TALOS – What Is Happening?

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

Somewhere between May, when USSOCOM dropped the “special notice” announcing the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit or TALOS, the main stream media picked up on it and started calling it an Iron Man suit. The US Army’s RDECOM even produced this slick little video that literally fuels the fire.

NPR published a short, feel good after speaking with SOCOM’s Acquisition Executive Jim Guerts. It’s worth a read if you are interested in Soldier Tech.

I still question the timing of this effort. Why wasn’t it accomplished during the height of spending? The command and industry alike could have more easily absorbed R&D efforts. Now? Money’s tight and the Recession has finally hit the defense industry. I see them accepting less risk.

Having watched this same story played unsuccessfully, over and over again like a broken record and having seen a list of the companies that SOCOM currently has brought in for this week’s briefings, I’ll say that you’ll see movie sequels 4, 5 and 6 before you run across a real DoD Iron Man suit.

I’m skeptical, to be sure.

Introducing The NavLight From Specialized Tactical Systems

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

I was introduced to Rob from Specialized Tactical Systems at SHOT Show a couple of years ago by the folks at Crye Precision. STS is a small yet innovative weapon manufacturer and they’ve built guns for a variety of people including my SSD carbine. At SHOT Show 2013, Rob showed me something very cool and I’ve had to keep quiet about it. Until Now.

NavLight® was designed to provide Just Enough Light™. NavLight® provides 0-5 lumens of light allowing for map reading, soft ambient light, SSE, chamber checks, etc. Every other weapon mounted light I’ve seen has a fixed beam, but the NavLight® takes a different approach. Its patent pending mounting system allows the light to rotate 360°, meaning you get illumination where you need it rather than directed coaxially with the barrel of a weapon. The patent pending rotation/locking system is really cool and allows you to reposition the light very easily.

The NavLight® features an adjustable intensity LED of 0-5 lumens with steady on and slow/med/fast strobe functions. In addition to the 360° Picatinny Rail Mount there is also a magnetic/hook Velcro mount as well as a wrist band. It can be also used with PALS through the use of a ITW QASM RAMP Picatinny Mount. The NavLight® can also be adapted to an Ops-Core ARC rail. Offered in White, Green, Red, Blue and IR LEDs.

It’s That Time Again – EOY

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

Let’s face it. Funding this year has been rough and now, here we are in 4th Quarter, and you’re trying to obligate funds. To make matters worse, you may have money but no clear direction on whether or not to actually spend it. That means you are going to have to have your ducks in a row when word comes to execute. Quite frankly, the TLS program is a good way to purchase the equipment that you need, even if it looks like a laundry list. But that’s not the only way to obligate funds. There are a wide variety of means to get what you need: GSA, NSNs, DoD EMALL, 8(a), SDVOSB, WOSB, the SOCOM Natick IDIQ as well as several other IDIQ vehicles. You guys are lucky. While it’s still an option, you aren’t relegated to heading down to SSSC and loading up on wax, toilet paper and ink pens. There are a lot of other options. Recently, I spent some time talking to ADS and I’d say that they know them all.

ADS EOY

These days, ADS isn’t just about Special Operations Equipment. During the recent Warrior Expo I saw MRO equipment, Medical gear, expeditionary tentage and even C4ISR systems. Contact your POC at ADS for more info.

Doomsday Castle Comes to NatGeo

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

Prepping continues to be all the rage and even better are reality series about preppers. It appears “Doomsday Preppers” has spawned its first spinoff.

20130806-185102.jpg

At Outdoor Retailer I was checking out the ballroom when I ran across the Wise Foods booth. They sponsor the NatGeo series “Doomsday Preppers”. One of the more interesting episodes last season involved a man who had built a castle in the wilderness and was testing his progeny to determine who he would leave it to. Sounds like it has everything needed for a great reality series of its own; family conflict. And they’ve got it. Hopefully, they’ll share a trick or two. Coming August 13th.
