Military Mountain and Cold Weather Work Shop – Over Snow Transport

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

The discussion began with a focus on sleds. Traditionally called Ahkios or Pulkas by the US military, the issue model dates from at least the 50s and is pretty big. Small unit operations call for a smaller model and the USMC is now using a model by Wilderness Engineering. The Marine Corps – Large Transport and Rescue Sled or MC-LTRS weighs about 32 lbs.

Kifaru also offers a sled called the Combat Expedition Sled which is 15 lbs as well as a smaller Combat Armadillo at 12 lbs.

Next, the group discussed skis. Granted, snow shoes are much easier to train troops to use but skis are much more useful for military operations than snow shoes. The increase in mobility is tremendous. And, because the skis will always have climbing skins, they won’t end up being all that fast in the down hill so they are more controllable than you might think. Additionally, little military skiing is downhill but rather as a means to transit from area to another.

Additionally, an interesting point that came out regarding the military’s mindset regarding NATO bindings. Modern commercial boots and bindings are way ahead of low leather boots. In fact, New plastic boots are very flexible. While the military procurement system might not purchase boots that fit every single foot type, there are things that can be done to help with fit including thermo molding of liners. The issue isn’t the boots, once you come to grips with using a single plastic, two-piece boot, but rather the bindings. New bindings like the NTN and Tech bindings are designed specifically for these new boots and are easy to get in and out of. The Dynafit patent for the Tech Binding has sunset so anyone can now make them.

Kifaru to Introduce Kryptek Highlander

Friday, October 19th, 2012

Kifaru informed us last night that they are introducing the Kryptek camo in the Highlander pattern to their line of packs. Kryptek was downselected by the US Army as one of four finalist families of patterns for their Camouflage Improvement Effort which is still in source selection.

They are the first tactical pack maker to offer Kryptek, and it will be throughout the entire line…packs, pockets, and accessories. They have settled on 1000D Cordura on the tactical side and 500D Cordura on the hunting side, along with Kryptek webbing.

Look for it on their website and ready to order in about 2 weeks.

Not Your Typical Kit Bag

Monday, April 4th, 2011

The new Kit Bag from Hill People Gear is something a little different that what you might expect. Rather than a big, lumbering holdall, it is a compact Admin-style pouch that fits right up front where you can access it. Designed primarily for civilian applications, it interfaces well with a pack and surprise!, includes a pistol pouch. The 7.5” x 2” x 11” sized pouch is designed to carry a pistol with a weapon light mounted and a few other essentials without interfering with a hip belt. It can be worn attached to a pack’s shoulders traps or with its included H harness making it very stable, even when running. This can be a great piece of kit for someone who doesn’t want to carry in a holster or fanny pack and can also use the convenience of a fold open admin pouch to access items such as maps as well as other gear.

You will notice that they are partial to Kifaru (as are we). In fact, you may also notice some similarities with the Koala and that is because it was initially designed by the folks at Hill People Gear.

The Kit Bag is manufactured for Hill People Gear by First Spear meaning it is made from mil-spec materials and is Berry compliant. Available in Ranger Green, Foliage, and Coyote, to order yours, visit www.hillpeoplegear.com.

Kifaru Now Offers Printed Webbing Option

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Kifaru International

American pack maker Kifaru recently discussed the issues that surround offering printed webbing on their web forum. Due to the cost involved with stocking additional materials in various sizes to manufacture packs with both printed Multicam and UCP webbing, combined with low market demand, they have decided to delay altering their line. However, they announced that they will now accommodate special orders, with a slight catch. You will have to provide the webbing.

Anyone interested in this option will need to contact Janice at the shop to get the correct Bill of Materials and be prepared to pay a 10% surcharge for a custom pack. This is the same procedure for other custom pack options they have offered in the past.

To order any of the Kifaru line of packs visit www.kifaru.net.

We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Kifaru International as a new sponsor of Soldier Systems Daily.
