It’s All About The Lighting

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Since a few of our readers have an issue with our trade show photos, we thought we’d show you something. Please note…both of these photos were taken with the same iPad. Lighting makes a big difference, regardless of camera. Not having a couple of hundred lookie-lous hanging around helps a little too.

And, I’ll say it again. We aren’t a photo collector website. On SSD, you get the info the same time we do. If you want pretty pictures, visit one of those websites that posts lots of photos but has no idea what any of it was. We’ll have better photos, but only AFTER the show is over. You have to process the hell out of anything you take thanks to the crappy environment and we’d rather do it once we get home.

Corps Strength – Losing it

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Now that the holidays are over, it probably comes as no surprise that we’ve put on a few pounds. Really? You mean weeks of partying, drinking and eating lots of great food, combined with lets just say a “reduced” PT schedule would cause you to gain some weight? No kidding Sherlock. Now its time to get back into the groove and shed that holiday weight before it starts adding up. Now forget the New Years resolution crap, you need to do this the right way. IMO the worst thing you can do to accomplish this is to start some “quick fix” nonsense you saw on TV, some infomercial diet, supplement or workout program to try and lose the extra pounds overnight. First off they are unhealthy, expensive and in the vast majority of cases do not work long term. Losing weight and getting in shape first starts with the right “mindset” and continues with a solid plan and consistent effort. In my best selling book: Corps Strength I discuss the proper way to lose and then maintain a healthy bodyweight. I include a common sense eating plan that I have used and have recommended to many others (with great success) for years. I was started using this diet over 30 years ago when I was a AAU boxer and I had to make the 147 lbs weight class, but still have the strength to fight. It worked well for me (didn’t help keep me from getting punched in the face however) and It doesn’t require any special foods or supplements. Losing weight and then keeping it off will never be easy, but it’s not impossible and I actually think it’s not as hard as many people make it. My plan has worked for hundreds and it can work for you to. Try It. Be safe and good luck.

Paul Howe is a high-risk training instructor that served 20 years in the US Army, ten of those in Special Operations, where served as a Tactical Team Leader and Senior Instructor. During this tour of duty he was involved in several combat actions including the Battle of Mogadishu which was later portrayed in the motion picture “Blackhawk Down”.

This video was shot at the CSAT (Combat Shooting and Tactics) training facility in Nacogdoches, TX where Paul introduces you to Exterior Movement. After a thorough review of equipment, Paul demonstrates single person, two person, and team movement. He reviews clearing corners, the tactical flare, room penetration, CQB medical, the surgical rifle drill and the SUL movement drill. Our New Tagline

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

A couple of years ago, one of our readers said our site was, “like crack for the tactical addict,” since once you start visiting, you can’t stop.

But this SHOT Show I realized something and I even told Tactical Mama that I now know what Frankenstein feels like on Halloween. What I meant was that I do this everyday. For the vast majority of others, SHOT Show is the one week where they get to see the coolest new weapons and gear and rub elbows with Captains of Industry. That’s a daily occurance for me and one of the reasons we do the live blogging right from the show floor, to help you experience shows like we do, minus the sore feet.

We don’t have to tout our SHOT Show coverage because it’s part and parcel to our core. We cover as many shows as we can and break stories all of the time.

Like I tell people all of the time, “SSD is running a marathon.”

So, from that, a new Tagline was born.

A lot of departments rely on bicycles for urban patrol. In fact, the Las Vegas strip is rife with them. To this end, Safariland has teamed All Terrain Bike specialists Kona to produce the new Patrol Bike 29er. Bike riders will know that the “29er” designation comes from the tire size. One feature that is cool is the sloping tube that makes it easier to mount and dismount.

Some H&K G28 Pr0n for You

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

20120120-171024.jpg

H&K displayed an example of the new German Army automatic Sniper rifle, the G28. Intended for use in the rifle squad, it was developed as a replacement for the G3 DMR. Although there was a G27 model which was a 417, the Bundeswehr went ahead with the G28 which is based on the 417 but with a steel receiver. This, combined with the full length forend brings it in at a little over 16 lbs. Unfortunately, the rail sections do not extend all the way to the end of the forend.

The stock is a bit different than the 417s in both style and function. The integral cheek riser is adjustable and will reciprocate when you charge the rifle. Additionally, the action is very smooth and it was simple to charge. Interestingly, while the safety is ambidextrous and the upper receiver integrates grooves on both sides to lock the charging handle in place, the weapons comes with two charging handles, a left and right to accommodate all shooters. The buttplate is also adjustable for length of pull.

The dust cover is plastic.

One interesting feature of the scope is the T1 mount.

H&K informed us that the are currently no plans to import the G28. However, there are a few of the accessories They’d probably like to see brought in for integration into the 417.
