Barrett Secures First International Government Contract for MRADELR

Thursday, September 26th, 2024

Murfreesboro, TN – Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc. has secured its first international government contract for the supply of the MRAD Extreme Long Range (MRADELR) sniper system.

Specific details of the transaction were not disclosed, however, Barrett confirms that the order for the US-allied nation will be fulfilled and delivered within the year, demonstrating the company’s commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions to international defense organizations.

The MRADELR is a military-proven, extreme long-range system designed to meet the precision demands typically achieved only by custom-built rifles. As part of the renowned MRAD family this rifle features user-changeable barrels and calibers, allowing it to adapt to a range of operational needs. With its innovative technology, precision engineering, and high-quality materials, the MRADELR is the next step forward in extreme long-range marksmanship.

The rifle is available in multiple calibers including .416 Barrett and provides superior performance for target engagement beyond 2000 yards.

Recently recognized as the Ballistic Best Editor’s Select for “Best ELR Rifle,” the MRADELR had its first public showing at the 2023 King of 2 Miles competition where its performance clearly stood out above all other production rifles at ranges out to 3526 yards.

Barrett CEO Bryan James stated, “We are honored to provide these international organizations with the tools they need to secure their defenses and protect their interests. The MRADELR is yet another testament to our commitment to excellence and innovation in the field of long-range precision firearms.”

With this new contract and continued recognition in the industry, Barrett continues to lead the charge in advancing long-range shooting capabilities for both military and civilian markets around the globe.

The company recently announced a significant agreement to upgrade the NATO-allied Norwegian Armed Forces’ existing Barrett Model 82A1 rifle, in service since 1999, to the more advanced model M107A1.

Army Announces Small Multipurpose Equipment Transport Inc. II Contract Awards

Thursday, September 26th, 2024

Detroit Arsenal, Mich. (Sept. 24, 2024) — The Army announced the award of two Other Transaction Authority Engineering and Manufacturing Design contracts today to American Rheinmetall Vehicles, LLC, and HDT Expeditionary Systems, Inc., totaling a combined $22 million to provide eight prototypes each of the Small Multipurpose Equipment Transport Increment II.

American Rheinmetall Vehicles’ S-MET Inc. II offering

HDT’s S-MET Inc. II offering

The S-MET was originally developed as a Directed Requirement meant to identify opportunities for the Army to quickly field existing platforms to improve the fighting force’s capability. The S-MET Increment I is a single radio-controlled, eight-wheeled platform designed to carry payload, generate power for organic electronic systems, and conduct unconstrained movement. In its first increment, the S-MET is capable of carrying 1,000 lbs. of equipment and provides enhanced capability primarily in Infantry Brigade Combat Teams, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, and Security Force Assistance Brigades.

The second increment seeks to double that payload capacity while adding several improvements identified by Solders during evaluation and operation. Those improvements include:

  • Higher exportable power to enable modern mission payloads like Unmanned Air Systems and communications equipment
  • Improved audio signature reduction
  • A dismounted wireless mesh communication network
  • Increased reliability
  • Worldwide grid charging
  • Modular and open architecture allowing for easier and more cost-effective upgrades

“S-MET Increment II addresses capability gaps associated with excessive physical burdens, recharging batteries during continuous operations, and reducing sustainment burden for semi-independent operations. The S-MET reduces Soldier load and enhances small unit combat effectiveness by reducing fatigue and injury caused by excessive physical loads, shifting the burden to the robotic platform,” said Kyle Bruner, the Army’s project manager for Force Projection, Program Executive Office Combat Support & Combat Service Support, headquartered here.

“S-MET supports the Army’s mission to implement robotic and autonomous system capabilities with urgency to lessen risk to Soldiers in multi-domain operations,” he added.

Successful S-MET Increment II developmental testing will lead to a production contract slated for late Fiscal Year 2027 for an Army Acquisition Objective of up to 2,195 systems.

Whiskey-5: Safariland CADRE

Wednesday, September 25th, 2024

Whiskey-5 is a recurring Solider Systems Daily feature that asks “Who, What, Where, When, and Why” of the industry. It is intended to give you a more in-depth look at those manufacturers, trainers and individuals that make our industry unique. We have found that these basic five (5) questions are the most basic keys to understanding. Past Whiskey-5s have included such industry heavyweights as Primary Arms, Black Triangle, Kryptek, HyperStealth and even Tactical Fanboy. Today, we’ll be sharing an overview of the Safariland CADRE program.

