SHOT Show – SureFire XVL2

Monday, January 20th, 2014

We continue our SHOT Show coverage with something interesting from SureFire. For those of you unfamiliar with SureFire’s naming convention, the XVL2 uses a X-series body, a Vampire head that manually switches between white and IR light, as well as 2 lasers. In this case it’s IR & Visible Red but they are considering offering an IT & Green model once they nail down the final color for the X400 Green. Additionally, SureFire is is planning to offer this as both a restricted mil version as well as a civilian legal Class I version.

The XVL2 is a single cell 3v light so admittedly, it is only expected to throw 120 lumens for the light component and 100 mW for the laser. The lasers are slaved to one another so when you adjust one for zero, they both move.

As for switching, the unit boasts a top mounted Dome switch ala the PEQ-15 as well as a port for a Pressure switch. Additionally, SureFire will offer DG-style switches.

There is currently still no hard launch date for the XLV2 but the fact that it was in the new product showcase tell us that they do plan to release it this year.

SHOT Show – ITW Nexus APA

Friday, January 17th, 2014

I was invited into the tent at the ITW Nexus Advanced Products and Accessories booth to drink an Orange Crush and take a look at something new. The Grim-lite takes the popular Grimloc and adds a Streamlight Nano.

20140117-125230.jpg

Next is the Tiki Buckle. Inspired by a well known gear guru (not me) the Tiki Buckle gives high horizontal and vertical strength to attaché webbing to MOLLE. It incorporates ITW’s patented wave technology in order to prevent slippage of the webbing.

20140117-125802.jpg

But the coolest thing is the Rail-Loc. Obviously, this is the coolest thing to happen to side release buckles since they started making them in Ghillie-Tex. The Picatinny compatible Rail-Loc connects right unto your rail and tightens in place via a Phillips head bolt. Then, you can connect a standard 1″ SR male buckle into the Rail-Loc.

SHOT Show – US Tactical Supply

Friday, January 17th, 2014

US Tactical Supply is displaying their extensive wares for Sniper use. In addition to the excellent HOG and PiG Saddles by ShadowTech, the rifle they had mounted caught my eye.

20140117-100032.jpg

It’s the Remington Accessory Chassis System (RACS) and this setup is similar to the XM2010 and PSR submissions. They dropped a 700 action in with a Marine issue Krieger barrel, and issue S&B scope 3-12 x 50 with gen 2 reticle and Badger Ordnance rings. They’ve also added the Tenebraex polarizer and kill flash on the scope. There is also a AI box mag.

SHOT Show – Under Armour

Friday, January 17th, 2014

Under Armour has completely resigned the Valsetz boot from top to bottom and call it the Valsetz RTS (Redesigned Tactical Shoe).

20140117-094332.jpg

The tread has been changed and the instep has been upgraded for Fast rope operations. The replaced the stitching in the upper with a welded reinforcement. Additionally, the entire shoe is DWR coated. The top incorporates the Clutch Fit technology from their football shoes. This fit works much like taped ankles without the additional weight.

20140117-094443.jpg

All told, it’s 2 ounces lighter than the precious model. The Valsetz will continue to be available for some time, but the RTS models are coming July 2014 from ww.underarmour.com in Tan, Black and Coyote.

SHOT Show – S&S Precision

Friday, January 17th, 2014

I’m going to tell you about several items from S&S Precision that were debuted at SHOT Show to the public for the first time.

First off is the Skeletonized Magazine Retention or SMR. Although we have you an initial glimpse of it in September, this is the first time it’s been out in the wild for everyone to see and this also marks its final form. Naturally, this also means they are transitioning it into production.

20140117-011519.jpg

The SMR which is the actual magazine holder itself is used conjunction with the BasePlate aka “The Docking Station” that serves the platform to mount to. Additionally, there are belt hanger adapters (seen below) and MOLLE adapters.

Next up we have two items. The first is seen to the right, which is the Manta Webbing Adapter or MWA and the other is the Pocket Shiv, to the left.

20140117-000002.jpg

The MWA is a simple, yet dedicated means to mount a Manta strobe to PALS webbing or other standard webbing.

20140117-013234.jpg

The Pocket Shiv started out as an internal project at S&S Precision by employees looking for a small, dedicated cutter. The decision was made to make it bad ass and the rest is history. The 440C blade’s design is based on utility use and features an over molded rubber grip. The sheathed also incorporates over molded rubber as well as a one-piece webbing adapter.

Samples are Toad Vine, Yellow, and Black.

Finally, it’s the SKH or Silent Killer Holster which as you can see was designed for use with a suppressor equipped pistol. Its open face holster design offers one handed operation via a simple button and a short draw. It also means a relatively simple reholster.

SHOT Show – LWRCi

Friday, January 17th, 2014

LWRCi’s long awaited Six8 platform is now available but in a bigger way than I had expected. As you may recall it is dedicated to the improved 6.8mm round which was developed with ATK for an overseas contract. It is a 90grain Gold dot projectile at 1700 fps out of the UICW’s 8.5″ barrel.

Their Six8A2 is an entry level gun. It features ambi controls and a quad rail. Next, is the SPR which is similar to their IC platform developed for the US Army Individual Carbine competition. It features a mono forged upper receiver as well as ambi controls. The Limited Edition Razorback model is the same as the SPR but features a laser engraved razorback and comes with 500 rounds of ammo. There is also the Six8 UICW that was sold overseas under contract and they are working on a PDW variant.

Remember, these use proprietary magazines developed specifically for the gun by Magpul but LWRCi tells me these are available.
