Happy 3d Anniversary

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

We almost missed it getting ready to head to SOFIC in Tampa, Florida. Interestingly enough, that’s where we got our new start in 2008 publishing some of our first articles on that show. We just get so busy around here that time seems to fly. This wasn’t our first go around in the tactical website game. We actually have our humble beginnings in The Gear Guru-Equipment for the Armed Professional founded in 1997. One of these days we’ll have to tell you all about that.

So here’s to three years of publishing seven days a week here at SSD. With over 2800 articles, we’ve covered a lot. Make sure you take some time to go back and read some of those old articles. There’s are some real gems in there. For example, here’s our first.

Thanks to our readers and advertising sponsors for supporting us. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Defense Alliance Helps Small Businesses Tap into Military-Industrial Market

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

According to a recent article published by Pioneer Press’s TwinCities.com, the St Paul-based Defense Alliance “has a contract with the U.S. Small Business Association to act as a coach for small, innovative businesses in the fields of energy conservation and power supply that want to approach the massive military-industrial complex.”

They provide expertise on how to navigate the jargon as well as the bureaucracy surrounding doing business with the Government. It seems, that in the tactical market, businesses are often started by former military personnel who at least have a basic understanding of how the Government does business even if the subtleties are missed. On the other hand, just as many new companies are started by those with zero ties to the military. In fact, it can be a strength, as they don’t have any preconceived notions on how equipment is “supposed to work or look.”

Additionally, the military continually requires new technologies to stay at the cutting edge and maintain an advantage over any adversary. One of the latest thrusts has been in the area of energy conservation and the use of alternative energy sources. This is exactly the types of capabilities that Defense Alliance works with.

Sometimes these energy conservation technologies cross into the Soldier Technology world. For example, the TwinCities.com article talks about a new tent fabric from Entropy Solutions.

Entropy Solutions, a Plymouth company, is experimenting with a tent material that could cut the use of generators that provide heating and cooling for tents used in war zones.

The Army hates diesel generators because their noise gives away their position and fuel is expensive — and dangerous — to transport into a theater of war, Entropy CEO Eric Lindquist said.

Entropy makes “phase change” materials — materials that absorb and store energy, only to release it later. That may sound like science fiction, but water is the perfect example of a phase change material — it stores thermal energy as it warms up and releases it as it cools.

Entropy’s tent material could store solar heat during the day and release it at night as the air temperature drops, he said. If the climate were right, no generators would be needed.

Hopefully, we will continue to see such technologies integrated into our warfighting capability.

Advanced Outfitters Khyber Belt

Monday, May 16th, 2011

I’ve had one for two weeks and it’s a great, simple belt. Some of the best things are simply built. Oftentimes you will get a webbing belt with a new pair of hiking pants but generally the buckles leave much to be desired by either being too bulky or slipping. The Khyber belt has neither of these shortfalls. The buckle is fashioned from a Tan ITW Waterbury G-hook paired with 1″ coyote mil-spec webbing to fashion the belt. The running end of the belt is secured in place by a ladderloc and to be sure it won’t slip, the webbing is doubled back. It isn’t going anywhere.

Designed for waists 25″ to 50″, additional sizes are available by special order. As the belt is only 1″ wide I do not suggest it for weapons carrying. AO is planning a 1.5″ belt and has unveiled a limited run Titanium buckle of a new design but single layer webbing just isn’t stiff enough for the task. Having said that, this new model will a welcome addition to the line.

AO makes three great points about the Khyber belt:
-The hook is super easy to get on and off but is secure
-The light weight and thin profile makes it great for hiking pants and shorts under pack belts
-The price; they are $12

AN/PRC-152 Adapter from Silynx

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Due to increased use of the AN/PRC-152 radio, Silynx Communications has released a new smart side PRC-152 cable adaptor. When connected to their C4OPS or Micro C4OPS, the new low profile cable adaptor enables the user to remote control the radio’s channels and volume. It also provides parasitic power from the 152 to the C4OPS or Micro C4OPS control box eliminating the requirement for yet another battery.

In addition, Silynx has also released BA5590 single and dual AN/PRC- 152 splitters. The splitters allow communicators and JTACs to carry up to two 152 radios powered from a single BA5590 battery.

Finally, don’t forget to contact Silynx and make sure you are using the latest software release.

Clarification

Monday, May 16th, 2011

We recently heard that a rumor is floating around that we charge for the articles we publish. This is absolute rubbish. We neither solicit or accept payment for articles. Additionally, we do not require that manufacturers provide us with product for free or even at a discount in order for us to publish an article. We know some sites do this, but this is not the case for us.

Having said that, we do have sponsors and we highly encourage you to support them.
