Warrior Expo – MATBOCK

IMG_9669

The Tarsier Eclipse from MATBOCK is an easily adjustable, add-on lens for night vision systems that provides the ability to see objects at all distances without adjusting focus on the NVG tubes themselves. Back in December MATBOCK shared this new technology with us. At the time, they were a few weeks away from going live; but they just weren’t 100% satisfied with that final prototypes so they went back and redesigned their product. Now, they are satisfied with its performance and are ready to release the product.

Below is the data that Matbock collected back in November using PVS-14’s and a 5.0 megapixel point and shoot camera.

Test #1:
Urban area with a lot of lights surrounding us. The 1st picture we focused the Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) onto the corner of the house in the distance. In the 2nd picture we kept the focus at the corner of the building but then started to engage the Tarsier Eclipse, immediately the person started to come into focus.

2)Test#1_Eclipse_Closed

Test #2:
Dashboards or lighted panels are a huge problem for NVGs without using the Tarsier Eclipse. In picture 1 we focused on the gazebo (maybe 150-200 yards away), and you will notice how the panel becomes “washed out” from the NVGs. In picture 2, we kept the focus on the gazebo and started to engage the Tarsier Eclipse, while you cant read the numbers or letters on the buttons you can distinguish that there are actually buttons now.

3)Test#2_Pic1_NVG Only

4)Test#2_Pic2_Tarsier Eclipse engaged

Test #3:
Rural area that had some background lights, but no direct lighting. Picture 1 we focused the goggles to the person in the distance. In picture 2 we focused the goggles on near person. Picture 3 we focused back on the person in the distance and then started to engage the Tarsier Eclipse, which allowed both objects to remain in focus for the current lighting conditions.

5)Test#3_NVG Focused on far object

6)Test#3_NVG Focused on near object

7)Test#3_Eclipse Engaged

The Tarsier Eclipse is designed to fit the following models:
AN/PVS-7, AN/PVS-7B/D, ANVIS-9, AN/PVS-14, NEPVS-14, AN/PVS-15, AN/PVS-18, BNVD, BNVD-G, AN/PVS-23 (F5050YG), and M944 Pocket Scope.

So What Exactly Has Beyond Been Up To?

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

I’ve had a lot of friends asking me what Beyond Clothing has been up to. They made quite the splash at Winter OR but I don’t think a lot of people got ‘it’. They didn’t show any new product and focused more on the “approach” of where they were going. But now, I think it’s going to be abundantly clear that innovation is a focal point at Beyond. They’ve taken the SOF program management model, applying it to rapidly develop clothing solutions and these two Level 3 garments that are part of their new Axios system, are classic examples of what I am talking about.

First, a word about Axios. It’s as if Beyond took the basic construct of USSOCOM’s Protective Combat Uniform, a scalable environmental clothing system, completely redesigning it, piece-by-piece. Remember, Beyond isn’t a tactical company. They are a clothing solutions company that produces niche products for the tactical space. Much of their work will exist in the outdoor market where individual customization is almost unheard of. Tactical will benefit from the lessons learned supporting a wide variety of outdoor athletes. And that is what is happening here.

Now, on to the Titan L3A Fleece and Titan L3 Modular Alpha. As you can see from the photos, both feature zip-off sleeves. This means that you can swap them from one garment to the other which is pretty cool for customization for not only the environment you’ll be in, but also your individual metabolism. Some people just run warmer than others. Not to mention, it can also be worn as a vest. Additionally, both jackets incorporate a low-profile waterproof hood that rolls up into the collar. Finally, while both offer excellent features, they are at their core, simple, lightweight garments.

L3A Fleece

CTS1

The L3A Fleece in manufactured from two different Polartec Wind Pro fabrics for wear as either a mid insulation layer or as outerwear. In addition to two handwarmer pockets as well as two Napoleon-style chest pockets. The collar is also lined with gridded fleece for comfort.

L3 Modular Alpha

CTS2

Years and years ago, in cold weather we used to wear field jacket liners under our BDUs. They were simple, comfortable, lightweight, packable, and warm. Quite simply, they worked. The L3 Modular Alpha reminds me of that functionality but purpose built. As one guy put it, “It’s like wearing your woobie.” It utilizes Polartec Alpha fabric that is not only warm but breathable. The lightweight face fabric is comfortable and the entire jacket stuffs into one of the two handwarmer pockets for stowage. The jacket also features two slanted chest pockets.

