Lipsey’s Partners with Langdon Tactical on New Heckler & Koch USP Exclusive

April 20th, 2023

Baton Rouge, LA —Lipsey’s, a nationally renowned firearms distributor, launched its latest exclusive, the Heckler & Koch (HK) USP with Langdon Tactical custom RDO optics cut and trigger enhancement package.

Lipsey’s newest exclusive arrives by way of collaboration between Lipsey’s Vice President and Product Development Manager, Jason Cloessner, and Langdon Tactical President, Ernest Langdon. A conversation began between the two regarding the admiration and popularity of the USP along with some of its challenges. Though iconic and notoriously durable, HK’s USP lacks one of today’s most sought-after features while its stock trigger has been known to be on the heavy side.

The Lipsey’s Exclusive model chambered in .45 ACP now features a slide cutout ready to take on a variety of today’s most popular red dot optics. The low-profile integral backup sight is built into the plate along with a custom front sight. The pistol also underwent Langdon’s trigger pull enhancement package which boasts a Gray Guns short reset trigger system that allows a lighter, smoother trigger pull. These new additions by Langdon Tactical bring this legacy platform into the modern era and place it firmly into the must-have category for anyone looking for power, precision, and reliability.

Lipsey’s Jason Cloessner on bringing this concept to the firearms community. “Being a fan of the HK USP, I have always wanted to do an exclusive project on the platform. When I heard Langdon Tactical was starting to customize HK pistols, I knew we had an opportunity to turn a legendary pistol into something really special ”

Ernest Langdon on this new HK venture and first collaboration on a Lipsey’s Exclusive. “We are excited to partner with Lipsey’s to bring LTT’s Custom HK USP 45 to customers. The USP is a legendarily accurate and reliable .45 caliber pistol with a loyal fan base. When Lipsey’s and HK asked us if we would be willing to take a look at it to see if we could give it some love, we were honored. The Langdon Tactical Trigger Job paired with our low RDO cut makes this a custom, smooth shooter with the updated capability to mount a red dot optic.”

Lipsey’s Exclusive HK USP .45 ACP is now available through Lipsey’s dealer network.

Celebrating 70 years, Lipsey’s was formed initially as a wholesale hunting and fishing distributor in 1953 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Today, Lipsey’s is one of the country’s largest independently owned firearms distributors, offering a complete catalog of firearms, NFA items, and accessories. The “AIM HIGHER” company mantra focuses on innovative product distribution and dedication to family and community. Lipsey’s industry-leading exclusive firearms and relationship commitment provide unmatched value to federally licensed dealers and top manufacturers

DEVCOM Soldier Center Supports Development of Improved Liquid Cooling Garments

April 20th, 2023

NATICK, Mass. — The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center, or DEVCOM SC, is supporting the development of new liquid cooling garments for prolonged in-field use. The cooling garments, a component of the microclimate cooling system, will help protect Soldiers from overheating, a condition that can lead to diminished cognitive and physical performance, heat injury, and in extreme cases, death.

The new garments are an improvement over the existing microclimate cooling garment, or MCG, and the environmental control vest, or ECV.

“The newly developed thermally conductive flame-resistant cooling vest, liquid cooling garment, is significantly — nearly 30 percent — more efficient in extracting body heat than the currently fielded ECV, and the new garment is 15 percent lighter,” said Joe Salmeron, a project engineer at DEVCOM SC. “With a higher heat extraction rate, warfighters are likely to have reduced thermal burden. This could lead to carrying fewer batteries and allow more time for mission execution.”

The liquid cooling garment, or LCG, can be seamlessly integrated into any protective garment using a cooling vest, including the Joint Science and Technology Office for Chemical and Biological Defense of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency-funded S&T developing system, the Tactical All-Hazards Ensemble.

DEVCOM SC led the effort for the Phase II Enhancement of a Small Business Innovation Research agreement. Through the Small Business Innovation Research program, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the U.S. Army Acquisition Support Center Air Warrior group contracted the small business, Oceanit. Oceanit was tasked with developing a high-performance, lightweight LCG.

