MSR – Luxury Lite Mesh Cot

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Introduced during OR Summer Market, MSR’s Thermarest brand is offering the Luxury Lite Mesh Cot. I just tried this sample out during an industry get together courtesy of Open Range. It’s very cool. The longest component is 12″ and it can be broken down for carriage or stowage.

As you can see, it gets you just off the ground but the design flexes to support your body. Definitely beats sleeping in the dirt.

The mesh cover is lightweight and available in a variety of colors. Lengthwise, it is supported by 2 shock corded poles. It is suspended off of the ground via 12 circular nylon feet which accept aluminum poles that arch for tension to keep everything taught. It’s a real slick set up. What amazes me is how compact and light it is. It’s under 3 lbs complete. This is how big it is stowed.

The CORE Panel

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

I asked Austere Provisions Company’s President, Michael Griffin to describe his latest creation and he shared this with us, “The CORE Panel is a concept I have been playing around with for quite a while after trying to find a good solution for a few problems. The first issue I was running into was that with all the latest and greatest lightweight and compact gear I could carry a tremendous amount of capability but I often had issues keeping things organized in both commercial and military style bags and packs. I was carrying a lot of the same items whether I was using a day pack or a messenger bag and when flying a lot of those items had to be checked. Assembling them all on the CORE Panel allowed me to organize and move items quickly and easily.”

He took the PALS modularity concept and developed the CORE Panel. It allows the user to set it up with small to medium general purpose or specialty pouches whether they be for commo gear, medical supplies, magazines, demo, signal gear or whatever else the user’s mission dictates and keep all that gear organized and easily retrieved. PALS was the perfect fit. There are already thousands of pouches out there and many users are finding themselves constantly reconfiguring their equipment. One day they are operating in an overt and it’s covert the next. The CORE Panel offers the user tremendous flexibility.

In addition to being able to mount most any MOLLE pouch, the CORE Panel has a sewn in grab handle and accessory loops on each side to allow attachment of FASTEX repair style buckles for a sling-style shoulder strap and waist band or to attach to the interior of vehicles or anywhere else the user can come up with.

The production pieces will be slightly different from the sample photos based on improvements developed during use. Word has it that Velocity Systems will be building these. Delivery times and pricing to follow soon.

SAGE Control Ordnance Hand-thrown Munitions – CS Irritant and Practice White Smoke

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

SAGE Control Ordnance, Inc has released the new SAGE 66mm Tri-Canister Hand Thrown Munitions (HTM66). It is a separating continuous discharge pyrotechnic munition and available in CS irritant smoke as well as a white training smoke variant.

The HTM66 Tri-Canister Series design consists of three separate canisters pressed together with internal separating charges. Upon deployment the canisters separate and land roughly 20 to 25 feet apart affording a greater area of coverage than similar single source munitions. It can be hand thrown or launched from a shotgun cup mounted delivery system. The average burn time of each separating charge range between 20-30 seconds and this enhances the ability of the HTM66 to quickly saturate the desired area with CS or white smoke.

Eating On The Run

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

20121015-145419.jpg“Eating On The Run” by Fred Damara is a handbook designed to offer you a working knowledge of dozens of readily harvested plants, grasses, nuts, and berries that require little to no preparation. Foraging is one of the most undertrained skills and this book will help learn how to distinguish safe plants from toxic varieties, which parts of the plant are edible and when, and where abundant supplies are likely to be in each season.