Beyond tells me that there may well be more sleeves produced, based on the requirements they receive from the field. This is very interesting and could result in a set of sleeves for breachers that shed sparks and splinters, or an FR sleeve or something completely different, like maybe a short sleeve. I can’t wait to see what you guys ask for from them.

Offered in sizes Small – XXLarge, the Titan L3A Fleece comes in Coyote and Black while the L3 Modular Alpha is available in Coyote, Black and MultiCam. I just want to let you know that the garments in the photos above aren’t made in the final colors, but rather are of samples. I browbeat them into photographing those at the factory last night so that I could share some great images of these jackets with you after seeing them yesterday afternoon.

I want to leave you with one final thought. These jackets can be customized for size as well if you don’t fit into the standard size table. This has always been one of Beyond’s strengths, and it remains so.

To see these and other new items, visit Beyond at Warrior Expo East, today and tomorrow. Don’t forget, the first 20 people that mention “SSD” at the BEYOND booth will receive a special gift.

Gerber Downrange Tomahawk Now Shipping

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

Gerber has started shipping the Downrange Tomahawk. Designed for breaching, the axe head’s beveled edge is capable of going through walls as well as doors. The backside of the axe head functions as a hammer for getting through hinges, doorknobs and other obstacles. And, the pry bar at the end of the handle, controlled by a cut away grip in the axe head, offers considerable leverage.

Gerber Tactical Tomahawk

“The Downrange Tomahawk is another product of Gerber’s close relationship with the US Armed Forces,” said Andrew Gritzbaugh, Marketing Manager for Gerber. “By collaborating with a variety of experienced professionals we’ve developed a tool that accomplishes multiple forced entry tasks, reduces the number of tools carried and ultimately lightens the load. This product accomplishes our mission of providing the warfighter with better battlefield solutions.”

Gerber Downrange Tomahawk

The Downrange Tomahawk includes a MOLLE-compatible sheath and Kydex blade cover for safe carry and fast, unrestrained deployment.

You can see the Downrange Tomahawk we first mentioned during last summer’s Outdoor Retailer as well as other Gerber products at Warrior Expo in Virginia Beach 11-12 July.

The Boss Rugby from Velocity Systems

Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

Boss rugby

Many of my friends have seen me wearing this really cool Black Rugby Shirt over the past few months (no, that’s not me in the photo above). Like I told those of you who asked, it’s the Boss Rugby from Velocity Systems. Intended as range or training shirt, it’s not only comfortable and functional, but it also looks good. In fact, I’ve been wearing it all over the place. And, while I can sing its praises, the quote below really sums this thing up.

Just tried the rugby, it actually whispered awesome as I put it on.
-Boston area SWAT cop and Velocity test pilot

First off, you have to consider the name. It was created in New England and was in the final stages of development right around the time of the Boston Marathon bombing. Some of those first responders were wear testing the garment and if you know Boston, it has its own vernacular. Along with “wicked”, “boss” is a favorite description of something well liked. It was in those frantic couple of days during the search for the terrorists that the Boss Rugby was named.

Boss Rugby

The design is simple. In addition to a rugby-style collar the Boss features unobtrusive envelope pockets on either of the short sleeves with Velcro patches on each pocket that is low profile enough that it doesn’t look out of place. I’ve worn mine out to dinner several times and I haven’t been given a second look. It’s been suggested that it would be well suited for a LE Agency’s relaxed polo uniform and I think it would be a good option.

The Boss Rugby is made from a nylon/spandex blend to give it a little mechanical stretch as well as great wicking properties to increase comfort. After all, it is a training shirt. The fabric also incorporates both soil release treatment as well as Odorexx™ Antimicrobial which is good for 25 washes.

The Boss Rugby will be available in late August, sizes Small – XXLarge in Black, Earth, and Wolf.

See the Boss Rugby as well as other new Velocity Systems products at Warrior Expo East 11-12 July in booth #111. Tell them SSD sent you to be entered into a free giveaway of a Boss Rugby. Very limited. Only Boston SWAT cops and editors have them to date.
