Digital Concept Engineering Wins UK Map the Gap Competition

Thursday, August 20th, 2020

Hinckley, 13 August 2020 – Digital Concepts Engineering Ltd (DCE) has won a contract in the UK government’s Defence and Security Accelerator’s (DASA) Map the Gap competition to develop a semi- autonomous reconnaissance and survey system that will help troops safely and stealthily advance into enemy territory over water.

DCE will lead its part of the Map the Gap industry team with a vehicle based on their rugged X series of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), which incorporates DCE’s Marionette robotic vehicle architecture, the heart of the Map the Gap solution. Other organisations and technologies supporting DCE’s bid are Jacobs’ 6th Sense data analytics, drones & autonomous routing provided by Frazer-Nash Consultancy and Eijkelkamp Geopoint SoilSolutions’ ground sampling expertise. Map the Gap ground surveys will be carried out using a submersible ROV carrying data sensors, soil sampling tools and sonar equipment, while the surrounding area will be scanned from the air by drone.

The Map the Gap competition was run by DASA on behalf of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. The programme covers two phases for the development and demonstration of a number of system demonstrators able to tackle the key issues of gap crossing survey. The total funding for Phase 1 of the Map the Gap programme is approximately £1.2m, with a further £2.5m anticipated for Phase 2 activities.

Robert Hammond-Smith, DASA Delivery Manager for Map the Gap, said:

“Our vision is to ultimately remove personnel from these dangerous tasks with a remote system that allows more crossing locations to be surveyed, increasing the choices available to commanders and giving an opportunity to surprise the enemy.”

Lionel Nierop, DCE’S Business Development and Operations Director, commented:

“We are delighted to have won a contract on DASA’s prestigious and technically demanding Map the Gap competition. DCE’s successful bid with our X-4 ROV and our Marionette universal control system builds on our previous work in defence and nuclear applications.”

“This win demonstrates the opportunities presented by long-term collaboration between a wide range of innovative companies, working alongside the government, and we are looking forward to successfully meeting the Map the Gap challenge together.”

“Gunsmith Tools, Cutters & Gauges – A Primer” is Now Available

Thursday, August 20th, 2020

The fourth book in the Gunsmithing Student Handbook series, containing over 100 years of knowledge, is now available in paperback or eBook for all students of gunsmithing.

Kalispell, Mont. (August 2020) – Fred Zeglin, gunsmith, teacher, and writer, worked with the makers of gunsmithing tools, reamers, headspace gauges, and much more to create “Gunsmith Tools, Cutters & Gauges – A Primer,” the fourth book in the Gunsmithing Student Handbook Series. It contains a wealth of knowledge about how and why gunsmithing tools are designed and manufactured as they are. Many folks getting into gunsmithing, either professionally or as a hobby, need this jump start about the available tooling and the basics of its use. The book is out now and available on Amazon or from www.4drentals.com.

Consider that the information in this primer is assembled from the writings of people who best know these tools, including the manufacturers who make them. The school of hard knocks takes a long time to teach valuable lessons and this book can save you years and introduce you to some tools and concepts you were unaware of. Even old timers will pick up some valuable information; don’t continue through life believing “Wives’ Tales” when you can have facts.

Each book in the series provides a highly detailed and technical explanation of the subject at hand in a way that any gun lover will be able to understand. Other titles in the series include “Chambering Rifles for Accuracy,” “Chambering for Ackley Cartridges,” and “Understanding Headspace for Firearms.” These titles dovetail nicely with the new book as the subjects are all connected.

This is an old-fashioned primer filled with modern information about gunsmithing tools. Merriam-Webster defines a primer as “a small introductory book or a short informative piece of writing.” Teaching you how these tools are designed and made will make you more efficient and profitable as a gunsmith.

Zeglin commented, “People who have decades of experience with a job and it’s tools have a ‘curse of knowledge.’ In short, they have no idea how much of what they know needs to be explained to people with less experience. Even the terminology that we use requires defining. I think this book is a huge step toward breaking that curse.”

“Gunsmith Tools, Cutters & Gauges – A Primer” is ISBN-13: 978-0-9831598-6-5. The price of the book is $12.95 for paperback. The softcover measure 5.50” x 8.5” and contains 75 Pages. The eBook version is available on Amazon. eBook Version is ISBN-13: 978-0-9831598-7-2.

New Intelligence Training Keeps Sky Soldiers Proficient

Thursday, August 20th, 2020

Grafenwoehr, GERMANY – Intelligence Paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade recently completed the Army’s Military Intelligence Training Strategy (MITS) Tier II training on July 25, 2020, as part of the 173rd Brigade Field Training Exercise 20. This training is designed to build combat readiness and prepare the Brigade for the upcoming training event, Exercise Saber Junction 20.

MITS validates that Military Intelligence staff and units are prepared and proficient in their core tasks, through several qualifying events in the Human Intelligence, Intelligence Electronic Warfare, Combat Electronic Warfare Intelligence, Analysts and Geo-Analysts Platforms.

“This tier II event is important to us, because it gives us an opportunity to aggressively train in our critical intelligence tasks that our jobs require.” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Chuck Damboise “It allows us to tell the brigade commander that we are ready to fight and win any mission that the 173rd has.”

