FirstSpear Friday Focus – Disruptive Technology

Friday, March 2nd, 2018

In January 2012 FirstSpear introduced the first production tactical vest with a laser cut MOLLE compatible platform along with Tubes, a new standard for rapidly donning and doffing ballistic protection.  Since then the technology has been fielded with assets of the United States Department of Defense, State and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies and early adopters from the international special operations community.

Ronnie Fowlkes, VP Business Development – “Everyone said the technology wouldn’t work when we first released it and thought we were crazy when we said we were discontinuing MOLLE permanently. Now, everyone else is trying to catch up and move this direction.”

Today, we take a look at some of these vests after more than five years of continuous field use.

Lieutenant Dan Colasanto heads up the Garland Police Department and SWAT Team and was one of the first teams to test, evaluate, and field the original Strandhögg plate carrier system more than 5 years ago. Those original vests are still in service with the Garland PD today. According to Dan, “Through heavy use and long continuous hours we have had zero issues with the carriers and they have exceeded our expectations.”

Garland SWAT Vest

We have been FirstSpear customers since the company started. The 6/12 system provides superior performance and durability compared to other carriers I have used in my 25 years of service in law enforcement and 22 years of SWAT. –Lt. Dan Colasanto – Garland Police Department

Tubes single hand operation was a game changer all on its own and the perfect complement to 6/12. When the two technologies are used together they can afford the operator about 40% reduction in weight compared to vests with the same features.

With increased demand from end users and adoption by operators within the US DOD, FirstSpear has agreements in place with industry leading manufacturers and OEM partners to license FirstSpear laser cutting technology and integrate Tubes into systems supporting the warfighter, law enforcement and security professionals. An enormous amount of energy was put forth to bring these disruptive technologies to the front lines and FS welcomes additional equipment manufacturers to expand upon the success of Tubes and laser cutting technology for their own equipment solutions.

Scott Carver, President & CEO – “After years of investment and development in new technology, we’ve demonstrated lighter weight, improved performance, and now real world durability at a level never seen before. In an effort to get this technology to the men and women who need it as rapidly as possible, we are actively working with other domestic manufacturers to help them integrate laser cutting and Tubes in to their vest systems.”

FirstSpear was founded in 2010 by a team of former service members and industry professionals dedicated to building the most advanced load bearing equipment and armor platforms for todays armed professional.

FirstSpear Friday Focus – Centurion Pant Sneak Peek

Friday, January 26th, 2018

This week we are giving you a sneak peek of the Centurion Pant, FirstSpear had outfitted their manakins with, on the SHOT Show floor.

The Centurion is FirstSpear’s first go at trousers and I like the design. It’s simple and doesn’t scream “tactical”. Outwardly, they look like any pair of Outdoor pants. In fact, FirstSpear envisions them as daily wear as well as for outdoor use.

One feature that is really cool is that the button waist closure is backed up by an adjustable Waist Band with a solid, no-slip buckle for use without a belt. The internal waist band is the same material as used in the Line 1 Belt, only thinner and slightly padded. The external belt loops are optimized for holster carry on or in the belt.

The front pockets incorporate nano stretch mesh while the rear patch pockets remind me of jeans.

In between, on either side, there is a Stretch Bridge Pocket which fits pistol magazine, flashlight, or knife/multi-tool.

Although not seen, the samples have an interesting feature I’ve never encountered before. Tucked in mesh pockets beneath where the sidearm and reloads are carried are removable Poron foam inserts for padding.

The knees are articulated and the crotch features a diamond gusset to enhance fit, mobility and comfort.

The fabric is 6.5 oz 50/50 NYCO ripstop. FirstSpear’s Jon Laplume describes it as on “intimate” blend, sharing that the nylon fibers are cut and textured to be the same length and texture as the cotton so that when it is spun into yarn you have an even texture throughout the fabric without a direction. Additionally, the cotton is combed rather than carded. This process is more difficult, but strips out any short or week fibers producing a better quality, stronger, and ultimately softer fabric. This fabric is more abrasion resistant than the 65/35 polycottons commonly used in Europe and also more breathable and cooler.

The Centurion Pant is sized like a military uniform trouser from Small through XXLarge. Likewise, there are Short, Regular and Long lengths. But, the hem is simple to make tailoring easier.

No word yet on final color offerings. However, the samples feature darker thread which highlights the body mapping design.

With the final product still a ways out, look for these sometime later this year from www.first-spear.com.

FirstSpear Friday Focus – OEM Partner Series – Ryker Nylon Gear

Friday, January 12th, 2018

This week, we focus on one of FirstSpear’s OEM Partners, Ryker Nylon Gear and their AFAK (Ankle First Aid Kit).

IMG_6073

Made in the USA by FirstSpear the AFAK (Ankle First Aid Kit) was designed by Ryker Nylon Gear for carrying medical items concealed on your ankle. Weighing in at only 2.3 ounces the AFAK is lightweight and comfortable making it very easy to conceal not just medical items.

– Features 3 Vertical pockets for items like combat gauze, mini compression bandage, tourniquet, trauma sheers, etc
– 1 Horizontal pocket that will fit a chest seal
– Includes new elastic extension piece for full size boots

OEM Partner Interview

1. Why was the AFAK originally developed?

The AFAK (Ankle First Aid Kit) was originally designed to provide a way for my friend Chris Lapre, a Arizona law enforcement officer, to carry medical gear in a low profile manner. At the time he worked plain clothes and conducted undercover operations while assigned to a federal task force. He wanted a way to have medical gear available immediately, but still be concealed. I went home that night with a list of items (chest seal, TQ, sheers, quickclot, gloves) we potentially wanted it to hold. This produced the first two prototype AFAKs. Once we started wearing the AFAK, the design changed slightly with Chris’s feedback. We had one additional AFAK in Afghanistan within two weeks of the prototypes being made.
My family and I started making them for free to send overseas to friends and acquaintances that needed a concealed medical kit option. I never intended to start a business and sell the AFAK. It was more of a way to help out people I know in high-risk professions.

Once the demand was beyond our capabilities I decided to start a business selling the AFAK.

2. Why did Ryker choose American Made?

While we’re a small business, I hope every time we order more product from First Spear it creates a tiny economic ripple that helps support American businesses. From fabric suppliers, sewers, fabric cutters, to office staff, etc and the American economy in general.

I’ve worked in manufacturing for 17 years and have personally seen the effects of what’s happened to people and communities due to outsourcing over seas.

American Made was the only way we were going to produce the product. Going overseas wasn’t an option.

3. How did the relationship between FS and Ryker begin (or how did you hear about us) and Why did Ryker ultimately choose FirstSpear manufacturing?

Our original local manufacturer went out of business right after our first year of business. We decided we had enough business to support First Spear manufacturing the AFAK. Chris Lapre who the AFAK was originally designed for, put me in touch with friend Ronnie Fowlkes.

We were only interested in American manufacturing that we knew could produce the best product for our customers. A good percentage of our customers work in high risk professions and depend on our product to carry critical medical gear. We needed a manufacturer that could produce a product that would last in austere conditions.

With a strong manufacturing background I was specifically interested in the quality of manufacturing that First Spear offers. These include Non Destructive Marking, laser cut fabric, etc. These practices make for a much higher quality, durable product in the end for my customers.

4. Any new product developments between Ryker and FS in the future?

Yes we are working on our next product. It will create a solution to fill a void in the vehicle medical kit arena similarly to the AFAK filling a void in the ankle medical kit market. We’re still testing it and it’ll be ready for First Spear later this year.
