Today, Shawmut Corporation announced the creation of a new Military & Protective Materials Business Unit that will apply the company’s trademark advanced materials, textile manufacturing and process innovation techniques to produce high-quality, US-made, ultra-high-specification and high-performance technical fabric solutions. Shawmut’s military and protective solutions feature waterproof, windproof, flame-resistant and chemical and biological protection applications and are ideal for high-stakes usages required in military and in-the-field professionals who need high-performance gear to safely do their jobs.

This new Military & Protective Materials Business Unit is a natural extension of Shawmut’s 105-year history in advanced materials manufacturing and builds upon the company’s deep experience in high-performance materials innovation, design and manufacturing expertise. Dating back to World War I, Shawmut has been supplying engineered materials and garments for critical military applications. The new division positions Shawmut as a catalyst for change and innovation in this highly specialized industry in need of advancements.

To lead the development of this new business unit, Shawmut has hired Noelle Christensen, a seasoned leader in the military and high-performance protective materials industry with more than 20 years of supply chain and business development experience. Noelle brings a diverse perspective and wealth of knowledge across textile manufacturing, domestic and federal garment supply chain, business development, operations and innovation to Shawmut. As the leader of this new business unit, she will position the company as a key provider of innovative textile technology for high performance applications, with a focus on military and protective materials.

Prior to joining Shawmut, Noelle spent 14 years at Massif, a developer of advanced flame-resistant clothing for military and other high-performance applications. Most recently, she served as Massif’s VP/GM where she led the brand through exponential growth as it launched new textile innovations and high-performance clothing categories.

“As a previous customer of Shawmut, I bring a unique perspective to the team, having witnessed its engineers solving seemingly unsolvable problems,” said Christensen. “I am excited about how much more Shawmut has to offer than the market is aware of, such as our ability to quickly solve complex problems and test products on the fly for rapid innovation, and our dedication to quality control that ensures premium, consistent outputs for our customers. The commitment the company is making to sustainability initiatives while expanding our presence in this market is a natural extension of its core expertise learned in another exacting market vertical – automotive.”

Team Federal’s Tim Herron Having Successful Season, Wins Major USPSA Match

Sunday, June 13th, 2021

ANOKA, Minnesota – June 8, 2021 –  With shooting competitions for 2021 having gotten nearly back to normal after a year-long hiatus, Team Federal shooter Tim Herron has had a fantastic year so far in Single Stack division. He recently claimed a major win when he grabbed the top spot at the USPSA Northern Arizona Classic, held in Prescott, Arizona, with a lead of more than 17 percentage points.

“Tim is one of those shooters who has a legitimate chance to win any match he enters,” said Federal Shooting Sports Promotions Manager Jason Spradling. “The Northern Arizona Classic is a major USPSA match and always has a stacked field of competitors. To beat the rest of the shooters in his division by nearly 18 percent is a huge accomplishment. We’re proud to celebrate this win with Tim.”

“The stages at Northern Arizona Classic were spectacular with many options and multiple ways to execute your stage plans,” Herron said. “Shooting an 8-round 1911 on many of these courses of fire really challenged many in Single Stack division and we had to figure out how to efficiently shoot the stages.”

In Arizona, Herron was running a Nighthawk Custom 1911 loaded with 230-grain .45 ACP Federal American Eagle FMJ ammunition.

“In a major competition like this one, you can literally lose the match with just one gun malfunction,” Spradling said. “Your equipment, including your ammo, has to run without fail every time. Tim knows he can depend on Federal ammo to get the job done and we’re always honored to have such a fierce competitor showing the community how well our products perform.”

“I want to give a heartfelt thank you to Federal Ammunition for their continued support of my efforts, both in competition, and in my profession as a firearms instructor and educator,” Herron said.

Earlier in the season, Herron took 10th place overall in Single Stack division at the 2021 USPSA LoCap Nationals in Talladega, Alabama. For that match, his pistol was loaded with 220-grain .45 ACP Federal American Eagle Syntech ammunition.

“Talladega was my first match of the season and I feel good about the finish I had. It was significant and also solidifies my place to compete in the ‘Super Squad’ again next year,” Herron said.

Zenith AeroTech Keeps Tethered Aerial Vehicle Aloft for 108 Hours of Continuous Flight

Friday, June 11th, 2021

Record-breaking flight demonstrates capacity for true persistent surveillance, counter-drone measures

AFTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Zenith AeroTech, a leading developer of heavy-lift tethered aerial vehicles (TAVs), announced that, over the span of a week, its Quad 8 multi-rotor platform flew a total of 161 hours and 49 minutes—108 hours of which were continuous, uninterrupted flight.

In doing so, the TAV far exceeded the capabilities of competing tethered drones and demonstrated its ability to serve as a long-endurance platform for persistent surveillance.

“Small, multirotor-type drones are notorious for their limited air endurance. By contrast, tethered aerial vehicles, which draw power from a generator on the ground, can stay aloft for hours at a stretch,” said Kutlay Kaya, CEO of Zenith AeroTech. “But no other TAV company has ever been able to fly a platform for as long as we just did. This is a major technological breakthrough for small unmanned systems.”

The test, which took place over a seven-day period at the company’s facility in Afton, was initiated at the request of a government customer prior to delivery. The Quad 8 TAV, which carried an electro-optical/infrared camera and an Echodyne EchoFlight radar, flew for most of that time, only coming down twice, during lightning storms, which had to be waited out.

“We observed all the FAA regulations for day and nighttime operation,” Kaya said. “Our team was on site around the clock, with people taking 8-hour shifts to watch the TAV and the Ground Power-Tether Management System. There were two times we had to bring down the Quad 8, but as soon as those storms subsided, the TAV was back in the air. We flew through 18 hours of light to heavy rain with wind gusts up to 40 mph.”

Zenith AeroTech recently partnered with Sydney-based DroneShield to provide enhanced drone-detection capabilities and countermeasures. In putting DroneShield’s DroneSentry-C2 command-and-control application, along with an Echodyne radar, onto a TAV, Zenith AeroTech provided a platform with a higher elevation than the standard mast. This eliminated clutter and false positives, allowing for better counter-drone detection. Now it provides extreme long-endurance too.

“By demonstrating more than 100 hours of flight time, we’ve opened up our TAV to all sorts of mission sets and customers,” Kaya said. “It’s a really very exciting.”
