A Single-Source Solution for OEM Pistol Barrels

Menomonee Falls, WI (January 15, 2026) – Vortakt Barrel Works announced an advancement in its manufacturing capabilities with the installation of a new Okuma 5-axis machine that enables the company to produce fully finished pistol barrels for OEM firearm manufacturers.

Building on its established production of pistol barrel blanks and semi-finished “lollipops”, Vortakt can now provide OEMs with a streamlined, single-source solution for finished barrels. The investment reflects Vortakt’s ongoing commitment to manufacturing technology, operational excellence, and its “OEM Promise”.

“One of our goals has always been to expand our offerings in ways that align with our OEM customers’ requirements and finishing preferences,” said Chad Weister, Managing Director. “By adding 5-axis machining, we can now deliver fully finished pistol barrels that meet our customers’ precise design requirements while also supporting the operational efficiency they depend on.”

Key Advantages of the New Capability

• Fully finished pistol barrels are now available to OEM firearm manufacturers

• Precision 5-axis machining for finishing operations to customers’ exact specifications and drawings

• Seamless progression from barrel blanks, semi-finished “lollipops”, and finished barrels

• Reduced lead times by consolidating barrel finishing that would otherwise require outsourcing or internal secondary operations

The addition of this Okuma 5-axis machine further positions Vortakt as a high-capacity, forward-looking partner for both established and emerging OEM firearm manufacturers.

“This investment elevates the depth of our machining and finishing capabilities,” added Weister. “OEMs can now rely on Vortakt for more of their barrel needs, supported by the same consistency, accuracy, and service they have come to expect. Investments like this ensure we stay the first choice for OEM firearm manufacturers.”

Latvia Orders Rheinmetall Ammunition Factory – Group Expands Global Ammunition Production Network

Monday, September 29th, 2025

Rheinmetall is further expanding its ammunition production capacity and is now planning to build a modern production facility for 155 mm calibre artillery ammunition in Latvia. In the presence of Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silia, a corresponding Memorandum of Understanding was signed today in Hamburg. The facility shall be operated by a joint venture between Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH (51%) and the Latvian State Defence Corporation, LLC of Latvia (49%). The key points were documented in a memorandum of understanding, which was signed by representatives of both sides.

By establishing its own 155 mm ammunition production facility, Latvia is taking a further step towards strengthening its defence capabilities and expanding its independent defence sector. The produced ammunition is to ensure supplies for the National Armed Forces of Latvia, as well as strengthen security of supply chains and be available to partner countries.

The production line will feature a state-of-the-art production facility, including a shell forging and filling line. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring of 2026, with production expected to start around a year later. The €275 million investment will enable the facility to produce tens of thousands of artillery shells and create at least 150 local jobs. Regional companies and the domestic economy will be integrated into the facility’s value chain.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Sili?a said: “Signing this MoU is a clear step towards strengthening Latvia’s security and developing our defence industry. By aiming to establish partnership with Rheinmetall Latvia not only builds stronger national defence, but also contributes to security of supply in Europe, enhancing industrial capacity as well as facilitating economic growth. I have been directly involved in this process because I believe that investing in our defence industry is investing in the safety and future of our people.”

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG: “We are delighted to be able to contribute to Latvia’s national sovereignty in the field of ammunition. At the same time, the production line will strengthen our position as the world’s leading manufacturer of artillery ammunition. At Rheinmetall, we are committed to supporting our customers as a reliable partner with first-class services. I am confident that we will also build similar partnerships for ammunition production in other countries”.

Ingrida Kirse, Board Member of the State Defence Corporation: “With the utmost sense of responsibility, we are taking on the entrusted task of jointly establishing an artillery ammunition production facility in Latvia. I am confident that all the necessary conditions are in place, as this project brings together several essential components. On the one hand, the mission of the State Defence Corporation is to ensure the needs of the National Armed Forces and to foster the development of Latvia’s defence industry by developing manufacturing capacity. On the other hand, Rheinmetall contributes its longstanding expertise, accumulated know-how, high standards, and international recognition. This synergy forms the foundation of a strong partnership that will both advance the industry and strengthen the security of Latvia and the wider region.”

