Red Sands III Exercise in Saudi Arabia: Rheinmetall Canada Demonstrates Its Drone Defence Capabilities at Ultra-Short Ranges

Wednesday, December 18th, 2024

A Rheinmetall system for combating drones at ultra-close range has demonstrated its effectiveness in a joint exercise with representatives of the U.S. Army Central Command and the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces. The Red Sands III exercise took place in September 2024 at the Shamal 2 firing range in north-eastern Saudi Arabia and focused on countering uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS).

The multinational exercise provided a challenging environment for assessing C-UAS solutions. At the same time, it enabled technology developers and operational personnel to work together to close capability gaps. The exercise was preceded by successful qualification tests, which took place in the United States in the summer of 2024.

Designed as the last line of defence against small low-flying and fast-moving drones, Rheinmetall’s ultra Short-Range Air Defence (SHORAD) system offers an engagement range from 50 to 800 m. The Mission Master XT uncrewed ground system (UGS) serves as the carrier platform.

Developed by Rheinmetall Canada, the system consists of the Rheinmetall Fieldranger Multi remote-controlled weapon station with a twin Dillon Aero M134D minigun, a radar, an electronic optics package and an artificial intelligence (AI)-based target acquisition and tracking system. This advanced layered defence system is capable of engaging multiple threats with formidable fire power. It offers multi-domain capabilities that execute with precision when detecting, tracking and engaging aerial and ground threats.

Strong performance despite harsh desert conditions

In the final phase of Red Sands III, five challenging scenarios were set up to simulate real-world threats. In all scenarios, participants’ capabilities were assessed against Group 2 and 3 multi-rotor drones as well as Group 3 fixed-wing aircraft. Rheinmetall’s ultra SHORAD system demonstrated superior capabilities, scoring hits on all drones and successfully neutralizing every multirotor drone on the first pass. This performance was only matched by Rheinmetall and participants with costly advanced missile systems.

Even under the extreme conditions of the Saudi Arabian desert – where temperatures sometimes reached up to 45 °C – Rheinmetall’s ultra SHORAD system excelled thanks to its rapid operational readiness and its resistance to weapon interference, overheating and interruptions to the power supply. Earlier exercises at Fort Drum NY, USA, also demonstrated the system’s resilience in high humidity and heavy rain. Another outstanding feature is the system’s AI-driven tracker, which detects and classifies drones long before they are engaged, even in dusty conditions and poor visibility.
In addition to its operational success, Rheinmetall’s system proved to be extremely efficient. With a low cost per engagement, it represents a sustainable and economical solution.

A benchmark for the future development of CUAS

The exercise – an example of the partnership between the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces and U.S. Army Central Command – provided a valuable platform for assessing and refining systems in real-world scenarios. “We are proud to have played a critical role in enhancing operational readiness and fostering innovation to effectively counter emerging threats,” said Alain Tremblay, Vice-President Business Development and Innovation at Rheinmetall Canada. Rheinmetall’s performance at Red Sands III underscores the company’s leadership in providing reliable, adaptable and cost-effective solutions that meet the evolving requirements of modern defence operations worldwide.

Revision Successfully Resolves Legacy Legal Issue

Tuesday, December 17th, 2024

December 17, 2024

Essex Junction, Vermont (for immediate release) – Revision Military Ltd. (Revision), a world leader in purpose-built ballistic and laser eye protection for military and tactical use, is pleased to announce that it has successfully resolved a legacy legal issue in cooperation with the U.S. government.

In September 2019, Revision’s protective eyewear business was acquired by a new ownership group.  Revision’s new ownership and management team later learned that allegations had been made before the acquisition regarding compliance with certain government contractingrequirements, and that the government initiated an investigation into such matters.  The allegations and investigation pertained to domestic sourcing requirements fortextile materials used for pouches, carrying cases, and strapsthat are accessories to some Revision eyewear productsduring the period January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2020.  The investigation did not implicate performance offunctional eyewear components such as lenses or frames, which are assembled in our state-of-the-art manufacturing clean room in Vermont.  Revision’s new management team cooperated closely with the government and is happy to report that it has now resolved all matters related to thisinvestigation. At no point during this process and post settlement has there been any impact on Revision’s ability to sell to the US Military directly or indirectly.