Through this effort, Oceanit has created a highly effective cooling vest by incorporating its proprietary tubing material, Thermocore®. The tubing material’s thermal conductivity matches that of the human body, enabling effective heat transfer between the body and the coolant in the tubing.

DEVCOM SC and the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, or USARIEM, worked jointly to provide testing support that played a key role in the product’s development. DEVCOM SC and USARIEM conducted thermal manikin testing and modeling simulations to measure physiological thermal burden.

Due to the garment’s improved compressive fit, the garment doesn’t add bulk or negatively impact mobility. The garment also features custom manifolds that allows for the inclusion of additional items such as shorts, pants, sleeves, and cap.

The new garment is part of DEVCOM SC’s larger commitment to improving Soldier protection and performance while increasing lethality.

“Knowing that the cooling garments can make a difference for the warfighter by reducing heat injuries is very rewarding,” said Pratibha Sinha, DEVCOM SC’s project lead for the microclimate cooling program.

Germany’s Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has awarded Projekt System & Management GmbH (PSM), a joint venture of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall, an order to retrofit a further 143 Puma infantry fighting vehicles. In doing so, the German government is exercising two options contained in the contract for retrofitting original Puma infantry fighting vehicles to the new S1 design status. This contract was signed in June 2021.

The order volume is in the region of €770 million. By 2029, the key capabilities of firepower and command and control of all 143 Puma systems will be brought up to date. Exercising these options assures that every Puma in the Bundeswehr inventory will conform to the uniform S1 design status. Among other things, the retrofit includes integration of high-resolution day- and night-capable camera systems, the MELLS multirole-capable lightweight guided missile system, and digital radio equipment.

GA-ASI Flies MQ-20 Avenger Autonomously Using LEO SATCOM Data Link

April 19th, 2023

SAN DIEGO – 11 April 2023 – On April 6, 2023, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) conducted live, tactical, air combat maneuvers using Artificial Intelligence (AI) pilots to control a company-owned MQ-20 Avenger® Unmanned Aircraft System. Collaborative maneuvers between human and AI pilots were conducted using GA-ASI’s Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC) collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) ecosystem over a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communication (SATCOM) provider’s IP-based Mission Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) datalink. The LEO SATCOM connection was also used to rapidly retrain and redeploy AI pilots while the aircraft was airborne, demonstrating GA-ASI’s ability to update AI pilots within minutes.

This marks the first deployment of a LEO SATCOM provider connections running on an operationally relevant unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) platform. The team used two L3Harris Technologies RASOR Multi-Functional Processors (MFPs) – one that housed the transceiver card and another that controlled the BLOS Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA). The test aircraft was outfitted with a Ball Aerospace BLOS AESA system, capable of full duplex operation. The demonstration highlighted GA-ASI’s commitment to operationalizing CCA by fusing innovative future warfare technologies, such as GA-ASI’s AI pilots and LVC ecosystem, and L3Harris and Ball Aerospace BLOS datalink solutions.

“The flight demonstrated GA-ASI’s unmatched ability to fly autonomy on real, tactically relevant, unmanned combat aerial vehicles,” said GA-ASI Senior Director of Advanced Programs Michael Atwood. “It displayed effective BLOS Command and Control through the collaboration between three defense primes. This showcases our rapidly maturing CCA mission system suite and moves us one step closer to providing this revolutionary capability to the warfighter.”

GA-ASI leveraged its end-to-end CCA ecosystem for the flight that fused third-party capabilities, human-on-the-loop control, and autonomy to enable effective human-machine teaming for 21st century conflicts. Operator commands were captured via hands on throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) controls and were sent via LEO SATCOM to AI pilots running Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms. AI pilots autonomously tracked and maneuvered around dynamically, and updated entities specified via HOTAS. Operators were provided updates from AI pilots on a cockpit heads-up display and could dynamically re-task via HOTAS as the mission evolved. In addition, data from agent performance was collected and sent to the ground where agents were retrained to improve performance, and then redeployed via LEO SATCOM in a matter of minutes.

This is another in an ongoing series of technology insertion and autonomous flights performed using internal research and development funding to prove out important concepts for UAS.
