ASA and Leading 2A Groups File Lawsuit Challenging the Constitutionality of the NFA

Thursday, August 7th, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Friday, August 1st, the American Suppressor Association (ASA), National Rifle Association (NRA), Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC), Prime Protection STL Tactical Boutique, and two members of the organizations filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA). The complaint, Brown v. Bondi, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.

Until President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the NFA established a $200 tax and tax-enforcement registration regime on certain classes of firearms, including suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and NFA-defined “any other weapons.” With the elimination of this excise tax in the OBBB, the joint complaint alleges that the NFA registration regime is no longer justifiable as an exercise of Congress’s taxing power, nor any other Article I power.

The lawsuit also asserts that the NFA’s registration regime for suppressors and short-barreled rifles violates the Second Amendment. The Supreme Court has established that any regulation on arms-bearing conduct must be consistent with our nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation. The complaint argues there is no tradition that supports the NFA’s registration regime for protected arms such as suppressors and short-barreled rifles.

“The National Firearms Act has been a weight around the neck of law-abiding gun owners for nearly a century,” said Knox Williams, President and Executive Director American Suppressor Association. “With the elimination of the excise tax on suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and AOWs through the One Big Beautiful Bill, our lawsuit challenges the NFA as an unconstitutional registry of now untaxed firearms. Common sense and the law are on our side, and we look forward to fighting on behalf of all Americans in Federal Court.”

“The National Firearms Act has infringed on law-abiding Americans’ right to keep and bear arms for nearly a century,” said John Commerford, Executive Director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action. “Congress took a major step by eliminating the NFA tax on suppressors and short-barreled firearms through the OBBB, and we’re proud to work alongside other leading Second Amendment organizations to finish the job.”

“The National Firearms Act’s registration scheme only exists to ensure that the tax on NFA firearms was paid,” said Adam Kraut, SAF’s Executive Director. “With Congress removing the tax on silencers, short-barreled firearms, and ‘any other weapons,’ the continued inclusion of these items in the NFA serves no purpose, except continuing to retain an impermissible hurdle to the exercise of one’s constitutional right to keep and bear arms. We look forward to relegating this unconstitutional law to the history books.”

“The National Firearms Act isn’t just unconstitutional, it’s a tyrannical abomination,” said Firearms Policy Coalition President Brandon Combs. “Not only does the NFA violate your Second Amendment rights, but Congress never had the lawful authority to pass it in the first place. That makes it a double abuse of power, violating both the right to keep and bear arms and the hard limits the Constitution places on the federal government. We’re proud to fight alongside our allies to end this corrupt, immoral law so peaceable Americans can exercise their rights when, where, and how they choose.”

Quantum Systems’ Vector UAS Added to US DoD’s Blue UAS List

Thursday, August 7th, 2025

Combat-proven, AI-powered eVTOL UAS joins select list of drones approved for U.S. government procurement and deployment

MOORPARK, Calif., Aug. 5, 2025 — Quantum Systems, a leader in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aerial intelligence solutions, today announced that its mid-range eVTOL small uncrewed aerial system (sUAS), Vector, has been added to the U.S. Department of Defense’s Blue UAS List.

The Blue UAS List, managed by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), recognizes UAS platforms that meet the U.S. government’s most rigorous standards for cybersecurity, supply chain integrity, and operational performance. Vector’s inclusion affirms its field-proven reliability, strategic relevance, and combat credibility while enabling defense and federal agencies to acquire and deploy the system without additional approvals. This streamlines procurement, shortens fielding timelines, and ensures frontline units receive access to trusted aerial intelligence faster and with fewer barriers

“This designation reflects much more than compliance,” said Dave Sharpin, CEO of Quantum-Systems Inc. “It validates the performance Vector is already delivering in the hands of U.S. and allied forces. Blue UAS approval accelerates our customers’ ability to field capability faster with full confidence in its security, resilience, and tactical relevance. For today’s warfighter, speed and trust matter. This clears the path for both.”

