Daniel Winkler Folding Flint Striker Set

July 9th, 2012

I didn’t realize until The Blade Show that Master Bladesmith Daniel Winkler produced a fire starter set. Called the Folding Flint Striker Set, it’s based on the items carried by frontiersmen before the advent of the match. Winkler is well known for his fascination with early American history. In fact, he began making knives in order to outfit himself in the same equipment as an 18th century woodsman.

Set includes Knife, flint, char tin with char cloth, tinder with fat wood and a draw-string deer hide pouch. Additionally, he can provide a neck pouch for the knife at an additional charge. Just like all of Winkler’s other products knife pouches are hand built, to last.

Starting fires in a traditional manner is a skill that should be acquired and practiced. If I could only get one thing for my birthday, this would be it.

Check Out the New Talon Baton from ASP at Warrior Expo East

July 8th, 2012

ASP is well known in the law enforcement community for their expandable batons and handcuffs. Recently, they released the new Talon baton. Referred to as Disc Loc during development, the new Talon uses two opposing discs that cam into an internal groove machined into each tube. According to ASP, lockout is simple, stable and secure. It features a padded grip and can be opened by grasping the tip or a simple flick of the baton up or down. And, retraction is as simple as pushing a button.

Be sure to see this and other ASP products this week at Warrior Expo East in Virginia Beach, Virginia. ASP products are available for agency and unit orders through ADS Inc.

New Host for “Dual Survival”?

July 8th, 2012

It’s well known in the prepper community that the Discovery Channel series hit a pregnant pause as the show looked for a replacement for Dave Canterbury. Old pro Cody Lundin has remained with the show but folks have been scratching their heads wondering who the new co-star would be. Well, we think we have it figured out.

We believe that the new co-host for season three of Discovery Channel’s “Dual Survival” is Joe Teti who is a Veteran of the US Marines, Army Special Forces and OGA. Joseph Teti is also the director of International Security Consultants.

Season three of “Dual Survival” is currently in production and just wrapped up episode four.

Forces Focus – USMC and UK Jump Ops

July 8th, 2012

Marines and Sailors from 1st and 3rd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Companies conducted a live jump with members of the British Army’s 148th Forward Observer Battery (Commando) at Edwards Air Force Base, CA, on June 15th. Years ago, when I was in the Army I went drinking with some of the members of the 148th when they and I were, by happenstance, all at Camp Lejeune on TDY. It resulted in one of the most epic hangovers of my life. The dive trip I took the next day at Topsail Beach basically sucked but I must say, those boys could hold their liquor and were some really great guys.

SO Tech Changes Their Coyote Brown Color

July 8th, 2012

SO Tech informed us late last week that they are changing their Coyote Brown color from Coyote to Tan 499. However, SO Tech will refer to the new color as Coyote Brown. As you can see, it’s a little lighter but you have to remember that the US Army adopted Tan 499 as the accessory color for use with OCP (MultiCam).
