Mountainsmith x The Real Hiking Viking – 2021 Zerk 40 Backpack

Wednesday, May 12th, 2021

I purchased the Zerk 40 when it was first introduced a few years ago on Indiegogo. Co-designed with The Real Hiking Viking, a renowned thru-hiker with thousands of hiking miles under his belt, it offers 40 L of lightweight load carriage.

Overall, the 2021 version is functionally the same. The biggest change from that first model is new materials. They’ve switched to 210D Extrema nylon and 100D nylon x span 840D stretch mesh.

It features a roll-top closure with SR buckles for security with a single strap over the top to help control the load. That strap is also long enough to stow a bear canister. Inside, a removable laser cut frame sheet (EVA Atilon) allows for rigidity and airflow.

The outside features five mesh pockets, dual pockets on either side for water bottles or snacks, and a large rear pocket. Bag size adjustments can be made at either side via a diagonal strapping system as well as via the bungee cord at the rear.

The harness is very comfortable with wide padded straps which almost form a vest front. There are two mesh pockets on either strap as well as a sternum strap with integrated whistle. The removable waist strap is just that, a strap, rather than a full hip belt normally found in packs, but the pack is intended for lightweight through hiking.

You can see the full features here:

I have configured the Zerk 40 as my “get home” bag and it accompanied me on every road trip. The colors are subdued enough to not stick out but also not look like a walking surplus store.

In addition to the new garments we’ve showcased over this week, Sitka Arrowhead Equipment is also offering a few accessories and load carriage which fans of the hunting side will be familiar with. By load carriage, we’re not talking assault vests, but rather day packs and duffels.

The Gunner Glove incorporates Gore-Tex Windstopper technology paired with Leather and a Stretch Woven Trigger Finger. Coyote in color.

The Gunner Glove is made in Vietnam so it is not TAA compliant for those of you who take that into consideration in buying decisions.

For load carriage, there’s the Drifter Travel Pack and Duffel.

The Pack and Duffel are made from TPU coated ripstop. The 25L Travel Pack is available in Lead and Coyote. The Duffels are offered in 50L, 75L and 110L sizes but only in Lead color.

The load carriage items are all TAA compliant, having been manufactured in the Philippines.

There is also some cool logo wear like T-shirts and Hats.

Granite Gear – Perimeter 50

Tuesday, April 20th, 2021

Granite Gear’s Perimeter 50 is a unisex pack, designed to fit a wide variety of body types.

Although the pack is offered in Regular Torso (18″ – 21″) and Long Torso (21″-24″) versions, suspension Shoulder Width Adjustments with regular and wide settings along with Vertical adjustments are possible via the daisy-chained webbing at the frame.

Even more interesting is that Granite Gear will replace the standard size Re-Fit waist belt with a larger model (36″ – 52″) simply by asking customer service. Both waist belts integrate zippered pockets.

Speaking of pockets, the are side and front stretch pockets on the pack body. The top features a cinch-and-roll closure with crossing webbing straps to compress and secure the pack’s contents as well as a removable lid flap. At the bottom end of this 50 liter pack is a flap for sleeping pad storage which also incorporates a zippered pocket for storing a rainfly.

The Perimeter Suspension systems consists of a Spring Steel rod outline with PE sheet core to give the pack a 40 lbs load rating.

One way overall pack weight is kept under control is the use of Robic high tenacity nylon (100D and custom 210D).

What’s more, SSD readers should like the Green and Brown colorway.

Hill People Gear – Type I Pack

Saturday, April 10th, 2021

Some of Hill People Gear’s brand DNA comes from wildland firefighting. Co-founder Evan Hill used a jumper pack on the Wyoming Hotshots back when they were still made in the Rigger’s Loft by smokejumpers. When he started building packs, they were belted lumbars like the jumper pack. In fact, the Umlindi follows that lumbar pack tradition.

Kevin McDowell, is a Marine and wildland fire veteran who joined HPG initially as their Operations Manager and now serves as Marketing Director. He has been driving the company to create a fire pack. The resulting Type I Pack is based on the Umlindi V2.

The Type 1 Pack is sold as a complete system. It consists of the following components, which can also be purchased separately:

Base Pack – The Type 1 Pack is based on the Umlindi V2 Backpack. However, the side compression straps from the standard Umlindi have been removed.

Line Pocket – The Line Pocket is a simple compression pocket and side pull compression straps that is sized specifically to work with the Umlindi.

Fire Shelter Case – The Fire Shelter Case can be set up for right or left hand shelter deployment. It attaches underneath the base pack and also to the Line Pocket to raise the rear edge and keep the shelter from resting on the firefighter’s bottom.

Prairie Belt – HPG’s most robust load bearing belt is included in the system. By default the Type 1 Pack ships with the 30+ Prairie Belt, but substitutions for other sizes are possible.

The Type-1 Wildland Fire Pack, like all Hill People Gear products, is 100% made in the USA.