The government alleged that certain historical eyewear purchases did not comply with the Berry Amendment because (i) carrying pouches, (ii) cases, and/or (iii) straps contained textiles that were not grown, reprocessed, reused, or produced in the United States.  Revision expressly denied liability and contended, among other things, that to the extent the transactions at issue were for purchases of $150,000 or less, the Berry Amendment by its terms did not apply at all. Revision also contended that there were no damages to the government because the eyewear products performed as intended.  Rather than litigate these issues, Revision and the government agreed to resolve the matter amicably.

The legacy legal issues underlying the investigation and settlement pertained to historical sales as many as nine years ago. Revision takes such compliance issues seriously, even when they are historical. In this spirit, the settlement agreement formally documents the government crediting Revision’s new ownership and management team for self-initiating improved compliance measures, for replacing former employees who were responsible for overseeing such compliance issues, and for cooperating with the government investigation.

* * *

Beyond the specific issues resolved in the settlement, we understand that Revision users expect our eyewear to protect them and get them home safely. We take this to heart from the beginning of the product life-cycle to the end and reaffirm that this duty to our users, the men and women who stand for us all, is always at the forefront of our minds. Revision’s enhanced and comprehensive compliance program is designed to promote compliance across allapplicable contracting requirements.  We want all our customers to know that the Revision brand represents quality, reliability, and integrity.

Revolutionizing the Battlefield: How Lighter Ammo Saves Troops’ Lives and Reduces Casualties

Monday, December 16th, 2024

Shell Shock Technologies’ lighter-weight ammunition is setting a new standard for military efficiency, cost savings, and life-saving innovations. By embracing cutting-edge design, the company is helping to redefine the future of combat readiness.

Eubank, KY (December 2024) – Shell Shock Technologies, LLC, (SST), a leading innovator in the ammunition industry, has released groundbreaking findings that demonstrate how its lighter-weight ammunition can save lives and enhance military efficiency. The analysis highlights the significant benefits of a 30 percent reductionin ammunition weight, including fewer troop casualties, improved combat readiness, and substantial cost savings.

Weight Reduction: Saving Lives and Reducing Casualties

Combat Casualty Reduction: A 30 percent reduction in ammunition weight can directly impact battlefield survival rates. For a 13-member Marine Rifle Squad engaging an enemy of four (4) in a defensive position, rushing across 100 meters of rough desert terrain, a 15 lb. weight reduction for troops can save lives – “it can reduce squad casualties from 8.9 to 3.5.” Ammunition is 8 lbs. per troop, so a 30 percent reduction is 2.4 lbs., or 16 percent of the weight reduction targeted – in essence saving about one troop per engagement. This is based on over 885,000 simulations.

Enhanced Mobility: Lighter ammunition enables soldiers to carry more rounds without increasing their load, boosting mobility and agility on the battlefield. This improved efficiency allows for faster deployment and reduced physical strain.

Reduced Fatigue: With less weight to carry, troops experience less fatigue, which significantly enhances endurance and operational effectiveness during high-stress missions.

Operational Efficiency: Streamlined Logistics and Cost Savings

Increased Transport Capacity: Shell Tech’s lighter ammunition reduces the need for every fourth vehicle in transport convoys, enabling fewer shipments and lowering fuel consumption. For instance, traditional .50 caliber ammunition requires 10 pallets per vehicle, whereas lighter ammo accommodates 14 pallets per vehicle.

Aircraft Fuel Savings: A 30 percent weight reduction in ammunition payloads translates to a 9–15 percent savings in fuel costs per mission. For the U.S. military, this equates to over $1.16 billion in annual savings based on 200,000 aircraft missions.

Maintenance Reduction: The reduced weight lessens wear and tear on weapon systems, transportation vehicles, and aircraft, resulting in significant long-term maintenance savings.

Combat Readiness: Empowering Troops on the Battlefield

Improved Safety and Endurance: Lightweight ammunition decreases the risk of injuries related to carrying heavy equipment, such as back and joint problems. Healthier and less fatigued troops are better prepared to execute their missions effectively.

