Modern Day Marine Round Up

Monday, October 5th, 2009

There were a lot of great products at last week’s Modern Day Marine expo at Quantico, Virginia.

Wilcox Industries showed their new interface for the Ops-Core mount.

Speaking of Ops-Core, they debuted several new products available in early 2010. This eye shield was actually developed a couple of years ago but placed on hold while they refined the FAST technology for a military customer. The lens slides up and down on a track located inside the shell. It will replace the front brow pad inside the helmet as a unit and is ready to go awaiting production of the actual clear shield which will be manufactured by Oakley.

Vltor SM-OCG Light Mount on a Helmet

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Vltor’s unique low-profile light mount can be attached to a Ops-Core Accessory Rail Connector (ARC) via the Mil-Std 1913 adapter. ARCs are available in two styles; one is a component of the FAST family of helmets and the other is designed for the ACH and available directly from Ops-Core or MSA.

Vltor’s Scout Mount – Offset Classic G-series mount has been around for a couple of years but now that the ARC rails are seeing wider use we thought it was a good idea to remind our readers about this option.

NVG Mount Lights

According to Ops-Core, several companies are working on lights designed to attach directly to a helmet’s NVG mount. None of the lights are quite ready for prime-time but we were able to sneak a picture of one example at the recent ADS Warrior Expo.

Galea Photos

In March we published a story about the Dutch military’s Galea helmet program. At a recent military show in the Netherlands they displayed this prototype. The program is still on track for a 2011 fielding.

On another note, the Dutch military also displayed Ops-Core helmets at this show and they most certainly would fulfill most requirements for a modular helmet system although the cost is still a bit prohibitive for some customers. However, Ops-Core recently revealed to us that they have developed an Aramid shell for the Ballistic FAST helmet which is much lower cost yet only raises the weight to that of a MICH.

Ops-Core Releases New Products

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Ops-Core debuted their new Ballistic and Bump Future Assault Shell Technology (FAST) Helmets at SHOT show and just released them for sale to the general public. There are full articles coming soon on Ops-Core products so the intent today is to get the word out on availability. Both of the FAST variants share every detail except shells. The Ballistic Helmet protects from both impact as well as ballistic threats and the Bump Helmet is designed for activities such as parachuting. Both helmets are available in Black, Foliage, Tan, Multicam, and MARPAT.

The Ballistic Helmet offers the same amount of coverage as a TC-2002 (Gunfighter) but in a different cut. Manufactured from a combination of carbon and UHMWPE, the helmet offers a 20% weight reduction over the ACH and meets NIJ Level III.

The carbon fiber shelled helmet meets CE EN 1385 (Water Sports) and ASTM F1492 (Skate Board) impact standards.

Occ-Dial Liner Kit

Ops-Core ACH Liner

In the event you just want to modify the suspension of your MICH-style helmet, Ops-Core has released an ACH liner to retrofit your existing dome. Combined with the Ops-Core Head-Loc Retention System, the new Occ-Dial Liner provides you with the same stable fit found on the new FAST helmets. The kit consists of pads designed to ergonomically cradle the head as well as an adjustable fitband with an adjustable dial to control tension. The fitband is easily removable in order to accommodate COMs headsets with internal top headbands.

To order visit www.ops-core.com. Additionally, on a recent visit to Fort Bragg we noticed that Grey Group had Bump Helmets in stock.

Note: The Ballistic Helmet is only available for purchase in the US by US customers.

MSA ACH – Accessory Rail Connector

ACH Accessory Rail Connector

The Accessory Rail Connector MSA has been showing since SHOT 06 is finally available. Designed by Ops-Core and licensed to MSA, the accessory rail provides a Mil-Std 1913 rail to the sides of the MICH or ACH helmet. In fact, they also will fit any of the TC series of helmets from MSA. They are very lightweight and extremely strong. The glass reinforced nylon rails come from the factory in black but are easily painted to any color. My helmet has had a set since last November and accepted tan Krylon without a hitch. Each set of rails comes with two accessory adapters.