It was only at the end of 2024 that Rheinmetall was commissioned by Latvia’s neighboring Lithuania to build a modern ammunition production facility for artillery shells. Construction of the plant, which is set to begin in a few weeks at the Baisogala site in the heart of Lithuania, mirrors the size and design to the facility planned for Latvia.

Tobyhanna Army Depot’s First Drone Shipment Takes Flight

Thursday, September 11th, 2025

TOBYHANNA, Pa. — Tobyhanna Army Depot is playing a pivotal role in the Department of Defense’s quest for battlefield superiority.

The organization successfully completed its first delivery of first-person view small uncrewed aircraft systems, commonly referred to as sUAS, on Aug. 28, marking a significant milestone in advancing its mission to enhance readiness for America’s warfighters.

The Army and DOD’s transformation initiatives seek to facilitate a leaner and more agile Army through development of modernized UAS/sUAS capabilities, as highlighted in the memo titled “Unleashing U.S. Military Drone Dominance.” In it, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth described drones as “the biggest battlefield innovation in a generation.”

Led by the Army Materiel Command, this collaborative effort leverages the unique capabilities of multiple Army organizations, including the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command. Rock Island Arsenal’s Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center provides 3D-printed airframes, while Tobyhanna Army Depot provides essential logistics and electronics expertise to complete the integration of sUAS systems.

Those leading the initiative describe it as a thrilling and transformative period for Team Tobyhanna.

“We are excited to seize the opportunity to integrate and ship cutting-edge drones to units across the United States. This effort stands to transform the landscape and future of the organic industrial base, positioning Tobyhanna at the forefront of innovation and readiness for our nation’s defense,” said Steven Wiltz, a logistics management specialist supporting the emerging mission.

Depot Commander Col. Benjamin L. Kilgore agreed, noting the importance of the accomplishment.

“This new mission is an opportunity for Tobyhanna Army Depot to support the Army’s readiness needs of today, evolve our capabilities, and align with the future of the force,” he said.

Tobyhanna has a robust history of support for DOD UAS systems. The organization has supported the MQ-9 Reaper since the 2010s through public-private partnerships with L3 Harris and General Atomics. The experience gained supporting those workloads have created a strong foundation for this new effort, according to sUAS Project Manager Christopher Volch.

“TYAD’s longstanding support for UAS has underscored our critical role in modern warfare. From TYAD’s sustainment efforts for the United States Air Force’s MQ-9 Reaper, the depot has learned just how essential and in demand these systems are to the battlefield. The same holds true for sUAS, as seen in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, these systems are the eyes and ears at the tactical edge. That’s why TYAD has committed substantial resources to the sUAS project, with progress reflected in both its defined objectives and completed milestones,” said Volch.

Kilgore emphasized that the initial delivery is just the first step in Tobyhanna’s sUAS journey.

“In the coming years, we will establish a robust capability to produce sUAS motors and circuit card assemblies to support emerging warfighter needs for the multi-domain battlefield.”

Tobyhanna Army Depot is designated as the Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, electronics, avionics and missile guidance and control. TYAD provides cradle-to-grave lifecycle support through depot-level repair, systems integration, software and cyber engineering, and field support. A key enabler of operational readiness for Joint and Allied Forces globally, TYAD leverages new and emerging technologies to further expand the Department of Defense’s organic capabilities for microelectronics, secure communications infrastructure, unmanned aerial systems, Joint All-Domain Command and Control, Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD), and the Army’s Next Generation Combat Systems. TYAD’s ability to rapidly surge production, deploy field support teams, and scale for contingency or theater-level operations makes it a vital contributor to strategic readiness and operational reach.
