USMC Inclement Weather Combat Shirt Features TenCate Fabrics

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

The new Inclement Weather Combat Shirt (IWCS) is a FR shirt designed to be worn in place of the FROG blouse during cold weather. Think of it as replacing the Desert Combat Jacket with increased capability. The Marines will purchase 180,000 IWCS from Short Bark Industries who are well known in the automotive world for their seat covers. Short Bark’s design incorporates several products from the TenCate Defenderâ„¢ M family. Most notably this is the first military adoption of a TenCate Defenderâ„¢ M laminate. The IWCS also includes a new stretch woven technology as well as two variations of knit fabrics. Nick Pence, Military Market Manager for TenCate Defense & Tactical explains: “The flame resistant IWCS was designed to provide increased protection from wind and rain while offering breathable water repellency for cold weather climates”.

I recently spoke with the team at TenCate about the challenge of color matching different printed fabrics on a single garment that the DCJ had to deal with and they told me that they are out in front of this issue and we shouldn’t see any of those types of shading issues.

Army Seeks Small Business MOLLE Manufacturers

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

While the Sources Sought Notice came and went, the fact remains that the Army is considering seeking small businesses to manufacture MOLLE. Yes, businesses as they anticipate multiple awards. They are looking at a three year Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract with one base year plus two option years. This means that the government will set minimums and maximums for a contract year and will place orders as they are needed and within those limits. Option years are awarded at the discretion of the government based upon need and performance.

For example, the government proposes a maximum base year consisting of production of 50,000 MOLLE Rifleman sets, 50,000 Tactical Assault Panels, 50,000 Medium Rucksacks, 50,000 Hydration Systems, 5000 Grenadier and SAW sets, 10,000 Pistol sets, and 2000 Medic Sets.

One issue that the Sources Sought puts to rest is whether we would see a new solicitation for the still under development Medium Rucksack which just recently finished phase I testing at Fort Knox. Medium Rucksack will become a component of MOLLE and produced under that contract. The Army hopes to begin fielding as early as July for use in Afghanistan.

The sources sought notice contains a great deal of info for those interested in MOLLE and is worth the read.

US PALM is One Big Tease

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

US Primary Armament Logistical Manufacturing is the new powerhouse behind bringing the AK 30 magazine to market. Why are they a tease? Because their new website won’t be up until the 2nd of April. As you saw in a recent report, they are delving into soft goods with the AK Attack Rack (AKAR). But apparently they’ve got even more tricks up their sleeve. They have teamed with Gabe Suarez to release the Defender, a new plate carrier with soft armor inserts. Designed to be simple yet functional, it also features three dedicated AK mag pouches on the chest with a MOLLE compatible rear panel and waist strap.

A note on the soft armor. Due to NIJ 06 standards, the inserts are ineligible for a rating as they do not have enough square inches of coverage to properly test. However, they are manufactured to stop a IIIa (.44 mag) threat.

If you love AKs then US PALM is for you. Be sure to visit www.uspalm.com on the 2nd of April for the full scoop.

M4 Shroud

Many of you have probably heard of the Bonehead Military Free Fall helmet but Bonehead Composites actually offers several products designed specifically for the military parachutist. Produced initially as a special project, their M4 shroud brings a whole new meaning to jumping with exposed weapons. Designed for MFF operations, the clam shell design features a padded interior to protect delicate optics and laser devices. It allows you to jump with the shroud attached to the weapon yet still have full access to the pistol grip and trigger. Special configurations as well as other weapons can be accommodated contact Bonehead Composites for details.

Patagonia Slingshot in Coyote

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The Slinghsot was a component of the Military Advanced Regulator System (MARS) military clothing system. A lightweight softshell, it has a bit of stretch built in. It is treated with a good DWR so light rain rolls right off. Two angled bicep pockets feature Velcro for insignia and the collar is lined with fleece. Finally, there are two deep pockets in the chest to warm hands or store essentials. Currently sizes Small – XX-Large are in stock. The torso is true to size with plenty of room for base layers but some may find the sleeves a bit short and also be aware that the cuff is elasticized. At $90 it is a smokin’ deal so these won’t be around for long at this price. Order at www.Patagonia.com.

Cobra Range Bag from Venom Industries

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

The new commercial tactical line, Venom by Bulldog Equipment, put up a few teaser pics today of their new range bag on Facebook and I am liking what I am seeing. Like my friend at Strike Hold! suggests, hopefully they will consider offering products in colors such as Grey, Taupe, and Blue in addition to what we would consider more traditional tactical colors. This will be a most welcome addition to the market place.
