Unfortunate But Understandable News from Mayflower Regarding Baby Carriers

Monday, August 6th, 2012

The Mayflower Baby Carrier design concept took the industry by storm just a month ago but unfortunately, real concerns over our overly litigious society shut the project down. Here is a statement from Mayflower regarding their decision.

Tactical Baby Carriers:

Due to very ambiguous US regulations governing anything to do with children and the high occurrence of frivolous law suits we have decided it’s not in out best interest to offer these for sale. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

OTTE Gear Releases Overwatch Anorak

Monday, August 6th, 2012

OTTE Gear has released the Overwatch Anorak that we showed you during SHOT Show 2011. Manufactured from Schoeller NanoSphere, the oversized anorak cut fits over your equipment.

We think OTTE Gear did a great job defining the product –

Designed to augment the traditional ghille, the Overwatch allows the marksman to keep his kit concealed when the environment requires both discretion and weather protection.

They’ve refined the design a little bit and it’s now available.
1. Packs down and takes little room in a rucksack
2. Oversized hood accommodates helmet
3. Loop on sleeve for I.D.
4. Elastic webbing on hood, shoulders and upper back for garnishing
5. Forearm zip pocket holds a removable 4” x 6” plastic dope card sleeve
6. Thumb loop so jacket sleeve won’t ride up
7. Cuffs have laminated die-cut hook/loop adjustments
8. Large sleeve pocket
9. Kangaroo pass-through pocket to access mags and gear
10. Anorak can be unzipped from hem to elbow on one or both sides for quick dress/removal

Available in MultiCam sizes Small – XXLarge.

Introducing Sand Storm

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Sand Storm Boots is the brainchild of Dan Ellis and Military Product Solutions (MPS). You may not know Dan, but you probably know his boots.

Known to many as “boot maker to the good guys” Dan is responsible for a wide variety of the very boots many of us have in our closets. After a stint as a Product Engineer at Adidas and the Director of Product Development at Reebok, Dan put together a line of specialty boots for an Army SOF unit with the Italian mountaineering boot company Aku (pronounced ah-koo). Soon after, BlackHawk came out with their first line of boots, all designed and engineered by Dan and his team. I was one of the original testers of the BlackHawk boots back in my USAF days.

Most of you are familiar with the OTB boot brand, founded by Dan Ellis. The brand came about from a suite of water specific boots developed for the Navy SEALs.

The Sand Storm brand was put together with the premise of making a high quality yet good value product. As you know, most Military and Law Enforcement folks don’t have a ton of cash to spend on boots. And that’s what inspired San Storm, to develop a line of products that are both high in quality and price competitive.

Sand Storm has partnered with US Cavalry for its initial launch where you can find competitive prices on the Sand Storm boot range.

3 boots make up the launch, the Light Fighter – an extreme lightweight yet durable boot, The HooDoo – a great all around military boot with phenomenal breathability, and the Stinger Composite Toe, a lighter than expected ASTM certified composite safety toe boot.

All of the boots in the Sand Storm line are fast rope ready, including the Light Fighter.

Additionally, all sole units are double cemented as well as stitched to the upper meaning your soles will not delaminate even in the warmest and harshest environments.

Remember The Fallen

Monday, August 6th, 2012

6 August is a tough day in our hometown. We lost a lot of brothers on that day. But those men were from a lot of hometowns and they weren’t just brothers. They were also fathers, sons, and friends. Their loss was felt by many. But I think it’s selfish to hold their loss above any other. Everyday this nation and our allies suffers the loss of our sons and daughters, our brothers and sisters. The war has taken many away from us. So on this day, I ask you to not just consider the men we lost on 6 August 2011, but also the many the we lose any given day, in the line of duty.

Magpul Products Sneak Peek

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Magpul is a sponsor of the Hot Shots calendar and during the photo shoot, SSD was able to check out some of their latest wares.

MOE Stock

The new MOE fixed stock for AR-style rifles unveiled at SHOT Show will be hitting the market very soon. QD cups are coming that will accommodate the MS3 mount and be offered separately in order to keep cost down and because not everyone needs them. There are holes in both the front and rear of the stock to accommodate the QD cups offering lot of versatility to the shooter.

It offers slightly larger storage compartment dimensions than the issue A2 stock. Additionally, it uses the PRS buttpad. In fact, it will be compatible with all PRS accessories in the future.

SGA 870 Stock Upgrades

Look for an MSA style loop adapter that inserts between the SGA stock and receiver. It will fit in the slot seen below. Coming soon.

M3 Magazine

One magazine to rule them all. Seriously. Magpul has invested 3 years in improving their magazine. To me, it’s as if Magpul crossbred the PMAG and EMAG to produce a single magazine that is compatible with the gamut of weapons featuring NATO Std magwells (SA80, HK416, etc) as well as AR Mil Spec weapons. But, it’s not just about new materials. They’ve also improved their molding processes as well as a few design features. By extension, this means they have had to improve their test fixtures to record improved performance. It’s gotten that much better.

20120805-201615.jpg

Notice the slightly raised portion above and below the mag catch slot. It is an improvement that improves the strength and life of the magazine.

20120805-191206.jpg

Here you can see the new floor plate design that slides on from the rear. The slim line option shown at SHOT has been abandoned. However, they do plan on releasing a Ranger Plate. Additionally, the dot matrix to aid in magazine marking is visible. You may also notice the bulges along the front of the mag in order to improve grip.

20120805-191310.jpg

The body of the mag is also a bit different than its predecessors. For example, you can see a slight bulge on the spine about where the magazine bottoms out in the magwell. It’s called an over insertion stop. This is to keep the shooter from over inserting the magazine either during (re)loading or immediate action. Unfortunately, with this feature it looks like that new Kydex I got a few weeks ago from HTC will have to be replaced once these are available. But, the new features are worth it.

20120805-191405.jpg

Additionally, you may notice the new, more pronounced cut out along the top rear of the mag. This is to more adequately accommodate the bolt hold open devices in some non-Stoner style weapons like the SCAR and ACR. With those weapons the bottom of the carrier could drag across the top of the mag. In fact, both the spine and feed lips performance has improved several fold.

20120805-200810.jpg

Magpul has also improved the follower. While it won’t look like previous Magpul anti-tilt followers due to its asymmetric shape, they have also improved the channel that it rides along inside the magazine body.

Finally, this doesn’t mean that the PMAG, or for that matter, the EMAG will go away. Magpul will continue to support their contracts for those magazines as well as support those that prefer the slick sided EMAG. If there is one takeaway, it is that M3 (Material, mold flow, mold processing) denotes a technology that will be carried over into all future magazine designs. In addition to a proprietary magazine for an LWRC 6.8 rifle, Magpul assures us that that will be an additional new Magpul M3 technology magazine coming after this model.

Winkler Knives II – Jungle Knife

Monday, August 6th, 2012

The WK II Jungle Knife takes its inspiration from a traditional Borneo design. Developed at the request of a SOF customer, the Knife’s hidden tang reduces overall weight and enhances forward balance for increased chopping power. The rear handle swell with a downward sweep provides secure indexed grip. Made of 5160 steel, the blade measures 12″ from the front of the steel ferrule, with a 7 1/4″ cutting edge. Overall length is 17 1/2″. The Jungle Knife comes with a Kydex sheath (not pictured) that features a pocket for the included rubber mounted DMT diamond sharpener.
