Darley GRF Expo – Phantom Products

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Phantom Products has been around for decades and their covert Phantom light is a standard issue light for Army and Navy aviation. They recently introduced a ResQ Lens to increase the versatility of the Phantom Light. From its very inception the Phantom Light was designed to provide sufficient light for the user’s tasks but to not give away his position through errant light emissions. They do this by creating soft light with LEDs inset behind a shroud as well as a dimming switch.

Unlike other lights, the Phantom Light does not emit light to the sides. In order to offer 360 degree emission, they’ve introduced the ResQ Lens which fits on the end of the light. With this lens in place, it can be seen from any angle for use as an emergency strobe.

Darley GRF Expo – Tactical Support Equipment Waterproof K-9 Camera

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

TSE specializes in technical surveillance and specialized communications applications. They have developed a waterproof (IP 67 water and dust proof) camera system for K-9 use. In addition to its waterproof features, the extreme lowlight black and white wireless camera also offers IR sensing and illumination as well as excellent range (~300m in addition to 3 reinforced concrete walls with steel hatch doors). The system boasts a 2.5 hour run time and the camera mast is spring loaded so that it will not break off if the dog runs into an obstacle. The mast can also be stowed for rest periods and transport. The receiver unit incorporates a 2.5″ screen and can be wrist or chest mounted.

Natick SOF Office Issues Changes to Winter Camo RFI

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

There has been a great deal of industry interest in USSOCOM’s recent call for winter/snow camo examples through their Program Manager-Special Operations Forces Survival, Support & Equipment Systems (PM-SOF SSES) office at Natick. Since releasing the Sources Sought Notice last week they have changed the request to industry slightly. But those few changes make for big differences.

Two really stand out.

First, rather than just providing visual camouflage, the patterns must now also provide IR concealment which makes total sense.

The camouflage pattern should be designed to provide concealment in alpine to sub-alpine environments, where snow, ice and rocks are the primary environmental features. The camouflage patterns should provide concealment in both the visual and near infrared ranges.
Camouflage patterns submitted to this sources sought solicitation must be beyond the development phase, and be printable on lightweight synthetic materials.

Second, the option of submitting three patterns per company has unexpectedly been curtailed to one. Naturally, this doesn’t preclude a company from working through a partner to submit additional patterns.

Interested companies may submit one camouflage pattern which meets the description above for this solicitation.

MURPH: The Protector Opens Nationwide This Weekend

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

MURPH: The Protector is the story of Navy SEAL LT Michael Murphy’s life as told by his friends, family and teammates. Michael was raised in Patchogue, New York, attended Penn State University and then joined the U.S. Navy to serve in the SEAL Teams. He gave his life for his men in 2005 and was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 2007. This weekend, MURPH: The Protector opens across the nation at select Regal Cinemas.

“The Regal team understands how this film will connect with moviegoers across the country,” said Scott Mactavish, the film’s director. “It’s critical that we honor and remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, and Regal recognizes that there’s an audience eager to hear this story. We’re honored to call them partners.”

A portion of the proceeds from the film will go to the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Formed by LT Murphy’s family in August 2005, the Foundation was given New York Department of Education approval and incorporated in New York. The Foundation was granted IRS tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation with the expressed written purpose of providing academic scholarships.

Colorado Gov Signs Gun Control Measures Into Law

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

From the very beginning it was an uphill battle stopping a Colorado legislature and Governor’s mansion occupied by Democrats from enacting restrictive new gun laws that are ill conceived and largely unenforceable, so it was really no surprise earlier today when Gov John Hickenlooper signed into law three bills. These laws require universal background checks for gun sales, restrict the size of ammunition magazines to those capable of holding nor more than 15 rounds and make gun buyers pay for their own background checks.

MagPul has sworn to leave their Eerie, Colorado home if the magazine ban became law but not before seeding the state with as many standard capacity magazines as possible before the law takes effect. Now the question is, where will they go? They’ve alluded to multiple locations and if I had a dollar I’d put my money on one of those being Wyoming due to its strong support of the Second Amendment as well as close proximity to MagPul’s current location in “occupied” Colorado. Good luck to my friends in the Centennial State. SSD will begin retrograde operations soon for our personnel behind enemy lines.

Sneak Peek – Spartan Ranch Tactical Training Center

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

I was invited to a sneak peek look at a new training facility near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and i want you to check it out. ISAP Inc has assembled a new set of training capabilities for mid-Atlantic region. Spartan Ranch Tactical Training Center is located in Maysville, North Carolina just north of Jacksonville, home of the US Marine Corps’ Camp Lejeune. Naturally, it’s also close to the Atlantic Ocean and the Intercostal Waterway for additional training opportunities.

There are three components that make up the capabilities that Spartan Ranch Tactical Training Center offers. First, there is the facility itself. Next is Tactical Applications Group which is the training arm and provides specialized instructors. Finally, Spartan Tactical Arms offers firearms manufacturing and maintenance.

20130320-155234.jpg

Some of you may remember Tactical Applications Group’s range facility. Spartan Ranch Tactical Training Center uses the same basic layout but parent company ISAP Inc has greatly expanded the facility to include new berms for the precision rifle range which is certified out to 800 yards but can be extended to up to 1200 for certain customers, a 100 yard general purpose range as well as 50 and 25 yard pistol/shotgun ranges.

20130320-155210.jpg

In addition to the ranges, Spartan Ranch Tactical Training Center will boast billeting for up to 70 personnel as well as latrines, classrooms and a team room facility for gear prep and mission planning. During my visit, contractors continued to improve the facilities slated for a 1 May launch.

Tactical Applications Group is rooted in the Camp Lejeune area. Staffed by Marine and Naval Special Warfare Veterans, it offers a variety of training specialties including CQB and long range precision shooting. As the staff expands they will be adding specialists from all branches to represent full SOF capabilities.

Also located on the Spartan Ranch Tactical Training Center campus is Spartan Tactical Arms which specializes in precision rifles as well as a line of CQB pistols designed to meet the USMC’s exacting requirements. Both of these products are already available for government and LE clients but will be offered commercially as well. Vice President CJ Quinlan also hinted at a line of carbines on the horizon.

ISAP has additional plans for the 300 acre facility including a shoot house and tower. Keep a look out here for details. Interested parties should contact cj@spartanranch.com.
