S.O. Tech Canine Insert Panel

Working dog owners, handlers, and trainers can now keep their canines working efficiently with S.O.Tech’s new Canine Insert Panel (#MSP-K9). This unique organizer features five detachable zippered pouches that can be used for storage of food, grooming tools, leashes, training aids and first aid. The first aid pouch can also be converted to a convenient fanny pack. The vinyl window on the outside holds necessary packing lists and essential veterinary records. Loops at each end can be used to hang the panel when open or as carry handles when closed. The panel zips closed for transport and includes lightweight shoulder straps for carrying. The best feture about the new Canine Insert is that it is designed as a module for the S.O.Tech Mission Packs (Urban, Trek & Expedition) for longer missions.

The Canine Insert Panel also includes a canine collar and leash, a 32 oz. lexan bottle for transport of water and a collapsible bowl that can be used for water or food. 20” H x 12” W x 5” D when closed.

Made in the USA and available in a variety of colors from S.O. Tech.

Marine Corps Considers Collapsible Buttstock

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

On February 27th the MARCORSYSCOM’s Program Manager for Infantry Weapon (PM IW) issued a Sources Sought Notice for a Collapsible Butt Stock for the M16A4 Marine Corps Service Rifle. The current fixed stock of the M16A4 becomes “an obstacle when combined with the increased bulk of improved body armor”. Consequently, they are looking for something to make the weapon a little more accommodating to different body types.

The Marine Corps’ requirements are pretty straight forward:

– It has to be collapsible

– They want a minimum of four (4) and a maximum of six (6) position stops in the butt stock for adjustment

– The new stock has to be just as reliable as the current stock if not better

It is important to note that there is no solicitation document to actually purchase any collapsible stocks but it is an important first step in that direction.

330D Revolution? Ha! Try 20D

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

At the OR Summer Market last August we took a look at a dizzying amount of fabrics. For us, only one or two really stuck out. One such fabric was from Cubic Tech Corp. Primarily they are sail cloth manufacturers and their product was used to bring the America’s Cup home to the USA. Non-woven flexible composites made from Cuben Fiber offer customizable ply orientations which afford directional stability and strength, as well as real rip-stop. A broad selection of films add the flexibility of an array of properties including toughness, low gas permeability, and visible & UV light protection. The material is intended to be glued rather than sewn and this could ultimately lead to stronger as well as lighter equipment.

Is the market ready for this yet? Not completely, but we hope that someone will take up the charge and try it out. Arc’teryx has already released a pack with welded seams on the commercial market and issue dry bags feature RF welded seams. At least initially we expect for such products to be for very specialized applications, but as the technology is refined perhaps one day everyone will carry equipment manufactured from ultra lightweight fabrics engineered specifically for the application.

They can even offer laminates in colors.

Tactical Visors from 215 Gear

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

215 Gear has just released the first color in their new line of visors. I use the term “tactical” visor pretty loosely but these are the first visors on the market in modern camouflage patterns. In addition to the Desert Digital pattern already for sale, they also plan on releasing Multicam, UCP as well as Coyote. Great for off duty wear, I would expect to see a lot of these in team houses and other deployed locations.

215 Gear’s Visor in Desert Digital

In addition to the unique color scheme, each visor also features a velcro patch on the front to affix your favorite morale patch. 100% Berry Compliant and backed by a lifetime guarantee. Currently available from 215 Gear and Grey Group Training.

Future Soldier 2030 Initiative

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

“Own the Fight” – This is the aim of the Army’s latest Soldier modernization S&T program. Despite the reference to 2030 in the program name, many of the program’s components are slated for the 2015 to 2020 time frame (2014 POM cycle). It’s the usual cast of characters; smaller, faster, leaner, meaner. Other than a move to monochromes, it pretty much looks like a repackaging of FFW.

Future Soldier 2030

The programs vision:

Every Future Soldier will be equipped physically, cognitively, socially and with the appropriate materiel to conduct Full Spectrum Operations.

This will require agility, adaptability, mobility and the ability to act efficiently and effectively to simultaneously perform operations in many traditional and non-traditional roles including but not limited to Warfighting in complex, rapidly changing environments around the world.

Will Ferrell meets MilSpecMonkey

Simianus En Obscurus

As odd of a mash up as that may sound that is exactly what happened on HBO’s “You’re Welcome America” starring Will Ferrell. As I watched him lampoon President Bush, the MilSpecMonkey symbol appeared during a hilarious skit about a brigade of attack monkeys training in secret at Fort Bragg. Sure, some of the show was over the top, but it was a good laugh all around.