The Safariland Cadre is a collection of SMEs who support Safariland's mission of saving lives by providing training, experience-based insight, and the benefits of several extraordinary backgrounds.

WHO:

The Safariland CADRE program was a new evolution from the original Team Safariland. In 1985, Team Safariland was launched as one of the first corporate-sponsored competitive shooting teams. Safariland forged a team of some of the top competition professionals in the industry. These individuals promoted and competed with Safariland products in various competitions, including USPSA, 3 Gun, Steel Challenge, and more. As time evolved, so did the concept of a team of professionals representing and supported by Safariland. Hence, the CADRE program was born.

Members of the Cadre include such SMEs as:

WHAT:

What does CADRE mean?

“CADRE- A selected group of specially trained and skilled individuals for one specific purpose or mission.”

That definition is completely dialed in on Safariland’s Cadre program. Safariland’s mission is to save lives. These SMEs provide training, insight, advice, philosophy, and innumerable other benefits based on the experience and expertise gained from an extraordinary collection of backgrounds.

WHEN:

Founded in 2021, Safariland established a new approach to “brand ambassadorship.” Following the legacy of Team Safariland, the CADRE Member program was developed. This program would bring new life and unmatched experience and skill to Safariland’s mission.

WHERE:

Our CADRE members come from all over the country. They are law enforcement professionals, military veterans, tactical instructors, and hard-core competitors. Formal classes, less formal courses, and symposiums are available in a wide range of venues.

WHY:

The program itself is in direct support of Safariland’s mantra and mission: “Together, we save lives.” Why else?

Why these particular SMEs? It’s fundamentally an expression of Safariland’s trust in their ability to bring hard and soft skill instruction to our customers as well as their first-hand knowledge of (and trust in) Safariland products in the field.

MSRS Navigation – A Solution for Navigating in a GPS-Denied Environment

Wednesday, September 25th, 2024

I get excited when I find out about small businesses with innovative technologies that solve real problems, particularly those owned by fellow veterans. Even better when these capabilities are low cost.

Take for example, MSRS Navigation, which was founded by a retired Tier One operator after having experienced GPS jamming while deployed overseas. In fact, all five of the company’s employees are Veterans and the gear is made in Asheville, NC.

Confronting the Electronic Warfare threat is now a challenge faced by everyone and the Western use of Global Positioning System for navigation can no longer be solely relied upon to accurately determine position and route.

MSRS Navigation has developed the only ITAR-free, Denied-GPS navigation system. What’s more, the system is completely non-RF, with no reliance on satellites or any signals for that matter. There’s nothing to jam.

Having been awarded two patents with three more in process, they instead rely upon an AI/ML engine which examines data and identifies errors from GPS degradation, identifying last known good point to base modeling from. This is supplemented with real-time data from multiple sensors. The result is .1 meter accuracy per mile and is correctable by the end user at any point by simple correction via drag/drop of the icon on the map-based interface GUI, to the correct point. Alternatively, there is a plug-in for ATAK users.

The systems runs independently from, but in parallel with GPS, allowing the user to rely upon GPS in high-fidelity environments. At any point, the user can switch to MSRS if for example, they enter a degraded environment such as jamming or dense foliage or tunnels. MSRS always runs in the background.

The current Army program of record is Mounted Assured Positioning, Navigation and Timing System (MAPS) Gen II which is great if you’re part of the BOIP. If not, MSRS is available today, for immediate deployment. Over forty of their fly away kits (FAK) are currently in use with US and International SOF in overseas combat environments.

Simple to employ, the FAK comes packed in a Pelican 1200 and can be installed in under 30 minutes. Additionally, MSRS is about the quarter of the price of MAPS.

While the system is currently configured for ground and sub-T navigation, the company has a CRADA in place with USSOCOM through SOFWERX to support an upcoming evaluation of the system. To expand its use, they have partnered with Hefring Marine out of Iceland to build a Maritime system and expect to have a working prototype in early 2025.
