Some Background on Roggenwolf’s NZ Camo Candidate

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

We received this account of Roggenwolf’s experience in vying for the New Zealand camouflage program.

In April 2011, Roggenwolf was advised that New Zealand Defence Force [NZDF] was looking to update its DPM Combat Uniform. Part of the plan was to implement a new camouflage pattern that could work across multiple operating environments, and I was asked if I would be interested in submitting a proposal. Naturally, I was.

The final submission was received by Yakka Apparel Solutions (NZ) on 19 May. Within a week, I was told that one my camouflage designs — RyewolfR2 — would continue to the next stage. Six metres of fabric were printed, and trial garments were cut and sewn.

Recognition testing was conducted around Waiouru, in a variety of terrains: jungle, forest, open country tussock, sandy and urban. The disruptive effect of RyewolfR2 was good enough that it passed another down-select. My submission had gone from being one among 12 contenders to being one among five.

However, the colourway was not ideal. Based on feedback and photos from Waiouru, I decided that Roggenwolf’s original “Timberwolf” colourway might be a better choice. A few variations were proposed; prints and fabric were sent; garments were made; and by the end of November 2011, RyewolfR2 was running neck-and-neck with only one other design: HyperStealth’s Multi-Terrain Camouflage [MTC].

Regular visitors to Soldier Systems Daily will already know that MTC ultimately won the race. They will also know that the final selection was based on aesthetic appeal; additional testing revealed only slight differences in camouflage effect.

So I don’t feel defeated. Instead, I feel validated. Since 2006, Roggenwolf has developed camouflage solutions utilising proprietary paradigms and techniques — and now I know that my ideas work.

As a result, I’m currently looking at producing Roggenwolf Warg5U on a commercial basis.

Warg has been chosen for a number of reasons. First, it’s more widely known than RyewolfR2. Second, it’s a little easier on the eye than RyewolfR2. Most important, though, is the fact that it was specifically designed to utilise the colourway that NZDF has determined works in jungle, woodland and urban settings.

Comparative Burn Test Video Dismounted FREE vs GEN III ECWCSADS

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

In this very powerful video demonstration ADS, Inc presents a burn comparison, in cooperation with DuPont and their Thermo-Man testing equipment, simulating the effects of fire exposure associated with an IED blast, demonstrating the effective differences between Dismounted FREE (Fire Resistant Environmental Ensemble) and the current issue GEN III ECWCS (non-FR) clothing systems.

RESULTS
While the Dismounted FREE garments self-extinguish within seconds, the older, non-FR GEN III ECWCS continues to burn. The results of which are clear within the burn data:

Dismounted FREE – 99% Survival Rate, 9% Total Burn* (2.5% 2nd degree, 6.6% 3rd degree)
GEN III ECWCS – 67% Survival Rate, 53% Total Burn* (23.8% 2nd degree, 29.5% 3rd degree)

*Unprotected Thermo-Man head accounts for 7% of Total Predicted Burn Injury.

TEST:
Scenario: 4-second exposure, 60-second acquisition
GEN III ECWCS (Current Issue Cold Weather Clothing System)
-Cotton Base Layer
-Level II
-Level V

Dismounted FREE
-Level I
-Level II
-Level V

I’ve written about Dismounted FREE before. I encourage you to check out my previous article explaining its makeup and that it is an FR environmental clothing system for ground troops.

Best of OR – Magnetic Velcro Fasteners

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

When I get asked about what I consider to be the biggest hit of last week’s Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, I have to say, it’s this; Magnetic Velcro Fasteners. Invariably, I find the simplest solutions to be the best so it’s amazing that no one has thought of this before.

Lots of Soldiers are unhappy with the hook and pile tape used as closures for their ACUs. They’d love to replace it with buttons. If you’re one of them, I know it’s hard to believe, but this simple device might just be the answer to your prayers.

When Fighter Design LLC came up with the idea of combining Velcro brand fasteners and magnets, Velcro USA welcomed the idea. Here you can see how Magnetic Velcro Fasteners would look on your ACUs.

And here is a demo of how it works.

Pretty cool huh? Coming soon.

Multimedia & eReader cases from IA

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Intelligent Armour released a very nice MultiCam Kindle case a few weeks ago. Based on its success, they’ve added a few new options to their range of multimedia cases to include iPad, Nook, Kobo and Samsung eReaders and other tablets.

Intelligent Armour manufactures all of these cases in the UK, UK using Crye Multicam 2-way stretch from Duro Industries. The larger cases employ Potomac Field Gear’s Advance Protective Fabric; this is to protect the device/tablet screen from getting scratched. The fabric is also fire retardant, wicking and anti-static.

Gizmodo Falls for Duffel Blog Story

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Holy Schnookies! Gizmodo was actually the website that inspired me to create SSD as a daily blog. However, as good as they are, that doesn’t mean that mistakes don’t happen. And earlier today, they happened. One of their reporters was taken in by “Duffel Blog” a blog similar to “The Onion” but targeted at the military. Apparently, Gizmodo actually believed that the US Army was trading in their bayonets for tomahawks. Good Grief Charlie Brown. This is why I pull my hair out every time the MSM ‘discovers’ a military story. Better luck next time guys.