Already deployed by multiple U.S. government users and allied forces, Vector delivers AI-enabled, real-time ISR across dynamic and contested environments. Its modular payload architecture, edge-processing capabilities, and secure communications make it ideal for expeditionary ISR and coalition operations.

To meet growing U.S. demand and provide long-term sustainment, Quantum Systems opened a new 135,000 sq. ft. facility in June in Moorpark, California that serves as the company’s primary U.S. integration, production, and support hub. The site expands domestic capacity for delivery, training, and lifecycle support of Vector and Quantum Systems’ broader UAS portfolio, supporting global operations from U.S. soil.

OTTO unveils DARKSTAR 1 — a mobile, all-terrain command unit built for rugged environments, delivering advanced communications to the edge of operations.

Built on the Polaris Xpedition ADV 5 platform, DARKSTAR 1,OTTO’s entry into the vehicle-based systems market, integrates a configurable suite of technologies, including dual-network Cradlepoint cellular, low-earth-orbit satellite, GPS tracking (for vehicle and personnel), multi-band UHF/VHF radios, inter-team P2P links, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, and more. Zero-profile communication antenna arrays reduce exposure and preserve stealth in confined or obstructed environments.

“Our goal with DARKSTAR 1 was to extend OTTO’s legacy ofperformance into mobile command systems, delivering a compact, agile solution that gives teams a technological advantage where other solutions fail to go,” said Nick Lafferty, Tactical Systems and Solutions for OTTO Engineering.

Designed for use in all environments and high- (or low-) visibility situations, DARKSTAR 1 features the latest in digital off-road lighting from Tomar Electronics; users have full 360° control of the vehicle’s response and scene lighting. A programmable touch control panel offers the ability to customize lighting types depending on operating preferences, including a “BLACKOUT MODE,” which disables all visible light sources and switches over to IR off-road lighting/driving mode.

Enhanced visual awareness is provided by integrated EO/IR and thermal sensors, offering real-time visuals in low- or no-light conditions. Paired with the ATAK display system, operators can drive and navigate in complete darkness without helmet-mounted night vision. US Transportation Secretary Sean P Duffy Unveils Proposed Rule to Unleash American Drone Dominance as Part of His Innovation Agenda

Thursday, August 7th, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy unveiled a new proposed rule– Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS). This rule will unleash American innovation safely integrate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the national airspace system.

For more information about the proposed rule, see our fact sheet.

“We are making the future of our aviation a reality and unleashing American drone dominance. From drones delivering medicine to unmanned aircraft surveying crops, this technology will fundamentally change the way we interact with the world,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “Our new rule will reform outdated regulations that were holding innovators back while also enhancing safety in our skies. Thanks to President Trump, America – not China – will lead the way in this exciting new technology.”

Previously, operators would have to get individual waivers or exemptions to use their drones without visual line of sight. These were approved on a case-by-case basis, and the process was cumbersome. By eliminating these requirements for BVLOS operations, the proposal will significantly expand the use-case for drone technologies in areas like: manufacturing, farming, energy production, filmmaking, and the movement of products including lifesaving medications.

“Normalizing BVLOS flights is key to realizing drones’ societal and economic benefits,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. “Package delivery, agriculture, aerial surveying, public safety, recreation, and flight testing are just some of the uses we expect to see as we enable these innovative technologies while maintaining the safety of our National Airspace System.”

“Today’s NPRM is a bold, forward-looking step that helps unlock the full potential of BVLOS drone operations, transforming how we monitor infrastructure, deliver critical supplies, advance precision agriculture, and speed up emergency response. Under President Trump’s leadership, we are giving innovators a predictable, scalable pathway to conduct BVLOS missions, to ensure that the United States remains the global leader in drone technology. We look forward to public comment on this critical rulemaking,” said Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The proposal also includes updated requirements for manufacturers, operators, and drone traffic-management services to keep BVLOS drones safely separated from each other and from manned aircraft.

Additional Information:

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is a partner in developing this rule.

The FAA encourages people to submit comments in the Federal Register. The comment period will be open for 60 days following publication and will not be extended.
