Exotac

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

We ran into Georgia-based Exotac at Blade Show where Tactical Fanboy shot this accompanying video. They are our kind of people. They manufacture a small line of quality outdoor and urban gear with each product produced in smaller quantity runs to allow them to constantly improve their offerings.

Their flagship product is the nanoSTRIKER, a collapsible ferrocerium fire-starter. Due to its small size, they had to develop a new striker which is constructed of two different grades of stainless steel (330 and 440C). Additionally, the replaceable ferrocerium rod works even when wet, for up to 1000 uses.

It’s available in Black, Gunmetal, OD Green, Blaze Orange, and Titanium (for a $48.00 upcharge).

Exotac will be at OR Summer Market in SLC this weekend in Booth #PV339.

Atom LT Pullover

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

In my opinion, the Arc’teryx Atom LT is their best value for performance and cost. It’s comfortable and stylish, but not flashy. It can be layered or worn as an outer garment, depending on conditions. And now, it’s available as a pullover. Insulated with Coreleft 60â„¢, the Atom LT Pullover also incorporates underarm stretch panels made from Polartec® Power Stretch® with Hardfleece® Technology. The softshell is wind resistant with a DWR coating. So long as you remain active it can work as an outergarment in all but downpours. The 1/2 zip front opening helps regulate your temperature.

Like all Arc’teryx garments, it features an articulated fit and is lightweight as well as compressible. The 1/2 zip only improves its packability. Unlike the standard Atom LT, the Pullover only has a single internal pocket. Available size Small – XXLarge in Black only.

c2r Adopts A-TACS

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

A-TACS has snagged their first British licensee and it’s c2r. You may recall we told you about their TacPad technology back in February. c2r has been around for a couple of years and they specialize in innovation. Once the mastered the technology to illuminate maps, charts and aides memoire, they turned their attention to armor carriers.

They developed the c2RMOR by adapting their plate carrier design to incorporate a load distribution system that transfers weight from the shoulders to the hips without compromising the ability of Soldiers to move naturally. The design is configurable via PALS for a variety of applications with additional lightweight cummerbunds available as well. It also features a built-in pouch for three magazines. To eject the inner plates, simply pull the two quick-release tabs on the front plate carrier. In addition to plates it also accepts level III soft armor backers. Finally, their design creates an air gap that allows cool air to circulate.

Development of the c2RMOR LITE followed the original C2RMOR platform as a cleaner, less cluttered design for use in low visibility applications. They kept the design flexibility concept, but left off the PALS webbing found on the the C2RMOR. Instead, the LITE offers a detachable magazine pouch on the front of the vest. Side pockets are integrated into the A-TACS printed elastic to allow for additional magazine storage. The back panel can be easily mated to their hydration pocket which is built around a source 2LPS water carrier.

In addition to a more widespread release c2r has decided to make their kit available in A-TACS.

Soldier Systems SBIRs

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

The Army’s latest round of Small Business Innovative Research topics includes several from Natick Soldier Systems Center and PEO Soldier.

Natick Soldier RD&E Center

A11-126 Energy Reducing, Ruggedized, Solar Lighting System

A11-127 First Generation of Controlled-Release Bacteriocins/Anti-Microbials

A11-128 Lightweight Material for Full-Scale Parachutes

A11-129 Methodologies and Algorithms for Ground Soldier Load and Route Selection Decision Applications

A11-130 High-Efficiency Energy-Harvesting Battery Charger/Storage Unit

PEO Soldier

A11-134 Nanostructured High Performance, High Angle of Incidence Anti-Reflection Coatings

A11-135 Thermally Responsive Fibers for Environmentally Adaptive Textiles

Officially, the SBIR program:

The goal of the dual-use SBIR program is to tap into the innovativeness and creativity of the small business community to help meet government R&D objectives. At the same time, these small companies develop technologies, products, and services which they can then commercialize through sales in the private sector or back to the government.

SBIRs are a great, low-cost way for the Army to rapidly investigate technology development in industry. Broken up into phases, success is awarded with funding for further development. Several years ago, SOCOM’s Modular Glove System was developed by Outdoor Research through a SBIR.

This year’s solicitation is in pre-release with the solicitation opening on 29 August, 2011 and closing 28 September, 2011. Visit www.acq.osd.mil/osbp/sbir/solicitations/sbir113/army113.htm for additional information as well as full submission instructions.

H2O Gear

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

All rumors aside, former Eagle Industries owner John Carver has some really cool stuff going on. Almost two years ago now, he teamed up with renowned Ski Guide Dean Cummings to create H2O Gear (H2OG). It was formed to develop, design, and test equipment for the most extreme conditions. Between John’s leadership at Eagle and Dean’s on the slopes, it sounds like a match made in heaven.

Their H2O Gear ATG (access the goods) ski line is handmade in the USA. Their custom designs include details from Dean’s years of experience, identifying light lumber to construct the skis. Their tapered sidewalls are heat fused to wood cores to protect the skis from edge damage while also keeping the ski durable, damp, and impact resistant. Additionally, their skis are fully protected by oversized, 4001 thick edges that wrap 360 degrees around the ski.

While all of the skis in the photo below sport some cool paint jobs, they also produce an all white ski designed specifically for military applications. This super damped “hybrid ski” is made from Ash and Aspen and features a reverse side cut which may seem counter intuitive to most but makes it easier to feather. This military model is a shorter ski and designed to traverse junk, or icy snow. It’s truly a working ski.

If you are going to be at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City this week, be sure to stop by and check them out in booth # PV365. Make sure to say “hi” to John and Dean.
