FN Herstal Launches FN Arka Assault Rifle

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026

Chambered in 5.56mm NATO the new FN ARKA Assault Rifle was announced today by FN Herstal.

A completely new design, FN has combined AR-style ergonomics to the SCAR platform’s proven short-stroke gas piston system. It also features an adjustable gas regulator for firing in adverse environments or with a suppressor.

FN states that the platform retains familiar AR controls and compatibility with standard AR buttstocks and pistol grips, while offering a fully ambidextrous and symmetrical design for enhanced operational flexibility.

It seems that everyone is looking toward high pressure ammunition. According to FN, the FN ARKA incorporates a robust locking mechanism designed to withstand severe overpressure.

The FN ARKA comes standard with either a 14.5” standard barrel and a short or long M-LOK handguard, or a 11.25” CQC barrel and short M-LOK handguard. All configurations are available in FDE or Black and with selective fire or semi-auto only triggers.

Dear Industry — Stop The Slop: Part Deux

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026

A few weeks ago I put out a plea to industry to not use Artificial Intelligence Large Language Models to create press releases. Something happened the following week which really lit a fuze under me. Not long after, something happened which made me double down.

I was attending SOF Week and happened across a company specializing in AI. Why they use it in an entirely different way than LLMs, I shared the story of running across a PR so egregious that I created my post. A little laugh was had by all.

Not long after, I received that very company’s PR for the show. It was even worse than the one that had set my jaw the week earlier.

I headed back to the booth and as I walked up the head of Marketing knew exactly why I had returned. I showed them the PR and what the back end looked like.

It had been written by their Public Relations Agency and the company I was speaking with contacted that agency to inquire about their product. I too emailed the representative who had sent me the PR to inquire as to whether AI had been used and included a screenshot of the HTML version of the PR in question which was an absolute hot mess.

That evening I received this reply.

When I read the reply I let out a loud curse. Those of you who have to deal with slop know why.

You see that extra long dash in the email? That’s called an “emdash” and nobody on this planet uses that damnable punctuation mark except for AI. For some reason it’s so insidiously embedded in AI that if you tell an LLM not to use it, it will go back to it very quickly. You see an emdash, it’s 99.9% AI derived slop.

To summarize, I send out an inquiry as to whether or not a document was written using an LLM and the reply I received denying its use was either written using AI, or was a serious prank. Pretty bold move.

The next morning, I returned to the company the PR had been written about to discuss the issue with their head of marketing. Initially, they did not know the significance of the use of the emdash. They then made me privy to an email written in response to their inquiry with their PR agency. That email disclosed that they had indeed used AI to assist in creating the PR. This was at odds with the assertion I had received from my POC.

I don’t like being lied to. I am in my late 50s and the father of six children, I know when someone is BSing me. At that moment, I made a decision to no longer accept any PR submissions from that particular representative, no matter where they went to work, and from that PR agency in general.

I’m not going to throw them under the bus publicly, but hopefully they read this and are ashamed knowing that I’ve got their number.

As for other agencies out there, it’s OK to use an LLM to conduct research or to assist with grammar and readability. But don’t let it do all of your work for you.

Customers read the slop and know that it’s junk. AI agents scour the web, searching for slop and let search engines dough to avoid recommending websites that are full of slop.

Army Awards Production Contract for the Spectrum Situational Awareness System (S2AS)

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, MD – The U.S. Army is enhancing electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) situational awareness for commanders through the procurement of the Spectrum Situational Awareness System (S2AS). Awarded by the U.S. Army Contracting Command – Aberdeen Proving Ground (ACC-APG), the single-award, firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract with 3dB Labs, Inc is valued at $350M for procuring, training, and fielding the S2AS and includes a five-year ordering period.

The S2AS senses, detects, and reports in near real time a command post’s electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) signature and sources of electromagnetic interference (EMI) from all sources. As a dedicated EMS situational awareness system, it supports commanders’ Emissions Control (EMCON) decisions, EMI resolution, and warns operation centers of unauthorized or intentional sources of interference to enable multi-domain operations.

“Transformation in Contact (TiC) unit engagements have allowed us to rapidly integrate new technology in the operational environment for the warfighter. The effort to demonstrate and test COTS-based products with TiC units significantly accelerated the S2AS procurement timeline and will result in fielding starting this year,” said Lt. Col. John Cross, Product Manager for Tactical Spectrum Warfare. “S2AS will make a significant contribution in conducting Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations.”

After successful prototyping and an operational demonstration, the S2AS program received approval to enter the Urgent Capability Acquisition (UCA) pathway with a first unit issued planned in 2026.

“We are proud of the critical capability S2AS provides the U.S. Army to sense and see ourselves in the EMS. By delivering unprecedented visibility, this technology prevents electronic fratricide, helps shape the electromagnetic operating environment, and significantly increases command post survivability against modern threats,” said Col. Scott Shaffer, Project Manager for Electromagnetic Warfare & Collection.

Savox Introduces Savox Fire Protect – a Fully Integrated Communication and Active In Ear Hearing Protection Solution for Firefighters

Monday, June 1st, 2026

Espoo, Finland – Savox, a global provider of mission critical communication solutions, today announces Savox Fire Protect, the world’s first fully integrated firefighter communication system combining active in ear hearing protection and wireless push to talk (PTT) in a single, purpose designed solution.

Firefighters operate in high noise, high risk environments where communication clarity, hearing protection and ease of use are essential. Existing solutions typically require trade offs between audio quality, hearing protection, usability or resistance to heat. Passive hearing protection can reduce situational awareness, while current wireless PTT solutions are often ergonomically compromised when used under protective clothing or with heavy gloves.

Savox Fire Protect has been designed to remove these compromises

Savox Fire Protect provides firefighters with a complete communication solution that combines active hearing protection, clear audio and intuitive wireless PTT operation. The system can be worn over or under fire resistant protective clothing, or under a chemical diving suit, without restricting movement or usability.

The solution consists of the Savox NC 100 active in ear headset with internal microphone, the Savox TRICS C2 radio control system, and the Savox W P100 wireless PTT control unit. All elements are designed for reliable operation in demanding firefighting conditions and for use with standard protective equipment.

“The requirements of firefighters differ fundamentally from those of other professional users,” said Elmeri Backman, Portfolio Manager, Savox Communications. “Savox Fire Protect is purpose designed for firefighting operations, ensuring reliable communication, active hearing protection and ease of use without compromise.”

The individual technologies used in Savox Fire Protect are based on Savox solutions that have been extensively deployed in real world military and rescue operations globally. With Fire Protect, these proven technologies are brought together into a fully integrated system tailored specifically for firefighting applications.

Savox Fire Protect expands Savox’s portfolio of mission critical communication solutions for professionals operating in safety critical environments, supporting improved situational awareness, communication reliability and user safety.