Enhanced Efficiency: By reducing combat load weight, troops gain the ability to carry additional supplies or critical equipment, improving readiness for a variety of combat scenarios.

Growing Military Interest and Scaling for Success

Both the U.S. military and allied forces are taking notice of Shell Shock’s groundbreaking advancements. This case technology has been part of winning solutions for lightweight, highly accurate ammunition with increased projectile velocities in multiple Requests for Proposals (RFPs) completed by the U.S. military over the past few years. Military testing has been extremely successful, although specific programs remain undisclosed due to ongoing NDAs.

The company disclosed that it has received multiple Indications of Interest (IOIs) for 7.62 rifle and machine gun rounds, worth over $200 million. As a result, Shell Shock will need to scale rapidly and is currently in discussions with several large defense contractors to partner with the company.

While the company serves military customers, Shell Shock recently released its Shell Tech ammo line, which is available to the civilian market. This ammunition is sold direct from its factory and shipped to customers, enabling the company to offer military-grade ammo at a cost comparable to traditional brass-cased ammunition.

A Pioneering Step Forward

“Shell Shock Technologies is committed to providing our armed forces with innovative solutions that not only enhance mission success but also protect the lives of those who serve,” said Peter Foss, CEO of Shell Shock Technologies. “Our lighter-weight ammunition not only saves weight and money but most importantly reduces casualties among U.S. troops.”

INVISIO and U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) Advancing Wireless Tactical Communications Through Customer Collaboration

Monday, December 16th, 2024

Initial test orders of 3.5 MUSD received.

A cooperation between INVISIO and the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has showcased the benefits of co-development when it comes to developing tactical communications solutions for military operators at speed, resulting in the INVISIO Link™ solution.

INVISIO worked with DIU, which in turn collaborated with a customer within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, on a Wireless Crew project to provide integrated wireless communication capabilities using INVISIO’s market-leading technology.

The combination of DIU’s ‘customer collaboration’ concept and INVISIO’s values of innovation and customer first approach ensured an agile initial scoping process as well as iterative prototyping.

The project resulted in the delivery of a wireless communications solution to the customer, enabling multiple crewmen to utilize multiple vehicle mounted radios in varying environments (maritime, land, and air), without traditional hardwire connections and the limitations often associated with wired comms solutions.

Initial scoping not only covered the specific project but outlined requirements for the entire solution. From this INVISIO developed a wireless intercom solution, INVISIO Link™, that combined with the existing body-worn communication system, delivered a solution. This was achieved through two years of iterative and incremental feedback from multiple operational uses and challenges.

Jacob Tranegaard, Director Intercom Product Management at INVISIO, said: “This project is groundbreaking for so many reasons and allowed us to speed up the process, taking this project from conceptual phase to publicly announced product in less than 24 months.

“The collaboration with the end customer facilitated through DIU meant we could work through the design and scoping phase in an open environment, producing the first-ever INVISIO project that involved government stakeholders in the scoping phase of a development project.”

Working with DIU allowed INVISIO to undertake evaluation events and prototypes, speeding up the testing and contracting process, as well as using DIU’s input to expand and understand the product market fit beyond the initial US Government user request. DIU also assisted INVISIO in developing its first-ever project with US Government-usable encryption levels.

The result is the creation of a modular wireless intercom solution for a variety of use cases across the US DoD, Law Enforcement and other NATO forces.

Jacob added: “With the help of DIU, we have been able to launch and market the product earlier than usual, as well as widen our target market for the product beyond the initial project.

“This project not only showcases the benefits of collaboration and our relationship with DIU, but also demonstrates the focus by INVISIO’s R&D department on innovation, teamwork and a customer-first approach.”

Pre-released to the public earlier this year, INVISIO Link™ is currently pre-selling throughout the world and for many use cases, including but not limited to small boat crews, firefighting LTVs, helicopter rescue swimmers, flight line maintenance crews, and rapid response security teams.

Following the success of collaborating with DIU, INVISIO welcomes future innovation partnerships with end users and government entities on additional INVISIO Link™ solutions, as well as future research and development on the next generation of tactical communication solutions.
