This Is My Squad: Forging Leadership Skills Through the Squad Leader Development Course

Tuesday, January 12th, 2021

“This Is My Squad,” an initiative of Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael A. Grinston, aims to build more cohesive units across the Army and empower noncommissioned officers with the leadership skills to anticipate issues and address them early on. The Army Resilience Directorate’s contribution to TIMS is the Squad Leader Development Course, which aims to advance this initiative by giving squad leaders the opportunity to critically reflect on their leadership style and learn to employ evidence-based leadership skills. Leaders who understand their leadership philosophy, know their Soldiers, and live the Army Values can forge cohesive Army units that are strong and resilient in the face of any challenge.

SLDC facilitators will guide squad leaders to craft their personal leadership philosophy focusing on the areas of commitment, trust, and developing others. A personal leadership philosophy can increase leader consistency and effectiveness. It provides a plan for value-based action, which can be particularly helpful in challenging moments or at tough decision points. A personal leadership philosophy, particularly when shared with others, can improve relationships. It allows others to understand a leader’s values, priorities, approach to decision-making, and expectations. During this two-day course, squad leaders discuss doctrine from Army Doctrine Publication 6-22 and research from the field of human performance, organizational psychology, and positive psychology to highlight the impact and importance of squad-level leadership behaviors. During the course, Soldiers discuss effective leader behaviors in different components of leadership to include character, motivation, trust, and developing others. The intent of the course is to motivate students to identify, adopt, and internalize leadership behaviors outlined in doctrine and supported by research. R2 Performance Experts delivered SLDC as a pilot from Dec. 1-2 to 24 squad leaders that make up Grinston’s TIMS Leadership Panel. On Dec. 3, the TLP provided feedback to R2’s Curriculum Development Team on the course content and design so organizers can make improvements before making the course available to all squad leaders.

ARD requested that the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research conduct a longitudinal evaluation of SLDC to determine the effectiveness of the training in improving squad leader knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that foster unit trust and exemplify ethical leadership. In partnership with R2 Performance Experts at Fort Riley, Kansas, it is anticipated that SLDC will be delivered to squad leaders with the 1st Infantry Division in March 2021. Half of the participating squad leaders will be randomized to receive SLDC training as part of the evaluation. The other half will be assigned to a wait-list control group to receive training following the completion of the evaluation. Soldiers receiving SLDC will complete surveys before training, following training, and at follow-ups scheduled over two months after the training. Surveys are designed to assess Soldier’s pre-training knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors and offer Soldiers the opportunity to provide feedback regarding the training.

Racal Acoustics Announce Major Headset Contract with Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO)

Monday, January 11th, 2021

Racal Acoustics, the UK-based global designer and manufacturer of audio communications and protection systems has today announced a new contract to supply the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO), with their RA4000 Magna digital headset system. The 7-year framework contract is worth up to USD $4.7 million and includes a full support package comprising of training, consumables and spares, plus an option to supply follow-on orders, as required.

The Racal Acoustics RA4000 Magna digital Active Noise Reduction (ANR) headset systems supplied under this contract include: the headset; a soft helmet liner; a ballistic helmet with integrated side-rails and NVG mount; and a downlead to connect the system to the in-vehicle intercom. Selected specifically to meet the needs of Leopard 1, Leopard 2 and CV90 heavy armoured vehicle crews, the RA4000 protects the crew from in-vehicle noise whilst enabling effective communication and situational awareness. The system also allows the user to dismount from the vehicle yet retain Active Noise Reduction (ANR) protection – powered by an integrated battery. As well as connecting the crew to the intercom, the system can be connected to remote communications devices, such as Personal Role Radio or other man-pack radios to allow the user to communicate with dismounted troops outside of the armoured vehicle crew environment. Already established as market leaders in military headset technology for high noise environments, this order further underlines Racal Acoustics as the global provider of choice for users wanting the very best protection whilst retaining optimum communication and situational awareness.

René Ulbjerg Toft, Deputy Technical Director, Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization, Land Materiel Systems Division said: “when tendering for a framework agreement on new CVC helmets for the Danish Army, DALO was focused on choosing a tactical solution that could provide as much attenuation as possible, without compromising clear intercom and radio communication. Through thorough user tests we conclude, that the RA4000 system was the only solution, that could satisfy our comprehensive requirements and operate efficiently on the heavily armoured platforms. DALO is eager to put the RA4000 system in service, to ensure the safety of the soldiers and to benefit from the flexibility that the software defined solution provides”.

