Natick Developing New IFAK Pouch

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

At last week’s Military Mountain and Cold Weather Symposium I had an opportunity to check out several creations from Natick’s Load Carriage Prototype Lab. One of those items was a much needed facelift for the Individual First Aid Kit pouch which was rushed into service not long after Operation Iraqi Freedom began.

The current issue item is a modified SAW ammo pouch and it really isn’t well executed for what it needs to do. It’s kind of like attaching a brick to the armor vest. PM Soldier Clothing and Individual Equipment’s Rich Landry worked with the Army’s medical community to determine the latest and greatest contents list and then set about redesigning the pouch. One big change is that the Soldier is now issued two Combat Application Tourniquets so the new insert accommodates that.

The biggest change is the pouch’s basic shape. It is now a horizontal envelope-style with PALS webbing along its face and openings on either end to accept the insert. I was able to try the pouch out and it is easy to access the insert and restage. The insert is still attached to the pouch via an elastic coil bungee which can be detached via Velcro if needed. Both ends of the insert feature pull loops so it can be deployed left or right depending on the preference of the Soldier and mounting location. Additionally, its flat format allow it to be mounted on the lower back or under other pouches on either side of the cummerbund.

In a Natick press release, Landry commented, “We designed it literally about three or four months ago, the medical community said, ‘Awesome idea. Let’s move out with it.’ Overwhelmingly, they thought this was a huge improvement over the current IFAK.”

Unfortunately, I’m not sure when it will become a general issue item but recent testing at Ft Polk was very promising.

SOTech developed a similar pouch in 2010 based on the contents of the SOF IFAK. It completed testing and was released for sale late last year.

Kick Some Ass with a Rolled Up Magazine – Redux

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

We first published this article in March of 2010. It’s still classic. Then again, there’s the Craig Sawyer method.

If you are a fan of our WTF? series of articles then this one is for you. We think we have identified the mother of all WTF?’s and all future articles will be judged against this one. This is awesome!

Professor Ronald Duncan is providing instruction in the art of Hoda Korosu; the art of improvised weaponry. I was actually quite pleased to see this since I have been telling my kids since they were little that you could turn anything into a weapon. I don’t think they really ever believed me until now.

Ever get your ass kicked with a rolled up magazine? Well be careful with this information. It can be dangerous. Seriously, someone (yes it was one of those doubting Thomas children of mine) almost put my eye out earlier. If you do put your eye out, (or anything else) remember, we warned you.

Finally, I gotta say, seeing this guy I immediately think of Pootie Tang and the belt.

Viper Headwear was started by a US Army SF vet. Their new “Snake Eater” is a fitted cap for tactical operators constructed from genuine Crye Precision Multicam® 50/50 Nylon/Cotton Cordura® material. Caps can be ordered with or without the 2″ x 3.5″ Velcro® loop material on the front of the cap, 1.5″ x 1.5″ loop on top, and 1″ x 4″ or 1″ x 6″ Velcro® loop material on the back for shorter 4-inch or standard 6-inch nametapes.

For added comfort when wearing communications headsets, this cap does not include the button on top and it features an unstructured, lower crown.

Magnum USA Sponsors Team 5 Foundation

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Even though they just met at SHOT Show, it was love at first sight for Magnum USA and Team 5 Foundation. Magnum saw right away the good works being done by Team 5 and decided to sponsor their trip beginning this weekend, to bring modern medical services to a remote region of Guatemala. The goal is to provide as much medical care as possible to 12,000 Mayan villagers in a region of 35 villages. An ultrasound has been donated for the mission, and other team equipment, like boots, jackets, shirts and pants, have been donated by Magnum Boots USA.

Team 5 Foundation is a medical mission organization that brings western medicine and education to developing countries. It is comprised of US veterans, many of whom served overseas in Special Forces. They not only provide medical services, but have also designed a program to teach local healthcare workers emergency response in a remote area, as well as emergency childbirth.

“This Guatemala mission is focused on the high maternal death rate, which is approximately 29 deaths per 30 calendar days,” said Eric Linder, RMP, co-founder of Team 5 Foundation. “We are educating them in western style medicine, certifying them and giving them hands on experience in clinic. Our goal is to reduce the deaths, bring awareness and leave equipment in the villages.”

The team will be also provide future support for Guatemala twice a year to keep the standards in place, in addition to helping other underserved destinations around the globe.

“When we met Team 5 for the first time a few short weeks ago at SHOT Show 2012, we knew instantly that we wanted to help support their incredible efforts,” said Alexis Nascimento, Magnum USA’s public relations manager. “After many years of sacrifice and service to our country, it’s inspiring to see how dedicated this team is to selflessly helping others in this capacity. We wish Team 5 safe travels and a successful mission.”

It should be noted that several companies have manned up and are sponsoring this philanthropic pursuit. Hats off to all involved.

Massif Goes Haute Couture

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

This Fall, Massif is launching a new fashion clothing line. We’ve told you about their new non-FR, outdoor/tactical line but this is something altogether different. Once again, it’s non-FR but his time the approach is “Tailored clothing made from performance fabrics”. Consider it a lifestyle brand for today’s “urban warrior”.

It’s a great effort to diversify their offerings from very military centric FR combat clothing to outdoor/tactical and now high end urban wear. You can see that the new Massif Collection draws influence from what they know best and you will see some of the same fabric stories between the two new lines.
