Mack Defense In-Service Support Contract Extended for Canadian Medium Support Vehicle System Program

ALLENTOWN, PA (July 13, 2020) – Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has exercised the option to extend Mack Defense’s in-service and support contract for an additional five years from 2020-2025, covering more than 1,500 Medium Support Vehicle System (MSVS) Standard Military Pattern (SMP) vehicles.

“Mack Defense’s MSVS SMP vehicle systems provide critical capabilities that the Canadian Armed Forces depend on,” said David Hartzell, president, Mack Defense. “We look forward to maximizing the uptime of these vehicles as we continue to provide these support services.”

The contract covers all MSVS SMP vehicles, trailers and armored protection systems, and will enable Mack Defense to provide support services and the provision of spare parts and materials for level one and two maintenance tasks performed by the customer. Equipment requiring in-depth maintenance, such as repair and overhaul activities or warranty repairs, will be handled by a facility in the area of Quebec City, Quebec. Mack Defense will provide support by delivering spare parts to Canadian Forces Depots (CFD) in Edmonton, Alberta and Montreal, Quebec.

Mack Defense was awarded two contracts in 2015 valued at $725 million CAD by the Department of Public Works and Government Services Canada (now PSPC) on behalf of the Department of National Defense to deliver more than 1,500 8×8 MSVS SMP trucks and to provide in-service support for the fleet. The MSVS SMP is available in a number of variants, including cargo, material handling cranes, load handling systems (LHS) and mobile repair trucks (MRT).

The 1,587th and final MSVS SMP vehicle was delivered in February 2020. The program also delivered 322 trailers and 161 armored protection system cabs.

Mack Defense’s in-service support contract has been extended by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) supporting more than 1,500 Medium Support Vehicle System (MSVS) Standard Military Pattern (SMP) vehicles.

Unico Combat Waterproof by Naglev

Founded by the members of the Italian Morlin family, who have made footwear for six generations and revitalized the Garmont brand in the 90s, but left to try something new and sustainable. In fact, the company’s name is an acronym, Natural Glocal Evolution, with “glocal” denoting global and local working together.

First off, although the Unico is named a combat boot, the name is derived more from the styling than its intended use. That being said, it doesn’t mean well dressed commandos won’t be wearing these later this year. I suspect they will.

The design is very straight forward and they are only available in Black with natural accents. This high leg shoe is the result of the successful Unico which is a low top trail shoe.

It features an outer shell made of Kevlar and an inner wool sock. Due to this construction, expect a glove-like fit. The outer shell is made of a single piece of indestructible Kevlar forming a sandwich which incorporates the cable lacing, the padding and the stiffner. This also features a TPU rand.

Inside there’s the wool I mentioned, along with lycra and eco membrane for waterproofness.

The sole is natural rubber and the pattern reminds me a bit of the old Bomba sole. The footbed is crafted from leather and coconut fibers and there’s a dual-density EVA midsole. If they’re anything like the low top variant, they’re going to have a very stiff sole, akin to an approach shoe.

They utilize Men’s Euro sizing, 40-47 with half sizes. Shipping in October.

Schiebel Camcopter S-100 to Perform Coast Guard Services for European Maritime Safety Agency in Finland

Vienna, 6 July 2020 – The Finnish Border Guard will operate the CAMCOPTER® S-100 for maritime surveillance purposes. The Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) service is offered by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and will also extend to Estonia and Sweden.

The CAMCOPTER® S-100 will support the Finnish authorities in carrying out Coast Guard functions, such as search and rescue, monitoring and surveillance, ship and port security, vessel traffic, environmental protection and response, ship casualty assistance, as well as accident and disaster response. The S-100 will execute these tasks equipped with an L3 Wescam Electro-Optical / Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera gimbal, an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch, a Becker Avionics BD406 Emergency Beacon Locator and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver.

EMSA awarded the multi-year maritime surveillance contract for a Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) RPAS to Schiebel in November 2018. In execution of this contract, Schiebel provides simultaneous maritime surveillance services to several EU member states and EU bodies. Currently, the CAMCOPTER® S-100 is also operational in the Republic of Croatia supporting the Maritime Safety Directorate of the Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia.

Walk for the Wounded

Walk for the Wounded is a fundraiser for Wounded Warriors Canada which is an organization founded to honor and support Canada’s ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces members, Veterans, First Responders and their families.

The walk will be completed by a team of four, consisting of either veteran or active duty members of the Canadian Infantry.

On August 8th, they will begin their trek from CFB Petawawa, to Parliament Hill in Ottawa, then finishing at the National War Memorial which is a distance of roughly 168 km. It will be accomplished in one continuous walk. In addition, every hour on the hour, the team will do 22 push-ups in honour of project22.
