US Purchasing UK Harrier Fleet

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

According to a story in the UK Guardian, the US Department of the Navy is purchasing the entire fleet of 74 UK Harriers removed from service as part of their controversial Strategic Defence and Security Review.

The USMC plans on keeping the Harrier in service through 2025 so this is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of available aircraft. In an interview with Navy Times, Chief of the US Navy Supply Corps, Rear Admiral Mark Heinrich said, “We’re taking advantage of all the money the Brits have spent on them. It’s like we’re buying a car with maybe 15,000 miles on it. These are very good platforms. And we’ve already got trained pilots.”

This is a good use of resources.

Kifaru Releases MultiCam/Coyote Woobies

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Kifaru Tactical has just updated their excellent Woobie and Doobie. They are now offering both in a reversible, two-tone MultiCam/Coyote color combination. The Woobie was originally envisioned as a modern replacement for the USGI poncho liner. It combines RhinoSkin Shell with ClimaShield combat insulation. The Woobie uses 2 oz/square yard of insulation and the Doobie (Double Woobie) uses 4 oz/square yard of insulation.

Kifaru invested in the RhinoSkin Shell material so other products will also be offered in the new colors. For example, Slick Bags will also be available in either MultiCam or Coyote with OD interiors.

I got a Woobie several years ago when they were first released and it has weathered very well. Much better than the issue item. Granted, it costs more, but I have to remind of my old adage; “Buy Quality, Cry Once.” The issue poncho liner will never insulate like this thing.

BOLO Report – CMI Announcess LE Designated Marksman Program

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Center Mass Inc. (Patrol Rifle Competition, remember?) has announced they are developing and will be teaching a Law Enforcement Designated Marksman Certification Program. They describe it as a “natural progression for law enforcement patrol operations. The NPRC has taught us a very clear lesson over the years…And that lesson is, if you want to win, you need magnified optics. The writing is on the wall in our opinion, that many law enforcement professionals will soon be turning to magnified optics. To this end CMI has combined elements of our acclaimed law enforcement patrol rifle and sniper training programs to develop the Law Enforcement Designated Marksman Certification Program.”

CMI has led the way in patrol rifle training for a decade and a half, and authored the NTOA’s Patrol Rifle Training Manual. Their sniper training programs are endorsed by the American Sniper Association.

This class is a 2 day, 16 hour course designed to “enhance a patrol rifle operator’s ability to place accurate fire upon targets that are partially exposed or hostage takers encountered during patrol operations using magnified optics. This level of training is the next progression for law enforcement patrol rifle preparation…”

First, the Advance Combat Ensemble (ACE) used by the Canadian Air Force will be manufactured with Nomex FR fabric from TenCate’s Brigade product portfolio. Additionally, new tents will incorprate the Nomex-based TenCate Campshield FR liner fabric.
