Here are a couple of shots from a recent trip to the range. The prototype MagPod is fantastic and allows you to do something unattainable with standard magazines. It is very lightweight and adds a great deal of stability to the weapon when the magazine is used as a monopod; hence the name. This isn’t something I would see you running on every magazine but it’s a definite must have add-on for your patrol mag.

As we are getting out training First Responders with our new Leadership training system one of the first things that becomes apparent when we get our students on the “Reaction Trainer”, is that many of them have a very hard time moving injured (simulated) persons. Now admittedly this is not an easy task. If you’ve never tried it, a person who weighs 200 lbs feels like 400 when they are unable to move themselves. In fact I had a friend of mine who has been a firefighter for over 25 years, tell me that more firemen are injured on the job moving injured people, than from burns or smoke. In any case Its a hard task, and just one that First Responders have to face everyday. The bottom line is be to able to do these difficult tasks takes more than the ability to run a fast 5K or bench press 300. It requires a type of fitness that is focused on real world needs. Just like those that Firemen, Law Enforcement and EMT’s need. In my book Corps Strength the primary goal of my PT system is too prepare you for these type of real world tasks. I came up with these effective training methods based on over 3 decades of experience, both from my own training and from many hundreds of Marines, Firemen and cops I knew over the years. Its simple to learn and proven effective by those who have tried it, of which many are First Responders. So If you need a fitness level beyond a Zumba class give it a try.

A few years ago there was a major shortage of Improved Outer Tactical Vest body armor systems. Two members of the Soldier Equipment Support Team, Life Cycle Logistics, Product Support Integration Directorate, Integrated Logistics Support Center, Natick Soldier Systems Center, studied the best way to commercially clean, rather than replace, IOTV garments. Willie Yung and Jason Sellazzo (seen above) found a method that has already saved the Army more than $62 million over two years.
They conducted a one-year study, sponsored by Product Manager Soldier Protective Equipment, in 2009-2010, using 90 IOTVs from the Central Issue Facility at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The vests were separated into nine groups of 10 each in three classifications: lightly, moderately and heavily soiled.
After the IOTVs were commercially cleaned three times each using four different methods in Nashville, Tennessee, they were sent to the Textile Materials Evaluation Team at Natick. Testing there revealed that commercial cleaning of IOTV components using “computer-controlled wet cleaning” was safe, effective, would result in huge cost savings over replacement, and would help ease any shortage of vests in theater.
“In 2010 and 2011, the Central Management Office has cleaned a total of 145,000 IOTVs,” Yung said. “And we estimate that by cleaning them, we have helped avoid spending over $62 million, because if they could not be cleaned, then the Army would have to buy new ones to replace them.”
Natick is currently working on a new contract to continue this money saving process. They are also looking at expanding the cleaning to other OCIE items beyond just the IOTV.

Way back in June of last year the US Army issued a pre-solicitation for the purchase of an additional 70,000-100,000 M4A1 carbines. The idea was that it was going to be a free-for-all and anybody, including incumbent Colt Defense could bid. The actual solicitation hit the street in August. Now, there’s an award, but it was issued at 6:20 PM and the announcement was under the innocuous title of, “GUNS, THROUGH 30MM” which is the Federal Supply Class (10) they weapons are categorized under. Too late for the daily DoD Contract award announcements. Odd? Absolutely, considering the size and commodity involved.

There’s another award (W56HZV12D0056) to Remington Arms Company for a “Max Potential Contract Value $180,000,000.00” for the generic “GUNS, THROUGH 30MM” issued about an hour before the award mentioned above. Remember, that $180 Million is a contract ceiling and allows the Government to purchase their full requirement over multiple years without competing multiple contracts.
Notice the contract numbers. The base contract is W56HZV12D0056. The additional 0001 would denote an initial order meaning there will be more to come.
These carbines will be produced in accordance with the Colt Technical Data Package. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. In the mid-80s FN began producing the M16A2. However, access to the Colt TDP will certainly give Remington a leg up. Hopefully, these Remington guns will be better than the early FN M16s which were of low quality.
