Gunfighter Moment – Kyle Defoor

Saturday, August 6th, 2016

Twenty years of using scoped rifles and two wars of operating as a sniper makes me a firm believer in a first focal plane (FFP), Low Power Varible (LPV) with true one power for optics on a carbine. In my opinion the best setup for engagements from CQB distance to the capability of the caliber is a true one power to four or six power for 5.56mm and eight power for 7.62mm.

Years ago I helped develop the U.S. Optics SR4-C. It has a mil reticle on the first focal plane and a Aimpoint like, daytime visible red dot on the second focal plane (SFP). This is important to note for two reasons;

One, by having the reticle on the FFP- any range estimation done with the reticle will be true no matter what magnification your on. With a reticle on the SFP your ranging has to be done on full magnification to be true. This is huge for lo-vis or urban work where having a laser range finder may not happen, and using less than max magnification is done routinely. Additionally, I teach holds on a mil based reticle almost exclusively and they remain true no matter the magnification with a FFP reticle.

Two, by having the red dot on the SFP, the red dot will remain the same size no matter what magnification your on. With this you can use the red dot on max power for far shots at speed and this makes the LPV able to be used in CQB distance on one power with only a minimal increase in split times or first shots from the ready when individuals first swap over to it from a common red dot sight. Typically, I see nothing more than .15 of a difference compared to a traditional red dot on first shots from the ready and .05 on splits. Next, I’ll go over how to get rid of the time differences on first shots and splits compared to red dots.

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Saturday, July 23rd, 2016

After a brief hiatus, we are pleased to announce that Gunfighter Moment is back, with a new sponsor, Bravo Company USA. It’s a great fit, and an excellent group of guys.

I get questions all the time from students asking if they should run a red dot sight or a variable power optic on their carbine. My answer is simple; how do you expect to use the rifle in the real world? If you honestly believe any realistic shot will be within 100 meters then a good red dot sight will most likely do fine. If you expect to take shots beyond 100 meters and those shots are morally and legally justifiable then a 1-4 or 1-6 magnified optic has real merit. On my primary BCM training carbine I use an Aimpoint Micro instead of a magnified optic. I have BCM rifles setup with variable power optics but I have weighed the pros and cons and for me a red dot makes more sense. Give this topic serious thought before you decide which direction to go in. As always be safe and see you at the range!

Bravo Company USA is beginning sales of the newest iterations of their popular Gunfighter Grip Mod and Vertical Grip weapon components.

Gunfighter Grip Mod 3

The Grip Mod 3 features a reduced angle for improved ergonomics and trigger control. A hinged trap door offers storage inside the grip with a water-resistant rubber gasket. The Grip Mod 3 has an extended forward tang to close the gap between the trigger guard and grip and a high rise “beavertail” style back strap. This grip is up to a quarter of an inch wider when compared to the BCMGunfighter Mod 0 and Mod 1 grips.

Vertical Grip SHORT

The Vertical Grip SHORT is designed with a low-profile length for increased mobility and decreased “snag” factor. The forward angle increases the rigidity of the forearm while providing a more natural wrist angle. Spring loaded, reversible clamps allow for easy installation and removal and for users to setup fasteners on either side; this allows the SHORT to be mounted in reverse angle to increase control when grabbing handguard and grip. The grip’s flat sides give better yaw control to the shooter during firing and non-firing manipulations. Cross bolt mount designed to work with improvised tools and allow for easy adjustment or re-tightening.

Both the Mod 3 grip and vertical SHORT are made in the U.S.A. and manufactured from high quality, impact resistant polymers. Available color options: Black, Flat Dark Earth and Foliage Green.

We recently recommended the Arc’teryx LEAF Talos LT Halfshell and we just got these photos from Haley Strategic Partners that give you some good all around shots of the Talos LT to help you get a better feel for it. As it turns out there are a whole lot of other great products in these photos like carbines from Bravo Company USA featuring parts from B5 Systems as well as armor carriers and pouches from Mayflower Research and Consulting along with holsters from G-Code. You may also notice a lot of Kryptek camouflage in these photos including some cool custom combat pants from Australia’s Platatac, not to mention some interesting gloves from Outdoor Research.

Eric Kincel Leaves Vltor to Move to Bravo Company

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013

Right after Christmas Eric Kincel announced that he was leaving the company he founded 10 years ago, Vltor and its associate Abrams Airborne. What we weren’t able to say until now is that he was heading to Bravo Company to head up their newly established R&D department in Las Vegas. To industry insiders this move comes as little surprise. Kincel has worked with Bravo Company on several projects in the past and this looks like a great fit. We wish them luck.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

With the New Year comes a new beginning. As you probably gathered from my email address, I’ve taken up a position with Bravo Company USA as the Director of Research and Development. Even though Bravo Company is located in Wisconsin, Paul Buffoni (Pres./CEO) has started a second satellite facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. The LV facility is nothing more than a “Skunk Works”, or a location for Research and Development for the future BCM Gunfighter product line.

This recent move from Tucson was a major decision for my wife and I, but we are excited about the future and the possibilities. I look forward to working with and staying in contact with all my friends and supporters for years to come.

For those of you attending the SHOT Show, I will also be there, but will not be manning a booth. For the first time in ten-plus years, I will get to walk the floor and see the show in its complete splendor. Please email me if you would like to meet up and I look forward to seeing all of the familiar faces of the industry.

I hope everyone has a wonderful 2013.

Respectfully,

Eric S. Kincel