Alexandre Huart, Vice President – Sales and Marketing at Racal Acoustics said: “we’re all very proud of winning this order and we’re looking forward to delivering a first-class product and support service to the DALO”. He added: “the RA4000 system delivers exactly what was specified by the customer. Our future-proofed design allows the Racal Acoustics engineers to upgrade the integrated software to take account of our ongoing innovation activity – constantly striving to maintain our ‘best in class’ position and reputation”.

Introducing the FN 509 LS Edge

Monday, January 11th, 2021

(McLean, VA – January 11, 2021) Introducing the FN 509 LS Edge™, the ultimate tactical pistol designed by FN to give users every advantage in the most demanding environments. From the front lines to the range, this factory-tuned 9mm Long Slide delivers cutting edge performance. When split seconds make the difference, the FN 509 LS Edge provides the advantage of a fully customized firearm, right out of the box.

“FN’s commitment to developing performance-driven products has reached a new level with the FN 509 LS Edge,” said Mark Cherpes, CEO for FN America, LLC. “The foundation of unmatched FN craftsmanship and battle-proven reliability combined with expert counsel from professional users, allowed us to develop the most advanced FN 509 pistol to date.”

Building on the proven FN 509 platform, FN teamed with tier one operators and world champion pistol shooters, to strategically enhance and purposely combine critical components of the new FN 509 LS Edge. The end result is a handgun that delivers superior versatility, accuracy, control and speed.

Versatility

The FN Low-Profile Optics-Mounting System™, combined with the green fiber optic front sight, allows users to run iron sights and a co-witnessed miniature red dot optic. Quickly mounting a favorite MRD is enabled with four included optic mounting plates. The midsized frame gives users the feel of a full-sized pistol that can still be comfortably concealed. An ambidextrous slide stop and two interchangeable backstraps allow users to further customize the FN 509 LS Edge, matching any hand size.

Accuracy

The five-inch hammer-forged target-crowned barrel delivers unmatched accuracy. With the 6.7-inch Long Slide bearing a 0.040” fiber optic front sight, the extended sight picture improves target acquisition and tracking. Additionally, the green fiber optic front sight co-witnesses with a micro red dot, users instinctively acquire a sight picture after their draw. The duty-rated, flat-faced trigger breaks cleanly at 90 degrees and features a reduced pull weight of around four to five pounds.

Control

Achieving the ideal balance, the 509 LS Edge’s lightening-cut Long Slide compliments the graphite anodized base plates and flared aluminum magazine well, resulting in a flat shooting pistol that racks faster, recovers instantly and tracks perfectly. Maximum control is gained with the frame’s full-height stippling, ensuring a full-contact 360-degree grip, locking into the hands under fire to reduce muzzle flip and control recoil.

Speed

The short take up and positive reset of the flat-faced trigger allows for speedy follow-up shots, while the green fiber optic front sight enables faster target acquisitions and transitions between shots. The flared, graphite anodized aluminum magazine well and weighted base plates of the 17-round magazines make for lightning-fast reloads, getting you back on target faster than ever.

The FN 509 LS Edge, part of a performance-driven series of firearms bearing the FN name, is shipping to an FN dealer near you. Gain an edge and learn more about the FN 509 LS Edge by visiting www.fnamerica.com/edgeseries.

Magpul Announces MBUS 3 – Front and Rear Sights

Monday, January 11th, 2021

Although an in-person version of SHOT Show will not happen this year, Magpul is keeping up their tradition of announcing new products the week before the event.

The first two are the new MBUS 3 – Front and Rear sights. I am very excited about these.

The latest version of the MBUS (Magpul Back-Up Sight), the MBUS 3 is constructed from impact-resistant polymer, making it lightweight and extremely durable. It looks more like the MBUS Pro than the original model and still features the same spring-loaded technology as its predecessor, simple deployment with an ambidextrous push-button.

Both made from polymer, Magpul has significantly reduced the footprint of the MBUS 3 from the MBUS. The new models sit at just .44” when folded and 1.15” at its widest point.

The sights are M1913 Picatinny rail compatible but the front sight shouldn’t be mounted on an AR15 direct gas block mount

Both front and rear will be available in Black, FDE and OF Green.

Now is the best part, the price. The front sight is $39.95 and $59.95 for the rear.

MBUS 3 – Front

The MBUS 3 Front Sight includes tool-less elevation adjustments and a dual width enhanced front sight similar to the MBUS Pro. It is standard AR-height when deployed.

MBUS 3 – Rear

The rear sight includes a rapid-select aperture system.