The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army’s Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the United States European, African and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward deployed across Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build partnerships and strengthen the alliance.

“The only [other] time that we get validations is when we’re at the school house [(Advanced Individual Training)].” Said Paratrooper Pfc. Aaron Wilkerson, a Human Intelligence Collector (35M). “Outside of the school house no one is really coming by to make sure you know what you’re doing. MITS is to ensure you know what you’re doing at your job.”

As part of his tier II validation, Wilkerson conducted a role-play scenario in which he practiced tactical questioning on a person pretending to be a detainee. In turn he passed the intelligence gathered to the other intelligence platforms for their validations.

MITS is a four tier strategy executed as individual stand-alone events and sequenced in order from Tier IV – Individual training, Tier III – Intelligence Crews, Tier II – Intelligence Platforms, and Tier I – the entire Intelligence War Fighting Function during a brigade exercise. The progression of the four tiers allows intelligence leaders and paratroopers to conduct focused training toward defined goals that are expected to be completed prior to a brigade-level combat training center rotation, like those executed at the National Training Center, Joint Readiness Training Center, or the Joint Multinational Readiness Center. Earlier this year, in late March, the 173rd started using this new training strategy.

Due to COVID-19, the unit had to work around the virus prevention measures in order for training to go smoothly. Tier II validation was scheduled to take place in April. However, this validation was rescheduled to the Tier I validation period. The largest issue that the unit faced in this particular training was the tier II Human Intelligence validation. The Human Intelligence Collectors are required to conduct tactical questioning of Human Intelligence Collectors from other units that pretend to be detainees. In order to combat the spread of the virus, both parties were required to sanitize, maintain appropriate social distancing, and utilize personal protective equipment.

Tier II played an important role in the operability of the brigade’s intelligence platforms. This training allowed Danger Company to remain technically and tactically proficient in their skills as intelligence platforms, as well as to provide the commander with an assessment on their capabilities and operational status.

The final portion of MITS, tier I; the War Fighting Function validation, for the 173rd Airborne Brigade was previously scheduled for late July or early August this year. However, the validation has been rescheduled for early 2021 due to COVID-19 spread prevention in mid-March. The War Fighting Function validation requires the cooperation of all the intelligence platforms to conduct an operation as a whole. This factor demands that all information, evaluations, and decisions must be precise and accurate in order to complete the mission.

Hungarian Armed Forces Establish Joint Venture with Rheinmetall to Produce Lynx Infantry Fighting Vehicle

Wednesday, August 19th, 2020

Deal helps the Hungarian Army meet its NATO commitments through continued modernization of the country’s defence industry

Key facts

Major order: Hungary intends to procure the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle

Order volume expected to exceed €2 billion

New Joint Venture for the production of the Lynx in Hungary

First NATO and EU customer for Rheinmetall’s innovative Lynx IFV

With the signing of an agreement in Unterlüss on 17 August 2020, the government of Hungary has embarked on a massive programme worth over two billion euros to modernize the country’s defence industry and military capabilities. The move was announced by Hungary’s Secretariat of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology and the Commissioner for Defence Development. Rheinmetall, Europe’s foremost maker of army equipment, will be cooperating with Hungary to create a joint venture and production facility in Hungary to manufacture the most modern Lynx infantry fighting vehicle.

Hungary is the first NATO and EU member state to choose the Düsseldorf-based Group’s innovative new IFV. The step is of central importance in Hungary’s ongoing programme of military and industrial development, which aims to transform the Hungarian Army as quickly as possible into a world-class fighting force capable of actively addressing security challenges in the Euro-Atlantic region.

In the words of the joint statement read by László Palkovics, Minister of Innovation and Technology, and Gáspár Maróth, Commissioner for Defence Development: “As part of its commitment to NATO, Hungary is replacing its heavy ground forces equipment. Following the tanks and artillery, it is now the turn of the infantry combat vehicles, which form the backbone of the capabilities set. As the most advanced system of its kind, the Lynx has demonstrated its suitability for a central role in the Army’s capabilities spectrum for decades to come. In keeping with earlier promises by the Hungarian government to enhance the nation’s armed forces, this cooperative endeavour extends far beyond the modernization of military technology. Partnering with a major European corporation will result in the modernization of our defence industry and thus to the expansion of our industrial portfolio.”

As Armin Papperger, chairman of the executive board of Rheinmetall AG, explains: “The Lynx’s market breakthrough is a major success for us. And the fact that we were able to convince Hungary – an important EU and NATO partner – to choose this innovative vehicle makes this success all the greater. In making this forward- looking procurement decision, Hungary’s top political and military officials have demonstrated real leadership. Not only does the move place Hungary at the forefront of European army technology. It reaffirms the Hungarian government’s commitment to being a reliable, more militarily effective partner of its NATO allies, a policy which it is pursuing with systematic energy.”

“We’re very proud”, said Mr Papperger, “to be able to make an important contribution to the sustained expansion of Hungary’s defence technology capabilities in cooperation with local industry. We look forward to working together with our Hungarian friends and partners, and will do everything in our power to assure the long-term success of this venture.”
