Indian Army Introduces New Thermal Shelters

Friday, July 8th, 2011

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed thermally regulated shelters for Soldiers serving in the Himalayas.

According to a report in Rediff News:

these shelters are equipped with integrated temperature regulators, bio-digestors and air-monitoring systems. Modular in design, the shelter has all the facilities like electrical, plumbing, water supply and sewage disposal. Kerosene gensets and solar power are well integrated within the shelter. They have been designed to withstand seismic activities up to a level of zone 5, wind velocities up to 55 m/sec and sub zero temperatures up to minus 35 degree Celsius.”

Additionally, the tents are equipped with carbon dioxide detectors. They were developed to help Indian Soldiers deal with operating from 9000 to a staggering 20000 feet in the Eastern and Western Himalayas. Since the vast majority of Indian troops come from warm climes close to sea level, DRDO has also developed a “three-stage acclimatization” process to mitigate the effects of altitude sickness.

Check out the Rediff News article to learn about other DRDO initiatives for mountain warfare including the HAPO bag a portable hyperbaric bag.

Blackheart International has expanded their popular line of compact weapon handbooks with the introduction of AR15 and AK47 editions. They join previous editions on the HK416 and M16/M4 as well as the Glock. As with these previous versions the new handbooks feature a coil binding so that they can easily be flipped open to the proper page and contain tailored information required to operate, maintain, and conduct basic training with the firearm.

Canadian Forces – Improved Combat Uniform

Friday, July 8th, 2011

In the first redesign of the Combat Uniform since the 1950s, the transition to CADPAT now withstanding, the Canadian military is releasing the Improved Combat Uniform (fr. UNIFORME DE COMBAT AMÉLIORÉ (UCA)) beginning in 2012. This is not the introduction of a new uniform but rather an improvement of the existing issue item based on operational feedback.

The most striking change is that it becomes more ACU-like with 17 changes based on recent operational feedback. Production should commence in June 2012.

In particular, the ICU will incorporate these features:

•Mandarin Collar
•Flat Chest Pockets
•Pockets: Arms + pen pockets on sleeves
•Velcro attachment on sleeve cuffs
•No more draw strings
•Better fit
•Integrated kneepads (two models trialled: “green” and “grey”)

User acceptance trials and working group have already been completed with a design freeze anticipated for No Later Than 11 August. As this is planned as a rolling upgrade to the current pattern, fielding priorities will go to combat units and over time include the entire force.

There are two ironies at work here. The first is obviously that the uniform is becoming more ACU-like even as US Soldiers complain of the ACUs features. The second is that the uniform improvements won’t be fielded until Canadian combat troops have left Afghanistan.

One last thing I forgot to add. The CF Operational Clothing Team made it very clear that the uniform would remain in CADPAT and would NOT be MultiCam.

Nanuk Cases

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Nanuk Cases is a Canadian firm that is just beginning to gain a following here in the US. They produce waterproof cases for storage and shipping. While they have standard products, everything is customizable including colors and inserts.

One of the biggest advantages to Nanuk Cases is their one-handed Powerclaw Latching System. It is easy to use and the cases can be padlocked to secure your goods. Also, instead of the standard “Nanuk” in the space near the handle Nanuk can mold whatever you want (within size limitations).

One of the coolest features is the ability to attach a shoulder strap. In the buckle guards are mounting points for Nanuk’s proprietary Neoprene shoulder straps which feature Aircellâ„¢ comfort technology and won’t slip off your shoulder. What’s more, the straps are customizable.

The lid locks open thanks to the integrated lid stays so there’s no worry about breaking fragile items or getting hit on the hand or head with a falling lid. The cases are made in Canada and considered trade compliant. Additionally, they ship to US addresses from Nanuk’s facility in Michigan so your cases aren’t hung up in shipping.

While Nanuk’s current line up doesn’t include a rifle case, our friends at Stryke Logistical Group has assured us that one is in development.

With its mix of olive drab, coyote and khaki coloring, the G-Shock Military Play Set LE Watch looks very much like a tactical watch, and its ruggedness and large volume of features help to further this claim. Its powered by a CR2025 battery with an approximate life of 7 years. It can be programed to display up to four different cities’ times, from a list of 48 cities spanning 31 time zones, with city code display and full DST support. Additionally, this watch also features 5 independent alarms, a stopwatch that measures down to 1/100th of a second, a countdown timer that measures down to 1/10th of a second, and a full auto calender (pre-programmed until the year 2099).
