Warrior West – Opening Address – Lt Gen John Toolan

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

The opening address for this year’s Warrior Expo West is by Lieutenant General John A Toolan, I MEF Commanding General.

“The Marine Corps is a hedge against uncertainty. The mantra? No more Benghazis.”

Lieutenant General John A Toolan, USMC
Commanding General, I MEF

General Toolan’s overall remarks were about anticipating change and industry’s part in this. In particular he discussed four major factors facing our forces:

Globalization
Urbanization
Litoralization
Networks

He shared that he is concerned with the cyber threat, instability in nation states and the trend that we face rogue states and maligned actors.

General Toolan feels that there will be no ‘peace dividend’ after the conclusion of the Afghanistan conflict and that we should be wary of letting our guard down post bellum. He asserts that we need to be prepared to “play all nine innings” in a conflict and not stop at the bottom of the seventh, declaring victory.

He’s a Marine through and through and recognizes that the USMC will be downsizing but remains confident that Marine Corps will be well positioned to undertake any missions they are given. He stated that the United States must maintain a global presence and not focus on one theater over another. Forward presence remains the best deterrence of aggression. Forward Presence also helps America to maintain relationships so that America can work with partners in future conflicts. General Toolan also looks to leverage SOF relationships to support those coalition partnerships.

He states that we need to get better at transitions such as from major US combat to the retrograde of US material and to coalition and host nation led operations. So far, the Marine Corps has returned over $1 billion worth of equipment to the US. However, he feels that the transition of excess equipment to Afghan forces is critical and steps have been taken to ensure that they develop a system to accept and maintain the gear.

Interestingly, the Marine Corps turns over about 33,000 Marines a year. General Toolan discussed this explaining that a lot of combat experience has left the Marines. It’s not a concern, just a fact that they must deal with. But he does see the Marines undertaking a mental transition of the force from a combat focus to more traditional roles and assuming duties that have been outsourced over the last 12 years. He explained that there are things that Marine Corps needs to do mentally and spiritually to make this transition happen. He is impressed with the leadership of his Marines in combat and wants to see that same level of engagement in garrison.

Lt General Toolan is a very interesting speaker and I appreciate his forthrightness in the face of a changing defense environment. I’d say he is very in tune with his Marine Corps. However, he continued the current meme of “excess” being bad for the Marines. But his perspective isn’t that the increased defense spending of this war as being bad for Marines that we seem to see being popularized in the press. Rather he sees that it has caused a decrease in accountability of equipment. As a former leader and taxpayer, I can’t say that I disagree.

Warrior Expo – Duckworth

Monday, March 10th, 2014

Thanks to the guys at DriFire, I had a chance to check out a new line of clothing made from American wool. Look for more on this exciting brand soon.

Duckworth

The benefits of wool are well known; warm even when wet, naturally anti-microbial and no-melt no-drip. Plus, in this case, it’s grown, processed and manufactured right here in the USA.

Warrior Expo – Watershed

Monday, March 10th, 2014

Watershed has been producing the SOF Waterproof Bag System in both SEAL and SWCC variants. The SEAL version consists of 5 bags and the SWC version, just 3. Fairly recently, the NSW had Watershed update the kits.

First up, they’ve updated the Large Pack Cover to the Kodiak V2. The waterproof zipper now runs North/South making it easier to get into and these will now be stocked at SOFSA and can be requisitioned by authorized users in conjunction with a Granite Gear Chief Patrol Pack.

Kodiak Ver 2

This is the new liner for the issue 3-Day Assault Pack by Mystery Ranch. It integrates a roll top closure and inflation tube. In fact, inflation tubes are standard on the entire set.

3-DAP Liner

The new addition is a Mil-Spec version of the popular Ocoee waterproof duffel. It integrates belt loops and can be worn in front, around the waist, for water jump ops.

Additionally, they have updated the Pro-Mask Bag to accommodate the M53 Mask/ It retains the drop leg carry strap.

Warrior Expo – Mobile Fitness Equipment

Monday, March 10th, 2014

I remember attending a trade show 10 years ago and seeing the TRX which is a compact workout kit many in the military now deploy with for use in areas with no gun facilities Then, last week, I ran across this black 8′ x 8′ x 8′ shipping container at last week’s Emerald Coast Warrior Expo near Hurlburt Field, Florida. It brings deployable fitness to a whole new level.

The crew set up the self contained Mobile Fitness Unit in a matter of minutes.

MFU Winch

The sides are raised and lowered via an electric winch and cable. A small generator powers the winch as well as electric lights when shore power is unavailable.

MFU Rack

Everything is then easily into place.

MFU 1

While this model was mounted to a trailer (they towed it all the way from their hometown of Boston to Destin, FL), you can easily pick it up and put it down wherever you like, just like other shipping containers.

It literally looks like a gym once it’s fully deployed and serves as a great focal point for deployed fitness.

The Mobile Fitness Unit I saw was fully outfitted with a variety of free weights and Olympic barbells along with Kettlebells, Ropes, Medicine Balls and Gymnastic rings. I also noticed several TRX mounted to the pull up bars which brought this whole thing full circle for me. Ten years ago I picked up a couple of TRX for some teams I was supporting that deployed around Afghanistan. If I were still doing that for a living, I’d certainly take a look at the Mobile Fitness Unit for my deployed troops.

Warrior Expo – RANGER HIPPO

Monday, March 10th, 2014

Coming Summer 2014, the Ranger Hippo is a collaboration between Polaris Defense and Mobile Hydraulic Equipment Company to produce a lightweight, all-terrain, alternative for the maintenance contact vehicle in order to access remote worksites.

Power
• Hydraulic power-fully adjustable 0-10 gpm @ 2000 psi hydraulic tool circuit (one outlet)
• Air power- 50 cfm @ 100 psi (three outlets)

Warrior Expo – Belleville / Tactical Research

Thursday, March 6th, 2014

Belleville recently added a new boot to their Tactical Research line called the MINI-Mil Transition boot.

20140305-202920.jpg

Last year, Tactical Research unveiled the MINI-Mil boot, inspired by popular minimalist running shoes. It only features a 2mm heel to to drop making it a very flat boot. FR folks who aren’t used to barefoot running, this was a bit too much so TR came up with this new model. The MINI-Mil Transition offers a 6mm heel to toe drop which feels more “natural” for those wearing traditional combat boots. It remains a lightweight boot at 15.5 oz per pair. However, whereas the MINI-Mil features an unlined upper, the Transition model incorporates Aero-Spacer breathable, hydrophilic mesh lining. Additionally, this 8″ high boot is AR 670-1 compliant. Offered in Tan and Coyote, full sizes 6-14 (R&W) and half-sizes 6.5-11.5 (R&W).
