Hill People Gear told us how these are different from previous models:
-Made in the US out of US materials (which required the price increase)
-Based on feedback from Joe when he was using one on a helicopter in Afghanistan, we added a hook on the drawcord so you can go into greatcoat mode without using the zipper if you want to
-The material is a little beefier, resulting in a finished weight of 2.5 lbs
-The zipper pull on the main zipper is an “over the top” so it can be manipulated from either inside or outside of the Serape
-Insulated with Primaloft insulation quilted to the inner shell only. This makes the piece a little bit warmer and more weather resistant

They are available in Ranger Green and MultiCam with a Ranger Green liner.

Rick Elder Moving to 5.11 Tactical as VP of SOF Products

August 16th, 2012

It seems like just the other day that Rick Elder had left Government service supporting USSOCOM at Natick and had accepted a position as Executive Director Smith Optics Elite Division. He’s done one hell of a job during his time at Smith. Maybe that’s why the past two years seems like just yesterday. Time sure flies when you’re having fun. But, today is a new day, and Smith Optics announces that Rick is leaving and 5.11 Tactical announces that in October, he will join them as Vice President of Special Operations Forces Products.

The move is extremely amicable and Rick won’t be leaving Smith immediately. He’s going to stick around for two months to help in finding his replacement, as well as spending additional time in ensuring a smooth transition.

Rick Elder provided SSD with the following statement, “I have greatly enjoyed my time at Smith Optics, working with a fantastic team that over the last two years helped propel this division into one of the top tier ballistic eyewear providers in the world. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that Smith provided me and proud of all that we have accomplished.”

Regarding the new opportunity with 5.11 Tactical, “I am excited to join the 5.11 Tactical leadership team in October. While I cannot yet share the specifics of 5.11’s plans to serve the Special Operations communities, I look forward to telling you more about the company’s plan for 2013 before the end of this year.”

First off, congrats to Rick, who I’ve known for many years, on his new position. Second, congrats to 5.11 Tactical for landing Rick. He’s a very talented guy. Finally, think about 5.11 starting a division to concentrate on SOF Products. This announcement has so many implications and we can’t wait to see where this will take them.

HSP Announces Disruptive Environments Problem Solver Program

August 16th, 2012

Haley Strategic has announced the launch of the Company’s Disruptive Environments Problem Solver program.

After the successful conclusion of the Disruptive Environment Problem Solver Mountain class, set in the Rocky Mountains the west slopes of Colorado, Haley Strategic will be offering a series of courses including survival, tracking, wilderness medicine and self rescue in environments ranging from wilderness to desert to mountain in summer, fall and winter.

Haley Strategic is pleased to introduce instructors Joe Scott, Steve Collins and Todd Rector; military and law enforcement professionals with extensive experience in combat tracking, sniping, search and rescue and wilderness survival. This team has worked with HSP since the company opened its doors in 2011 co-developing this program. A program that is about being proactive, focusing on self-reliance, rather than waiting for help. Starting with shelter and fire starting, the program includes sustainment tools including land navigation, water collection and purification, tracking and trapping.

Haley said, “When we opened shop at Haley Strategic, 2 years ago, we knew that our new training program would have to excel beyond what had been built in the past 4 years. Off the flat range into a 360º world where pressing a trigger wasn’t the solution…thinking was.

I’ve been fortunate to build a team with incredible people who not only push each other to reach for something better, but can complement each other to make that growth possible in ways that were not possible before.

The diversity and depth of the Disruptive Environments program is a direct result of that collaboration. We’re helping people become their own problem solvers, giving them tools and letting them find what works for them through practical application. ”

The Disruptive Environments program is designed to take people with a base set of skills and put them into controlled, real world situations where they can apply these skills to troubleshoot and problem solve their way to a successful resolution. With programs customized for users ranging from responsible citizens to special operations forces, the Disruptive Environments program is a true classroom for those looking to climb the next rung of the ladder of excellence.

This is very cool, very exciting news. I’ve spoken highly of HSP’s Disruptive Environments courses that not only impart skills but also offer scenarios to apply the training in realistic scenarios. I’ve also attended the Disruptive Industries program and found the method is both sound and effective. Additionally, as a lifelong outdoorsman, I love outdoor training courses, particularly those that concentrate on survival skills. I can’t wait to learn more.
