Blackhawk Introduces The Omnivore Holster

Friday, September 30th, 2016

I got to check out the new ‘Omni’ during Modern Day Marine and I am impressed. It’s nothing like the Serpa, a holster which is synonymous with Blackhawk. Named because it will accept virtually any pistol you put in it, the Omnivore offers Level 2 retention ans fits more than 150 styles of semiauto pistols. Unofficially, it will fit almost three times that, but right now they are only claiming 150.

The secret sauce is their proprietary Rail Attachment Device. The Omnivore’s active retention mechanism locks onto RAD, not the frame of the handgun. It doesn’t wear the pistols frame or slide. A 3-position adjustable height thumb release disengages the locking mechanism when drawing the handgun. In the case of lightbearing models, the holster locks unto the weapon light.

This graphic depicts the three initial models. Light bearing versions include the Streamlight TLR-1/2 and the SureFire X-300U.

One final note; the Omni is designed to acceot all of Blackhawk’s holster mounting options.

DSC07338

This is Blackhawk’s new TecGrip IWB Holster. The TecGrip is made of a proprietary gripping material which allows for clipless IWB carry, and it can be washed with soap and water (apparently, the material is also great at exfoliating skin). The TecGrip is also ambidextrous for left or right-hand carry. The TecGrip comes in multiple sizes, for carrying anything from small, double-action revolvers to 5″ barrel large auto handguns.

This is the TecGrip Pocket Holster. It’s pretty much the smaller cousin of the TecGrip IWB, intended for in-pocket carry, but with all the same features. As expected, the TecGrip Pocket comes in multiple sizes which also supports smaller handguns, from small .22/.25 autos to most subcompact 9/.40 auto handguns.

Blackhawk Closes Norfolk Headquarters

Monday, April 6th, 2015

It was the mid-2000s and business had never been better for tactical gear manufacturer Blackhawk. The real estate market was booming as well. After moving the company a couple of times around the Tidewater of Virginia during the 90s, Founder Mike Noell purchased a prime piece of real estate right next to the Norfolk International Airport in an industrial area. Fortuitously, the Norfolk Police Department’s training facility was just around the corner. With a fully stocked ground floor pro shop showcasing Blackhawk’s latest products and an inhouse design team, it became a tactical mecca for those visting Hampton Roads.

The plan was to raise two buildings on the property. The headquarters building would house the company with an entire extra floor for lease to outside businesses in order to help offset the bank note. The second building would be another source of additional income. It was never built. By the time the HQ was complete, the housing crisis began to take hold. Not long after, Noell sold Blackhawk to ATK.

Since then, ATK has tried to use the space as much as possible, moving various business units in and out. Last week, ATK’s Utah-based Vista Outdoor Inc closed the facility.

According to Vista Outdoor spokeswoman Amanda Covington “The decision to close this facility was made after careful consideration of the facts and benefits to the business, customers and stockholders.”

This closure affects 43 employees. About a quarter of them were laid off and the remainder reassigned to other facilities in Virginia Beach or Overland Park, Kansas to Vista’s outdoor-products segment.

Blackhawk! introduced the GripBreak Leather Holster at SHOT Show 2015. The idea here is that it’s for the folks who won’t / can’t use the Serpa holster. Instead of your trigger finger to release the pistol, you use your thumb.
